Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0747hrs Effective at 0800hrs weather warning condition becomes Phase II. At 1220hrs Local weather forecast from Brigade is by 1400hrs winds 25 knots with gusts to 35 knots, at 330 degrees, no rain until tonight then expect between 6 to 8 inches. At 1830hrs S-5 at grid Bs728528 received from 7 Vietnamese children ages 10 to 14, 1 155mm HE round, 1 2375 HE rocket, 2 claymores, 1 100 belt M-60 ammo, 1 4.2 HE round, 1 81 WP round, and 1 M-79 HE round. Paid 1100 Vietnamese piasters under VIP program all rounds blown in place. At 1954hrs Charlie Battery 6-11 Artillery has Urgent Dust Off for Battery Commander 3rd degree burns over 10% of body and face, was lighting an immersion heater when it blew up; Dust Off completed at 2011hrs. At 2145hrs Area of Operation extension requested Date/Time/Grid 250600hrs to 272400hrs October 1970, Upper Right BS7423900, Upper Left BS730390, Lower left BS730370, and lower right BS745370 approved by Brigade JBM, Designated #B 80. At 2200hrs Weather report on Typhoon Kate 242000hrs recently 120 nautical miles east of Da Nang moving west at 10 knots. It is expected to reach land 0600hrs on 25 October approximately 30 miles north of Chu Lai. At 2400hrs expected increase of wind and start of rain. At 0300hrs 25 October winds will be out of northwest at 25 knots gusting to 40 knots and by 0600hrs 25 October expect winds out of northwest at 35 knots with gusting to 55 knots. Legend 1st Platoon 03-08, 2nd Platoon 53-58, 3rd Platoon 83-88, 4th Platoon 63-68 and CO 43.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
October 24, 1970

Alpha Company set up their Patrol bases and used saturation patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1005 Alpha Company requests one Urgent Dust Off for 3 US who hit a booby trap at grid BS764580. Booby Trap was Petna in a can with trip wire device. Unknown size of explosive, one US had multiple frag to face and body, the other two had minor frag wounds to the body. At 1300hrs Alpha Company 53 element moving out to patrol, the 03 element will be moving to BS763583 to check on PHAM THI CHUON who is reported to be selling rice to the VC and 4 VC stay with her last night. Get information from one female detainee who told them this name LE THI KHOI, age, wearing purple and black with negative ID picked up at grid BS758575 will send this detainee to Military Intelligence. At 1825hrs Alpha Company 03, 43, 63 in Night Defense Position at BS755588, 53 at BS741563, 03 at BS745576. At 2035hrs Alpha Company 53 lost an SOI SP4 Sears, possibly lost at Patrol Base BS758568. It was in his pocket and was not secured he has been RTO for 14 days lost between 1500hrs and 2035hrs. 1LT WILLIAM HENRY CLIFFORD IS LISTED AS KHA. 1LT William H. Clifford (died of wounds) Duc Pho GRP COD Missiles wounds to head and SP4 Paul W. Brandt where evac to 91st Evac Hospital with multiple frag wounds face and right leg and blast wounds to eves.

 

Bravo Company
October 24, 1970

At 0810hrs Bravo Company on move to Highway 1in the vicinity BS724569. Bravo Company closed on LZ Liz at 1034hrs and took over the Security Mission for the LZ.

 

Charlie Company
October 24, 1970

At 0715hrs Charlie Company 43, 63 and 03 elements in their Patrol Base at BS759624, the 86 element moving is on patrol to BS712639. At 0825hrs Charlie Company 57 element at grid BS733603 received 15 rounds of AK fire from BS728603, rounds did not come close to the element, and the 57 element still fired up the area with negative results. At 0905hrs Charlie Company 53 element at grid BS721603, received 10 rounds of enemy sniper fire from grid BS729601. They returned with small arms fire and Artillery checked area with negative finding. At 1300hrs Late Spot occurred at 232145hrs. Charlie Company sniper saw one enemy at grid BS750627 and engaged with one shot from grid BS752625, he missed due to the fact the starlight scope and weapon where not zeroed. Distance was 300 meters away and enemy was stationary, element was sent out again with negative finding. At 1500hrs Charlie Company at grid BS714605 found 3 155mm canisters in a hole blew in place and got a secondary explosion, they suspect it was a booby trap. At 1535hrs Charlie Company 85 element at grid BS732609, while moving to high grounds, flushed one male, 30 the male evaded to the south was engaged with small arms and M-79 fire at a distance of 250 meters. He was wounded in the hip found 2 old hand grenades (M26), 1 first aid packet, and small amount of documents on him Dust Off requested but man did die before it arrived 1 VC KIA. At 1640hrs Charlie Company 83 element moving to high ground, was pinned down by sniper fire coming from grid BS735623, 500 meters to their north. They are returning small arms fire and called Artillery, the 2 snipers fire total of 30 rounds semi automatic fire from enemy check area with negative finding. At 1745hrs Charlie Company 43, 63 and 03 in Night Defense Position at BS751608, 53 at BS728597 and 83 is moving to BS768534. At 1820hrs Charlie Company while digging in at Command Post, had a 60mm mortar round go off injuring 1 US and 1 RF, hole was about 12’ to 18’ deep when the explosion went off and it was located in the middle of the Command Post. Charlie Company requested an Urgent Dust Off requested for 1LT Sorter and RF from RF 712 completed at 1825hrs. Alpha Company reports 1LT William R. Sorter was evac to 91 Evac with frag wounds face and both arms and frag wounds to abdomen and both legs and SP4 Charlie H. James treated and released from B 23 Medical with multiple frag wounds to neck.

 

Delta Company
October 24, 1970

At 0920hrs Delta Company reports they are leaving LZ Liz and Bravo Company en route to LZ Liz. At 1000hrs Delta Company arrived at BS724569 using Patrol Bases and saturation patrolling. At 1930hrs Delta Company reports their evening locations 43-63-83 at BS742560, 03 BS745576, 53 at BS741563.

 

Echo Company
October 24, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for the 1-20
