Headquarters and Headquarter Company
March 26, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0345hrs 1-20 Infantry reports Radar at 2120hrs sighted 4 to 5 stationary personnel at BS808454 and engaged with 24 HE of Artillery 105 and at 2210hrs 5 to 6 stationary personnel at BS783481 with negative clearance informed the ARVN. At 2330hrs sighted 1 to 5 stationary personnel where sighted at BS779473 and engaged with 12 HE of Artillery 105 and at 2330hrs 3 to 5 stationary personnel were sighted at BS778482 and engaged with 12 HE Artillery 105. At 0400hrs 20 to 25 stationary personnel were sighted at BS778482 and engaged with 24 HE of Artillery 155. At 0435hrs Radar reports 3 to 5 stationary personnel were sighted at BS777435 informed Charlie Company and at 0510hrs 10 to 15 personnel were sighted moving west at BS829431 and engaged with 30 Fire Crackers of Artillery 105. At 0935hrs Brigade Commander arrived at LZ Liz and left at 0945hrs. At 1015hrs Brigade from Command General Americal Division: Subject Daily intelligence briefing be warned that sabotage attempts employing children to place delayed action grenades into gas tanks of vehicles stopping along Highway 1 may be attempted. For example, 19 March 1970 a 2 ½ ton truck was stopped at Can Do Bridge at BS9970 during which time an explosion is a soft drink was put into the gas tank of the truck and later causing injury to 2 US. It is important that every vehicle operator be alert to this treat and the driver lock or guard their gas tanks and vehicles from children or passers by. At 1820hrs Brigade we will have one ship from 1300hrs to 1800hrs due to the Combat Assault of ARVN. At 2005hrs Recon reports the 32 element is at BS819465 and the 34 element is at BS819461.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
March 26, 1970

At 0835hrs Alpha Company the 62 element took sniper fire at grid BS740322. There were approximately 5 VC and 5 weapons, one automatic. We had negative casualties and negative finding when artillery was called in. At 1015hrs Alpha Company 12 found a place where 20 to 30 people spend 1 to 2 days and there are old campfires. At 1025hrs Alpha Company 62 element found a tunnel entrance where they believe the sniper came from. At 1250hrs Alpha Company 12 found two old hootches at BS746334 and we fund fresh tracks in the area, which indicated that several people had spent the night here and left this morning the movement was to the west. At 1330hrs Alpha Company 62 at BS746324 found and destroyed one hootch and one bunker with negative further findings. At 1925hrs Alpha Company we have 1 US with back injuries will need an Urgent Dust Off and can not move complete at 1940hrs grid BS750330. At 2030hrs Alpha Company we are moving in to our Night Defense Position at BS748328.

 

Bravo Company
March 26, 1970

At 0658hrs Bravo Company 64 element pick up picked up 3 detainees at BS768448, 2 males 25 to 30years and one female about 22 sent to MACV. At 0840hrs the 33 element picked up on AWOL ARVN captured while working in the fields, he will be turned into Vietnamese Authorities. At 1300hrs Bravo Company PF from the North Bridge he shot himself in the hand BS771461 completed at 1310hrs. At 1605hrs Bravo Company 16 element has 2 female detainee one 41 and 45 sending to MACV. Bravo Company 169 PF platoon sprung their ambush on 3 VC/NVA at BS785420. The results were one M-1 Carbine CIA OD shirts and 2 purple shorts CIA and evidence of WIA was drag off. The VC where carrying 2 M-1 carbine and one M-16. The 37 and 35 elements are now checking the area.

 

Charlie Company
March 26, 1970

Charlie Company has the Security Mission for LZ Liz and at 0622hrs the 66 element is checking out the area of contact last night at BS749469. At 0835hrs Charlie Company 3 PF hit a booby trap at BS788470. It was a hand grenade hooked to a trip wire. They had shrapnel to the back, legs and arms; the Dust Off was made by the Command and Control helicopter at 0850hrs. At 0830hrs Charlie Company the mine sweep is completed and we request a truck to pick up the Charlie Company 66 element.

 

Delta Company
March 26, 1970

At 0622hrs Delta Company is moving to their the Day Logger BS757398, at 0835hrs Delta Company 32 need a priority Dust Off for a Vietnamese child who hit a booby trap, baby had 31-14 head injuries no further info was available, completed at 0858hrs. At 1155hrs Delta Company 12 picked up one female Vietnamese detainee at BS745410, approximately 40 years old and wearing black pajamas with no ID. At 1850hrs Delta Company all elements closed on BS735413. At 1605hrs Delta Company reports moving at 1625hrs Delta Company 62 element is moving to BS734390, the 63 element is moving to BS740405, the 64 element is moving to BS760395, the 12 to BS750400 and the 13 element is moving to BS43406 and 14 moving to BS745400.

 

Echo Company
March 26, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0616hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Scheduled Fires 8 and Observed Missions 1 with a total expended of 16 He and 24 Illumination. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. At 0645hrs Recon Platoon reports we are moving off LZ Liz. At 0802hrs Recon Platoon and E Troop are in location at BS808446. At 0937hrs E Troop and Recon destroyed 6 4X4 family bunkers at BS809458, we found one hot campfire. We are now sweeping south from BS821458. At 1000hrs E Troop is at BS842421 and from here will sweep north along the river. E Troop reports that their Night Defense Position will be at BS828448. At 1210hrs E Troop 1 Cav at BS805418 found 1 M-79evac to LZ Liz E Troop blew a 250 pound bomb at BS823427. At 1500hrs E Troop found a US claymore mine set up as deceptive device at BS809445 and had no C4, and our present location at BS809445. At 1634hrs E Troop has one VC KIA and 1 VC CIA at BS807446. The CIA was dressed in gray and black age 19. We have 1 AK47 and one US .45 CIA along with one hand frag grenade, 2 US pistol belts and 4 ARVN batteries. These 2 VC were spotted evading into a bunker and a hand frag grenade was tossed into the bunker and the rear was found in the bunker at grid BS807446.
