Headquarters and Headquarter Company
January 26, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. From DTOC to BTOC CPT Mac Leod effective 27 January 1971 there will be a 60% cut in Aviation assets made all efforts to insure maximum efficient use of Army Aviation assets. At 1300hrs LT Prisoc Scout Dog Platoon Leader called 1-20 Infantry and stated that mine dog handler was not ready for Aircraft when came for pick up at 1300hrs. Dog handler was absent without permission, 1-20 Infantry indicated that they would try to pick up dog at 1430hrs. At 1440hrs the 178th AHC while flying re supply for 1-20 Infantry CH-47 received 2 to 3 rounds of small arms fire at BS753568 with negative hits at altitude 100’ at speed 50 knots. At 1720hrs Warlord is inbound to pick up reaction to TFM report. At 1837hrs SGT Grim 1-20 Infantry reports to Brigade Spot Report at DATE/TIME 161830 while on Defense Patrol vicinity BS693577 tripped an unknown booby trap relieved to be a command detonated because of claymore wire found in the area. They later received 4 to 5 rounds small arms fire proximity 200 meters from the east and did not return fire because of Tet Truce. Brigade TOC called to remind Battalion that they can return fire if the need arises. At MACV MO Duc at DATE/TIME 262145 A 937 RF Company ambush at grid BS741639 RF engaged 3 VC with 1 VC KIA and 1 M-16 CIA with negative RF casualties this KIA was not confirmed by US. At 2215hrs Mo Duc Senior Advisor reports that a village on Highway 1 was under attack at BS767474.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
January 26, 1971

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission on LZ Liz along with Road Security vicinity S760435 to BS776435.

 

Bravo Company
January 26, 1971

Bravo Company at 0845hrs while on patrol found a Booby Trap and was a 81mm round with trip wire and a smoke grenade fuse and blew it in place. The Bravo Company Platoon patrol proceed on, and received 3 rounds of M-16 and 1 M-79 round from the southeast at approximately 150 meters at grid BS687570. Bravo Company then spotted 1 Vietnamese evading to the south into hootch followed to hootch and detainee same, 1 female age 15, no ID, dressed in white and black and will evac to Mo Duc. At 1330hrs Bravo Company hit a Booby Trap, a hand frag grenade with trip wire located in hedgerow not on trail, results 1 US wounds to legs Urgent Dust Off for LZ Bronco. At 1730hrs Bravo Company at 1700hrs engaged with small arms fire check out are and found 1 US Flag, 1 picture of Ho Chi Minh, Documents and 1 checkbook Vietnamese. Also found 1 M-16 ammo can with medical supplies and 3 small packs of rice, 1 pair of black PJ, 1 poncho, 1 towel, 2 38 rounds, 26 M16 rounds and Blood trails. Bravo Company reports their Night Defense Position at BS676583 with multiple ambushes. PFC Steven E Rife was evac at 1330hrs to 91st Evac with multiple frag wounds to both legs and Right arm and back from booby trap. PFC William Sherwood was evac to the 91st Evac Hospital sick.

 

Charlie Company
January 26, 1971

Charlie Company continued to work with multiple ambushes and multiple patrols in their Area of Operation and Charlie Company working with RF units with joint operations and working on OP at BS699562, BS693538 and BS638572. Charlie Company set up their Night Defense Position at BS699562 and BS689533. At 1837hrs SGT Grim 1-20 Infantry reports to Brigade Spot Report at DATE/TIME 161830 while on Defense Patrol vicinity BS693577 tripped an unknown booby trap relieved to be a command detonated because of claymore wire found in the area. They later received 4 to 5 rounds small arms fire proximity 200 meters from the east they did not return fire because of Tet Truce.

 

Delta Company
January 26, 1971

Delta Company continued to conduct ambush and patrolling in the Area of Operations. Delta Company 1st Platoon also with RF 172 build a OP vicinity BS753568. At 1600hrs Delta Company 1st and 2nd and 3rd Platoons where out running patrols and at 1530hrs. 1st Platoon patrol moving to BS745574 made contact with 5 VC suspects. Returning small arms fire and they killed 1 VC. The other evaded North-northwest. US personnel sighted 1 AK-47. The KIA was wearing purple and black, negative weapons, had documents with results 1 KIA and documents to be back-hauled to Liz. Swept the area, with BDE informed negative further finding. Delta Company received a call from Brigade that Warlords had 4 VC KIA in vicinity BS7343. Delta Company was alerted to have 1 Platoon stand-by and at 1740hrs 1 squad of 3rd Platoon inserted to assist animals results 9 KIA and 5 females detained. At 1800hrs Warlord animals where extracted from the Delta Company area.

 

Echo Company
January 26, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry and LZ Liz.
