Headquarters and Headquarter Company
May 26, 1968

Forward Area 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Ross for Operation WHEELER-WALLOWA and are OPCON to the 196th Light Infantry Brigade. At 0837hrs 1-20 Infantry reports Charlie Company 30 road sweep to LZ Baldy at Check Point G. At 1137hrs 1-20 Infantry reports road is clear. At 1258hrs Convoy from Division reached this location LZ Baldy and preparing to move to LZ Ross. At 1314hrs 1-20 Infantry reports units in position Alpha Charlie and Echo Company executing artillery preparation, they have not received any fire or sightings. At 1324hrs Convoy departed for LZ Ross at 1320hrs, 20 Vehicles coming to LZ Ross just past check point D and at 1415hrs 1-20 Infantry reports 1 Vehicle in the convoy hit a mine 50 meters past check point E, the driver was evac. At 1535hrs Alpha Company receiving automatic weapons fire at AT988296, AT994292 and AT968295, artillery being called fire being returned have received no casualties. At 1550hrs Convoy has now started to move again to LZ Ross and arrived at LZ Ross at 1610hrs. At 1740hrs Convoy departed LZ Ross and closed on LZ Baldy at 1815hrs.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
May 26, 1968

Alpha Company is conducting a Search and Clear Mission in the Area of Operation to sweep to AT9829. At 1314hrs 1-20 Infantry reports units in position Alpha, Charlie and Echo Companies executing artillery preparations and they have not received any fire and not sighting. At 1535hrs Alpha Company reports receiving automatic weapons fire from vicinity of AT988296, AT994292 and AT988295. Artillery being called and fire is being returned results 1 WHA (M). Alpha Company reports their Night Defense Position at AT991306. SGT Bobby G. Bibbs was evac.

 

Bravo Company
May 26, 1968

Bravo Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Ryder and will be conducting local Security Patrols in their Area of Operation along with local OP. SP4 James H. Hickman and PFC Juan J. Martinez where attached to the 2nd Surgical Hospital sick at 1400hrs.

 

Charlie Company
May 26, 1968

Charlie Company has the Security Mission for LZ Ross with responsibility for keep Road open. At 0708hrs 1-20 Infantry reports the Security and Road clearing team has departed. At 0837hrs 1-20 Infantry reports Charlie Company 30 road sweep to LZ Baldy at Check Point G. At 1137hrs 1-20 Infantry reports road is clear. At 1258hrs Convoy from Division reached this location LZ Baldy and preparing to move to LZ Ross. At 1324hrs Convoy departed for LZ Ross at 1320hrs, 20 Vehicles coming to LZ Ross just past check point D. At 1415hrs 1-20 Infantry reports 1 Vehicle in the convoy hit a mine 50 meters past check point E, the driver was evac. At 1550hrs Convoy has now started to move again to LZ Ross and arrived at LZ Ross at 1610hrs. At 1740hrs Convoy departed LZ Ross and closed on LZ Baldy at 1815hrs.

 

Delta Company
May 26, 1968

Delta Company continued to Search and Clear operation in the Area of Operation. At 0653hrs Delta Company reports they are moving on their sweeping west to AT9937 to AT996395 to AT995365. Delta Company reports their Night Defense Position at AT995365. LUKE ANDREW SMITH JR. is listed as KIA from other explosive device, fragmentation wounded and died from wounds in Duc Pho Area of Operations.

 

Echo Company
May 26, 1968

Echo Company is located at LZ Ross where Battalion Forward, is located and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and the Base Defense on LZ Ross. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Ross where they continue to provide direct fire support for the Battalion. 1-20 Infantry Recon Platoon manned OP Tiger, Cobra and Dragon. At 1211hrs Recon at BT046392 received heavy automatic weapons fire and engaged with 81mm firing stopped with no casualties or damage.
