Headquarters and Headquarter Company
May 24, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0030hrs Radar 3 to 5 personnel moving south to east at BS773408 with Bravo Company informed. At 0400hrs Radar sighted 6 to 10 stationary personnel at BS788440 with Bravo Company informed. At 0515hrs Radar sighted 10 to 15 stationary personnel at BS768487 and Recon could not be informed due to radio problems. At 1530hrs TMF String 71 has an unknown number of stationary personnel with metal confirmed, fired at 1830hrs 8 HE of Artillery 105mm. At 1730hrs Charlie 26 Engineer reports 22 acres were cleared in the area BS755535 to BS756435 to BS756537 to BS754538 with 35 dossier hours with 450 gallons of fuel used. 3 Bunkers were destroyed, 1 booby trap uncovered, 1 155mm and 1 105mm round were destroyed, 9 pounds of C-4 were used, 5 D7 are operational, 1 D7 deadline for air compressor and 2 CEV are operational. At 1924hrs TMF string 71 was activated with metal detected and 8 personnel moving south to north and engaged with 3HE Artillery 155mm. at 1931hrs. At 2050hrs Radar sighted 8 to 10 stationary personnel at BS788494 with Recon Platoon informed. At 2135hrs M26 Intelligence there is a minefield at BS770540 100 meters east and west and at BS788542 and 200 meters north and south there is a new trail. At 2300hrs Radar sighted 8 to 10 stationary personnel at BS774500 with Recon Platoon informed.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
May 24, 1970

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 1910hrs Alpha Company reports all access road elements are in location.

 

Bravo Company
May 24, 1970

At 0030hrs Radar spotted 3-5 personnel at BS773408 and at 0400hrs Radar spotted 6 to 10 personnel at BS788440, Bravo Company was notified and reacted to both reports. Bravo Company continued their multiple patrolling and also used multiple sweeps in their Area of Operation and continued to with ARVN Forces. At 0530hrs Bravo Company the 71 element is in their block position at 765453. At 06115hrs Bravo Company the 76 element at BS768446 a booby trap M26 hand frag grenade attached to a trip wire which was blown in place. At 0703hrs Bravo Company reports the 76 and 78 elements have linked up and closed with negative finding except for the booby trap reported earlier. At 1505hrs Bravo Company Reference the spot report at 0840hrs the results were 3 VC KIA with one VC WIA CIA. At 0806hrs the 24 element found a M26 booby trap at BS768453 with a fish line for a trip wire and second booby trap was found in the same area using the same materials. At 1930hrs Bravo Company the 26 patrol is canceled because PF refused to go.

 

Charlie Company
May 24, 1970

At 1340hrs Charlie Company as Hook 715 was going into the Command Post location for an extraction he received several rounds of small arms fire from their southeast in a wood line at grid BS743564. It is unknown if he received any hits and we are sending a patrol to the area where the fire came from. Brigade reported that Hook 715 took approximately 12 rounds of fire and the control panel was hot out and one crewmember was wounded. At 1410hrs the 02 element was moving out to check the area where hook took ground fire and spotted 2 VC with weapons and engaged them. They evaded to the east into BS746564, we are calling in Artillery and requesting gun ships and gun ships on station at 1427hrs. At 1525hrs Charlie Company we have a total of 8 VC, 6 were taken from a tunnel, one voluntarily came to LOH and one was wearing a green uniform and we found ammo and blasting caps on him. One was carrying a blue uniform and found demolitions in their possession and they have ID tags. We also have one VC KIA, one SKS captured and one M1Carbine captured, and unknown number of documents and request an IPW team for a total of 15 detainees, 13 males aging 18-50 and 2 females age 18. At 1635hrs Charlie Company reports Hook 715 was going into the 82 location and took some fire from BS744573 and received no hits. Helix 38 is checking the area and will fire 81mm in the area. At 1940hrs Charlie Company report the following is a list of the items CIA in today’s action: 6 complete blue uniforms, black pajamas, ponchos, 5 hammocks, one mess kit, medical supplies, 3 first aid pouches, 4 M26 frag. Also one magazine of carbine ammo, 9 clips of AK 47 ammo with 10 rounds each, 3 US pistol belts, one SKS, one M1 Carbine, 5 blasting caps, one set dog tags, documents and a wallet with a false ID. At 2015hrs Charlie Company the 44 element had 2 men setting up a claymore and heard movement to their front at 40 meters. Someone threw something, which exploded and believed to be a grenade. They returned fire and checked out the area with negative findings at grid BS739575. The grenade was thrown at them from their east. At 2045hrs Charlie Company the 46 element spotted one Vietnamese personnel 50 meters to their east at 50 meters and engaged and threw a hand frag with negative finding.

 

Delta Company

Delta Company is at Bronco for their Stand Down.

 

Echo Company
May 24, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0520hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Fire Mission 12 for a total expended of 78 HE and 71 Illumination rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0638hrs Recon will be at BS771483, the 01 snake will be the 02 element will be at BS775479 and the 03 snake will be at BS780490. At 1555hrs Recon Platoon will have a additional snake for tonight 04 at BS783472 to move at dark and return at 0200hrs. At 2045hrs Recon Platoon reports are in their locations.
