Forward Area: (1-20 Infantry Headquarters) is located at LZ Liz and will continue to work with the ARVN units in their Area of Operations using Joint Operations. At 0820hrs Brigade requests Area of Operation extension for 4 ARVN Regiment Date/Time/Grid 240600hrs to 292400hrs Upper left BS6652 and Lower right BS7246 approved by CPT Parker. At 0905hrs 1-20 Infantry at BS721717 Chieu Hoi turned over to Tu Nghia Senior Advisor (CPT Ernest) captured by Alpha Company on the evening of 23 November 1970, has lead Tu Nghia, Government forces to 1 weapons cache, consisting of 3 M-16, 1 M-1 carbine, and I unidentified machinegun. At 0908hrs Helix 34 is on station and sent south of Big Reed for employment by Alpha Company, at 0944hrs Helix 34 is breaking station. At 1101hrs S-2 read out on 3 females being interrogated at Mo Duc. 1 is from C-75 commo liaison and medic, 1 is a hamlet guerilla, and 1 is a district level woman’s association leader. They also have 12 civil defendants, cook, rice carriers, 1 female youth association member, 7 males pulled from holes yesterday, have been identified as VC/VCI. 1 finances economic chief, 1 farmer association leader, and 1 Village guerilla chief. A total of 21 VC/VCI identified as to position, 14 identified as VC/VCI position. At 1103hrs Q Company purchased the following for 1 can of C Rations and 1 pack of Pall Mall for 5 Vietnamese children, 1 155mm HE rounds and 1 81mm HE round destroyed all rounds in place. At 1408hrs S-4 reports Dolphin 639 is on station for resupply. At 1651hrs Saber 76 presently in 1-20 Infantry Area of Operations Upper right BS6775 and lower left BS7664. At 2051hrs Q Company radar sighting BS657596, 5 to 6 stationary personnel and engaged with 24 HE 105mm Artillery rounds. Legend: 1st Platoon 12-18, 2nd Platoon 62-68, 3rd Platoon 82-88, 4th Platoon 32-38 and CO 44.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
November 24, 1970

At 0740hrs Alpha Company all elements close on Night Defense Position vicinity BS760593, Alpha Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS768583 destroyed a tunnel, heard 3 secondary explosions. On check of the area they found a note book and will evac the LZ Liz. Also found parts of an old M-72 LAW. At 1017hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon found a home made claymore a black disk 8" in diameter, in a thicket by a trail, vicinity BS765583, saw no wire to or from any firing devices destroyed. At 1256hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon on patrol detained 5 Vietnamese vicinity BS766589, 3 males and 2 females Kit Carson Scouts suggests all these be detained and extracted. At 1406hrs Alpha Company reacting to intelligence furnished by MO Duc MACV, the 1st Platoon Alpha Company initiated a "hole hunting" operation. They were searching vicinity BS757592 when they dug into a hedgerow and found a book with Chinese writing. The book will be evacuated to Mo Duc No other equipment or material was found. They are continuing their search. At 1500hrs A Company 1st Platoon vicinity BS757592 is a radius of 100 to 150 meters found 7 holes, with finding in 3 holes, all holes destroyed. The first hole discovered at 1520hrs produced 1 NVA Uniform, 1 US mosquito bar, 1 pair back shorts, 1 diary, and many other books. In one of the books they found some papers dated 20, 21, 22 with no month specified, another book had writing on the inside of the cover. They also found 1 can with 45 non-electrical blasting caps, and 15 electric blasting caps. At 1530hrs in the 2nd hole there was 2 VC, I Male, Tran Heang age 58, wearing all maroon. The male came out of the hole after coaxing from Vietnamese male from a near by village. The female refused to come out, she was approximately 25-30 years of age and wearing black. We had to frag the hole resulting in 1 female VC KIA. At the 3rd hole 1615hrs they found 1 POW, unknown age was some type of leader for Noghoi he had a bearded and wearing all black. He had no ID but he did have a tag and chain around his neck similar to the US Dog Tag with KMC9335957 as stamped in it. They frag the hole resulting in 1 female VC KIA. They also found 2 packs in this hole, 1st pack contained 1 wallet, razor blades, razor, ½ pounds of polished rice, 2 pounds of salt in block form, a Vietnamese type battery, 2 C type size batteries. Also 1 transistor radio, 1 M-14 magazine pouch, 1 US type deck of cards, 2 cans of unknown type, 2 black shirts, and a picture of a Vietnamese girl. In the 2nd Pack there was a comb, 2 plastic ponchos, 3 pair of blank pants, 1 black shirt, 1 white shirt, 1 blanket of unknown type and 1 spoon. Alpha Company has a total of 7 detainees to be extracted at this time. At 1850hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon vicinity 754593, while moving to the ambush location spotted 2 Vietnamese personnel. They pursued these people North, and capturing 1 Vietnamese female age 15-18 years, wearing blue and black. The other person believed to be male, escaped. Female no ID, and they sent her to Mo Duc. At 1905hrs Alpha Company 1st and 4th and Command Post in Night Defense Position at BS760593, 1st Platoon ambush BS760595, 2nd Platoon at BS757591, ambush BS756593, 3rd Platoon at BS762575, with ambush BS758588 and BS760585.

 

Bravo Company
November 24, 1970

At 0940hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon was moving toward their Patrol Base when the advance party detected 2 enemy detainees dressed in black, carrying packs, 200 meters to their west. The platoon deployed on line, but due to the terrain they could not get close enough to the enemy without being discovered. Therefore the platoon assaulted the enemy, firing small arms, 40mm and M-60. The enemy dropped their packs and evaded to the west. They continued their assault overrunning and killing 1 VC dressed in black, carrying 2 M-26 hand frag, VC poncho, documents and 400 Piasters. They are continuing their pursuit of 2 VC leaving 2 men behind to secure the 1 KIA. Bravo Company requests routine Dust Off for 1 US with 100 temp symptoms LT McIntosh completed at 1305hrs. At 1340hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon running a cloverleaf around their Patrol Base found a B-40 rocket booby trip, with pressured release type device vicinity BS755571, destroyed in place. At 1550hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon detained 1 Vietnamese female, 26, wearing all black, negative ID, also found a white parachute bag with some documents in the same area detainee and everything will be back hauled to Mo Duc.

 

Charlie Company

Charlie Company will continue their Security Mission for LZ Liz.

 

Delta Company
November 24, 1970

At 0750hrs Delta Company detainee 28 years old female, wearing green and black with no ID. Found in vicinity of Booby Trap hit last night extracted to MO DUC. At 0900hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon patrol is moving out for BS663558. At 0910hrs Delta Company 3rd Platoon patrol is moving out for BS665556. At 1005hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon patrol checkpoint 2 vicinity BS664556, 3rd Platoon ambush in location at BS658563 and patrol at checkpoint 2 vicinity BS660560 and 1st Platoon patrol moving out for BS684563. Delta Company continued their multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1635hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon patrol sighted 2 possible VC vicinity BS657542 (possible observing) the patrol. The element worked up a fire mission, and when the artillery came in, the suspects evade away from the patrol and they were too far away to pursue. At 1850hrs Delta Company 1st platoon is at BS681569, 2nd Platoon BS658558 and 1st Platoon BS81569.

 

Echo Company
November 24, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0705hrs Routine Dust Off for Recon at BS773568, Adrian and Tucker (Possible PFC Lonnie E. Tucker) 1 sick, and 1 with badly swollen ankle, Dust Off is completed at 0845hrs. At 1740hrs Recon requests Priority Dust Off vicinity BS773567, 1 US with 103 temp name Pike (Possible PFC Larry T. Pike) completed at 1750hrs. At 1934hrs Recon Platoon in location vicinity BS773567.
