Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 24, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0715hrs Inferno 56 (Bravo 123 Aviation) is working APD 51 Box. 51. This HQ’s received information that an incident occurred between an US and PF Soldier at 1800hrs, Situation is as follows: A PF soldier came to the Guard position at the east end of the Access road to LZ Liz. The PF soldier took $10.00 from the jacket of PFC Watts, who was asleep at the time. The PF ran to the Village and PFC Watts followed him PFC Watts got the Vietnamese to admit taking the money and the $10.00 was returned. PFC Watts picked up his weapon at this time his weapon accidentally discharged and ricocheted off the ground and went into the next hootch. Where another PF received a superficial flash wound to the head, the injured PF came to Access Road for treatment of the wounds and returned to the Village. The incident became known when PFC Watts told SGT Campbell what happened this morning a investigation is in progress. At 1910hrs To 4 ARVN at grid BS758404 was sent to 4 ARVN so they would know that 1-20 Infantry Recon would be at that location today. At 1115hrs Convoy from Chu Lai arrived. At 1500hrs 2 ARVN Division Recon at BS720435 got 2 VC KIA, CIA 1 AK 47 and destroy I bag of rice. At 1900hrs 1-20 Infantry reports their Field Strength Alpha 51, Charlie 50, Echo 15 and HHC 16. Legend: 1st Platoon 59, 2nd Platoon 56, 3rd Platoon 89, 4th Platoon 97 and CO 29.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for Chu Lai.

 

Alpha Company
August 24, 1971

Alpha Company is at BS715300 will conduct Search and Clear operation in their Area of Operation as LZ Liz is getting ready to be turn over to the ARVN.

 

Bravo Company
August 24, 1971

Bravo Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz and Access road is clear. This is a report Q’s received information that there was an incident between an US and PF soldier at 1800hrs. PF took $10.00 from the pack of PFC Watts who was asleep at the time, PF ran to the Village and PFC Watts got the Vietnamese to admit talking the money and #10.00 was returned. At that time the weapon by PFC Watts accidentally discharged and richoltued off the ground and went into the next hooch where another PF received a superficial flesh wound to the head, taken to Access Road for treatment and returned to Village, PFC Watts reported to SGT Campbell and an investigation is in progress.

 

Charlie Company
August 24, 1971

Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz and LZ Eagle. Charlie Company Medic awoke from sleep grabbed his weapon ran to fighting position and began firing, the person at this fighting position with him asked him to put his weapon on save and then talked him into giving up his weapon. Individual has been screaming every night since he came to Charlie Company had a problem of this type, but these was the first time he became uncontrollable, didn’t recognize people and unfriendly during the day. Dust Off completed at 0100hrs to insure the personnel on LZ Eagle.

 

Delta Company
August 24, 1971

Delta Company first PZ is at 0553hrs and last LZ is at 0904hrs move to LZ Vanguard to work on Security Mission. At 1300hrs LZ Liz was turned over to the 4th ARVN Regiment and the 1-20 Infantry is now located at LZ Vanguard at BS577433.

 

Echo Company
August 24, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 0647hrs Recon Platoon is moving out to LZ Liz at this time and closed on LZ Liz at 0715hrs. At 2009hrs Recon is moving their Night Defense Position at BS764414 and closed at 2025hrs.
