Headquarters and Headquarter Company
July 24, 1969

Battalion Forward: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and continued their working with the ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0805hrs Helix 35 has Air Strike going into BS700463 at this time. At 1031hrs Helix has a Air Strike going into BS824435 and at 1536hrs Helix 03 has a set of fighters on station will put in Air Strike at grid at BS823442. At 2150hrs Delta on LZ Liz reports that Bunker 21 seeing through the starlight scope 18-20 personnel 800 to 1000 metes out moving toward the south OP, calling in Artillery at grid BS763427.

Battalion Rear: Battalion Rear continued their Mission for providing general support for the Battalion. At 1945hrs Charlie Company 19 Engineer reports at BS767470, the RF 172 at LZ Max apprehended 1 Vietnamese boy planting Bouncing Betty mine and they took his name and then turned him loose.

 

Alpha Company
July 24, 1969

DELAY REPORT (DATE/Time) 232015hrs July 1969 Alpha Company at BS737448 detained 1 female while on way to Night Defense Position and upon questionings she said that VC base located at BS734472 Nui Dui (this is same place mine that blew helicopter out of air) will send her to LZ Liz in the morning. DELAY REPORT (DATE/TIME) 232330hrs July 1969, element engaged 2 VC 40-50 meters and pulled back to Night Defense Position to Night Defense Position and call in Artillery, will check area in morning. At 0620hrs Alpha Company 83 seep the area of contact last night with negative results and the 63 element was moving out of Day Logger to check out grid BS728427 and BS724426 and surrounding area with saturation patrolling. Alpha Company Night Defense Position is at BS728427 with the 63 element has snake out and they where in position.

 

Bravo Company
July 24, 1969

At 0700hrs Bravo Company Combat Assault 1st PZ 0630hrs Red LZ 0636hrs, Yellow LZ 0637hrs cold, 2nd PZ 0646hrs Yellow LZ 0655hrs hot draw fire from north of Hoi An. At 0750hrs Bravo Company sweep of the area turned up nothing of importance, only a couple of old ladies and men and one belt of M-60 ammo in a tree. At 1215hrs Bravo Company is in their Day Logger BS792473, Recon in Force the 67 element to BS801451, the 17 element to BS792488, and the 65 to BS783463. At 1917hrs in the vicinity of BS793466 had 1 US slightly injured as a results of sniper conflict has a slight wound from park of AK bullet in right arm, treated by medic out here and released. Name Sopczinski line # 25. At 1955hrs Bravo Company we are now in our Night Defense Position at BS790462 at 2030hrs we have received an incoming M-79 and AK fire, we have the position spotted and are calling in Artillery at this time 84 snake in location.

 

Charlie Company
July 24, 1969

At 1335hrs Charlie Company leaving LZ Liz at this time and by 1523hrs Charlie Company is now at grid BS738447. At 1958hrs Charlie Company now at Night Defense Position BS729449 with the 13 element snake at BS729452.

 

Delta Company
July 24, 1969

At 0737hrs Delta Company lifted to LZ Liz and taking over the Security Mission for LZ Liz.

 

Echo Company
July 24, 1969

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0625hrs 4.2 Platoon report fired DT 2, observed Mission 1 total expend: 14 HE and 4 WP rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. At 1836hrs Recon is leaving LZ Bronco for day logger at BS843460. At 1920hrs Recon Platoon at BS845382 received heavy automatic weapons fire while moving into our Night Defense Position at BS845382. Recon at this time it has ceased, would like guns ships, Sharks on station at 1930hrs. At 2154hrs Recon is located at BS837377 and a report on conflict at grid BS845382. Our Kit Carson Scout spotted and opened fire on 2 VC/NVA, one VC/NVA had steel pot, web gear and weapon, the other had web gear and a weapon. We believe these men were point men for a larger element. This was all the visual contact we were able to make. Element leader would like to stress the outstanding job that Kit Carson Scout performed.
