April 28, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0022hrs TMF Fire Mission at 0020hrs String 295 Target B, has 4 to 5 personnel is moving West to East at 3 miles per hour with negative confirmation, negative clearance code 1. At 0137hrs Saber 49 is on station for NH Box 62, found tin roofed shelter at grid 796514, engaged and destroyed hootch, broke station at 0205hrs. At 0145hrs TMF Fire Mission 0145hrs Sting 295 Target B has 2 to 3 personnel moving East, negative metal confirmation and negative clearance, code 1. At 0340hrs MACV MO Duc reports Nui Ong Do under mortar attack receiving small arms fire and also followed by ground attack predominately from the north but some from all directions, requested gun ship. Chase Dolphin 21 will pick up back sear (82), Saber 49 is on station 0415rhs broke station at 0505hrs. At 0600hrs MACV called for Urgent Dust Off for 6 litter, 1 RF, 5 PF, with mortar and small arms fire wounds and Dust Off was completed at 0620hrs. Total 8 PF and 2 PSDF were Dust Off, all Urgent vicinity BS768531. At 0620hrs RF 103 MACV MO Duc called informing us RF 103 is in contact with VC Platoon size element, enemy in and has automatic weapons and B 40, RF 103 is receiving fire from the northwest, push 6685, call sign J-62. No US on ground, requested guns, at 0700hrs we asked that Gun Ships request to be cancelled vicinity BS750458. At 0830hrs 1-20 Infantry LZ Liz Access Road is now open. At 0830hrs 1-20 Infantry Primo 3 is on station at this time. At 0930hrs To Brigade S-3 From 1-20 Infantry S-3: 1. Request action to be taken through Nghia Hanh District to remove Vietnamese civilians in isolated location vicinity BS654574 and BS661564. 2. TMF sensor Strings 295, 296, 292 and 311 have shown continuous activation’s along historical and proven VC/NVA route to and from AN BA (BS6858) to Ban Thoi (BS6154). Current populated areas overlay shows isolated inhabited area along infiltration route prohibiting engagement of VC/NVA movement along this route under current rules of engagement. 3. Recommend requested action be taken soonest. At 0950hrs Helix 35 spotted 10 51caliber pits grid BS7141, also trenches in area calling Warlord 7 into the area to check. At 10007hrs 1-20 Infantry Primo 3 broke station. At 1230hrs MACV Mo Duc at BS739663, requested Urgent Dust Off for 3 US and 2 Vietnamese personnel. They got a call stating that a vehicle had hit a mine Quebec 82 and 59 were picked up by Dust Off and went to the scene of incident Major Gregg said that Vietnamese personnel said it was a command detonated, also it was a large plastic explosive. Crater was 6’ in diameter and 3’ deep with results were 2 US WIA, 1 Vietnamese WIA, 1 US KIA and 1 Vietnamese KIA and personnel were from Quang Ngai and Da Nang, 1 of the wounded was a US Civilian. At 1305hrs 1-20 Infantry Hornet 24 is on station at this time for resupply and broke station at 1646hrs. At 1655hrs Charlie Company LZ Liz Access Road, urgent Dust Off interpreter blew his fingers off while cleaning his weapon (3 fingers), Dust Off completed at 1700hrs. At 1700hrs Helix 32 is on station at this time and breaking station at 1730hrs with negative findings. At 1820hrs From Brigade S3 to 1-20 Infantry S-3, Effective with plans submitted no later then DATE/TIME 291100, all Companies will work in a Company Area of Operation, the unit will be limited to operation in the Box. The unit will only leave the Box with approval of an Area of Operation extension by Brigade Headquarters. Plans will indicate time frame for operations in each Company Box. At 2041hrs To Alpha Company Commanding Officer from S-3 Area of Operation boundary effective immediately: BS6455, BS6755, BS7053, BS7050, BS6450, and BS6455 Acknowledge. At 2042hrs 1-20 Infantry to Command Officers for Alpha, Bravo and Delta Companies from S-3 change to policy requires all units to conduct tactical operations exclusively in designated area of operation. Any changes or operating out of designated Area of Operation requires Brigade approval, effective immediately Acknowledge. At 2058hrs CPT Ross inspection of Liz Bunker line, 6, 7 and 8 did not known the password, bunker 9 had nobody in it. Everything else seemed to be all right, trip flares and claymores were out etc. At 2150hrs Saber 44 is on station for Box 62, at grid BS788550, spotted 3 to 5 sampans which looked suspicious, engaged area and destroyed 1 sampan and 1 tripod in a clump of trees, broke station at 2215hrs for Bronco. At 2220hrs 1-20 Infantry Area of Operation extension for 4-21 Infantry grids Upper Left BS6840 Lower Right BS7237 extended to 012400 May 1971, designator B 14. Area of Operation extension approved for 1-20 Infantry from 4-21 Infantry grids BS7237 to start, designator B 22, DATE/TIME group 290600 April 1971 to 012400 May 1971. Legend: 1st Platoon 51, 2nd Platoon 26, 3rd Platoon 13, 4th Platoon 17, CO-66.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
April 28, 1971

At 0807hrs Alpha Company all element in their Patrol Bases Command Post and 2nd and 4th Platoons at BS686534 with 1st Platoon at BS663508 and 3rd Platoon is at BS675545. At 0935hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon Daylight Ambush in location at BS677545. At 1016hrs Alpha Company 1 coke Kid VIP 1 US hand frag at 3rd Platoon Patrol Base, Kid 8 years old, gave him 3 cans of C Rations. At 0830hrs Command Post, 2nd and 4th Platoon Patrol Base bought 1 60mm mortar round, negative Lot #, 2 boxes C Rations, all blown in place. At 1018hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon Patrol at BS671555 found 1 sleeping position for 3 to 4 personnel, size 4’ X 8’, not recently used, overhead cover destroyed. At 1033hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon patrol at BS671558 found a trench line 6’ wide, 30’ long and 6 to 8’ deep 2’ water negative recent use. At 1142hrs Alpha Company received .50 cal small arms fire and mortar and small arms pinning them down. 1 US with small scratch from shrapnel, pulling element back to Patrol Base, check with OP Woodstock but they did not have a 50 cal. At 1627hrs Alpha Company reports 1 40mm duster round was brought to the Command Post at Patrol Base at BS686534 by 2 Vietnamese males approximately 8 to 11 years old, the Command Post gave them 2 boxes of C rations. At 1654hrs while on patrol received approximately 15 rounds of small arms fire from the south at proximity of 300hrs and saw 2 personnel with packs and weapons and dressed in green. Alpha had a M-16 and 1 has a AK 47 and called in Artillery Fire Mission on 2 personnel with packs and weapons, with negative results. At 2012hrs Alpha Company all element in their Night Defense Position Command Post 2nd and 4th Platoons at BS687535, 2nd Platoon ambush at BS678530 with 1st Platoon at BS673516 and 3rd Platoon at BS672549.

 

Bravo Company
April 28, 1971

At 0742hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon Ambush while going to pick up mechanical ambush at grid BS730426, heard and observed 2-3 VC/NVA in the bushes. They engaged with small arms fire, and the enemy evaded to the southeast, element searched the area with negative finding and returned to their Patrol Base. At 0823hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon and 4th Platoon in Patrol Base at BS718437 and 3rd Platoon in Patrol base at BS724427. At 0849hrs Bravo Company at 0754hrs 1st Platoon had a Mechanical Ambush go off vicinity BS718436 and 1st Platoon patrol checking out location and had negative findings. At 0926hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon is moving out to check explosions 3 to 400 meters to West of Patrol base and at 0940hrs reports negative findings. At 1210hrs Bravo Company all morning patrols have closed and 1st Platoon closed on BS717453. At 1647hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon patrol at BS725428 detained 3 Vietnamese males age 9-14, the detainees were found with hand frag and M-79 rounds. At 1953hrs Bravo Company Command Post and 1st Platoon in Night Defense Position at BS728446, 2nd platoon and 4th Platoon is moving out to Night Defense Position at BS720438. At 2030hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon ambush at BS722439, Command Post and 1st Platoon at BS728446, 2nd and 4th Platoon at BS720438, and 3rd Platoon at BS725428, Bravo Company has 7 Mechanical Ambushes out tonight.

 

Charlie Company
April 28, 1971

Charlie Company has the Security Mission for LZ Liz and Road Security. At 1655hrs Charlie Company LZ Liz Access Road, urgent Dust Off interpreter blew his fingers off while cleaning his weapon (3 fingers), Dust Off completed at 1700hrs. At 2005hrs Charlie Company the end bunker on Access Road getting 3 to 5 rounds of sniper fire from south proximity, returned small arms fire, 81mm Illumination fired, negative results. SP4 Ronnie N. Williams was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital (11C20).

 

Delta Company
April 28, 1971

At 0610hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon at 1745hrs last night on individual line #5616 received minor shrapnel wounds from blasting cap, while setting out mechanical ambush, Dust Off requested completed at 0644hrs. At 0705hrs Delta Company Command Post, 1st and 4th Platoons are moving to BS721494. At 0709hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon is moving to Patrol base 724476. At 0846hrs Delta Company 3rd Platoon is moving to BS704506. At 0845hrs Delta Company reports changes 3rd Platoon Patrol Base is at BS704506, 3rd Platoon U patrol 0900hrs BS705511, BS707517, 3rd Platoon E patrol 1300hrs BS701497 and BS706500. At 0930hrs Delta Company 3rd platoon found a skeleton in blue uniform believed to be NVA. Grave was half dug up when found BS703505. At 1206hrs Delta Company all patrols have closed, 2ndPlatoon patrol is at BS717474, 1st Platoon Patrol is at BS719496 and 3rd Platoon patrol is at BS706500. At 2011hrs Delta Command Post 1st and 4th platoons at BS726497, 2nd platoon moved their ambush to BS726475, 3rd platoon at BS705510.

 

Echo Company
April 28, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 1207hrs Recon Platoon is back on LZ Liz.
