Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 24, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0405hrs Radar at 2020hrs 6 to 9 stationary personnel were sighted at BS748364 and engaged with 16 HE rounds of 105 Artillery. At 2225hrs 1 to 5 stationary personnel at BS732479 where engaged with 9 HE rounds of 155 Artillery. At 2305hrs 1 to 5 stationary personnel were engaged with 16 HE rounds of 105 Artillery at grid BS738403. At 0355jrs 3 to 6 stationary personnel were sighted at BS735414 and engaged with 14 HE rounds of 105 Artillery. At 0435hrs 1 to 5 stationary personnel were sighted at BS732415 and engaged with 8 HE rounds of 105 Artillery. At 0930hrs Warlords and Animals, Warlord Lead spotted enemy moving in the rocks. He engaged with rockets at BS7245 and the Animals are to be inserted. At 1110hrs Animals we found blood trails near the bottom of the hill leading into a cave at grid BS7245. At 1540hrs A Calvary Operation the initial LZ with A Calvary personnel Animals was at 0825hrs and elements from Charlie and Delta Companies for a total of 11 LZ beginning at 0825hrs to 1528hrs. For August 23, 1970 26 Engineer reports a total of 26 hours were worked clearing 50 acres in the area BS693539 to BS695537 to BS690534 to BS690537 destroying 12 bunkers. Also destroyed 2 155 rounds, 1 40mm round, 1 105 round all with VIP funds with 5 D7 operational, 1 D7 deadline, 1 AC and 1 M548 operational. At 1811hrs 26 Engineer a total 40 acres were cleared (24 Hours worked) in the area BS688543 to BS691543 to BS687538 and BS686541. Also destroying 7 Bunkers, 5 fighting positions and destroying 25 meters of trench and 30 meters of tunnels and 1 155 round. Also have 5 D7 operational with 1 deadline, also 1 AC and 1 M548 operational. At 1900hrs A Calvary Operation detainee summary sent to Military Intelligence from Delta Company Detainees are 2 males age 55 and 45 with negative ID, Charlie Company at BS728436 picked up 2 males 12 years old. Also Alpha Company at BS686551 picked up 5 females, at 38, 40, 47, 40 with no ID or suspicious and they where sent to MACV MO Duc from Delta Company 11 females with no ID’s. Also Alpha Company 8 females and 3 males with no ID all other detainees were released.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued

 

Alpha Company
August 24, 1970

At 0840 Alpha Company and E Troop had moved to blocking Area again BS693549 to BS681548. At 0935hrs Alpha Reports we have 15 adult detainees and 18 Vietnamese children at BS686551 and IPW team is requested from Brigade. At 1320hrs Alpha Company 09 element found a ton of rice in bins and hooch at BS686551. It was locally grown from last harvest and unpolished, in good condition, turn over to PF 148. Mo Duc said it was 1 ton of rice.

 

Bravo Company
August 24, 1970

At 1154hrs Bravo Company 04 element is receiving sniper fire, 2-3 rounds, an AK or M1 carbine at BS727605. It came from 300 meters from the north and still receiving sporadic fire from an estimated 3 to 5 VC and artillery is going into the area. At 1205hrs Bravo Company has request an Urgent Dust Off for 1 US with a gunshot wound in the back by sniper fire at BS728604 Guns were requested and are on station completed at 1229hrs, Name Pierce, and at 1232hrs Bravo Company the 1st Platoon leader, Sgt. Cobbs is in convulsions and urgent Dust Off is requested at grid BS707626 and completed at 1250hrs. At 1340hrs Bravo Company 01 element on Hill 19 and Command Post is receiving incoming 60mm rounds, 6 rounds total from BS713582. It was a small type of rocket of some type from the west. At 1445hrs the 01 element while moving into a tree line from their LZ, had a PF hit a booby trap at BS728612, it was a small hand frag and he has small wounds. The tactical situation is such that a Dust Off cannot be made immediately but was completed at 1535hrs. At 1452hrs Bravo Company the sharks area working out in the area of the booby trap and a rocket cause a secondary explosion at BS728612. At 1515hrs Bravo Company threw frag into the tunnel which collapsed. This was A Calvary Operation the initial LZ with A Calvary personnel (Animals) was at 0825hrs. Bravo Company LZ was 1423hrs to 1528hrs. At 1550hrs Bravo Company at BS727611 the 01 element hit a frag booby trap with a trip wire and 3 US received slight frag, but do not require Dust Off Line # 100, 97, 22. Bravo Company the PF with the 95 element set some hootches on fire at BS736625, the first 3 they set resulted in secondary explosions and the size of the ordnance was estimated at 155. This Ville does not have civilians living in it. At 1621hrs Bravo Company we request an Urgent Dust Off for 1 Vietnamese with a gunshot wound in the back and out the kidney area, she was hit by a stray round from the 95 element at BS735625. At 1635hrs Bravo Company 45 element swept to the 1st block area of BS722624 with negative finding and continued their sweep. Bravo Company reports the 01 and the 04 elements have linked up and moving to BS712584 and 43 and 41 elements have linked up and are moving to the Command Post at BS684607. The 95 element has closed last night location and will move to ambush at BS719681. At 1830hrs Bravo Company has closed last night location and will move to ambush at BS719681. At 1830hrs Bravo Company checked the area, which was claimed to be have been shot up by Gun Ships at BS693620. Bravo Company and PF were engaged by the RF/ PF when attempting to across the river. Coordination was made to across the river when Bravo Company arrived they found the people willing to talk about the incident, but reluctant to show Bravo Company the area. There was a definite reluctance on the part of forces to show Bravo Company the area of the incident. Summary at 1220hrs Charlie 09 element detained 10 4 male and 6 female brought to LZ Liz. At 1930hrs at BS690592 the PF 144 ambush made contact with approximately 20 VC, not confirmed by US personnel and the 42 element is supporting them with 50 cal at their location. There were 4 PF KIA and 8 PF WIA and PF 166 is moving to help out and 3 M-16 lost in area of contact. There are 2 bodies area at the Bravo Company 42 element location, 5 of 8 WIA were Dusted Off and 3 WIA are at the 41 Command Post and are not serious. The PF 166 is staying in the area of contact until the body and weapons are found. The PF were ambush and hit by B40 rockets and AK47 fire and hand frag. Bravo Company reports that PFC James N. Pierce was evac to the 91st Evac Hospital with gun shot wound right arms and right flank also we have the following treated and released in the field, SFT Raymond Sanders with frag wounds both legs and left arm, PFC John M. Reynolds treated and released in the field frag wound right leg and right arms, (I believe it to be James H. Shell) PFC James H. Shell treated and released in field with frag wound to right leg and right arms, PFC Michael D. Sullivan treated and released from hospital with frag wound to right leg and PVT David E. elcher(SP?) treated and released in the field with frag wounds both knees.

 

Charlie Company
August 24, 1970

At 0655hrs Charlie Company all elements moving to BS777446 PZ after the Combat Assault. At 1040hrs Charlie Company is at grid BS737435. The 41 element found 10 packages of noodles, 2 pair of sandals, one Vietnamese poncho, 2 cans of mackeral, 3 cans of condensed milk and 20 bags of candy we found in a woodpile outside of a hootch. The 09a element will go to BS747438. At 1041hrs Charlie Company the 01 element found an 105 rounds not booby trap and blown in place. At 1140hrs Charlie Company the 91 element has 2 male detainees at grid BS725435, one is 14 years old and tried to evade and like he had hit a booby trap earlier due to the scars and dirty with long hair. The PF say he is VC and held and tagged for extraction grid BS725435. At 1255hrs Charlie Company we requested a routine Dust Off for one enemy personnel at 75 meters at BS739419. They evaded to the east. One of the enemies was hit in the hip and Dusted Off he was a male 18, and carrying a pack with a wallet and first aid pouch, poncho and canteen. He was wearing a NVA shirt and pants (Blue). At 1926hrs Charlie Company the 09, 41, and 51 area moving into the Night Defense Position at BS730430. At 2030hrs Charlie Company the 01 element is at BS739413 and the 93 element is at BS717440. At 2045hrs Charlie Company the 44 element is at BS727436.

 

Delta Company
August 24, 1970

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 1105hrs Delta Company 09 element has one male detainee at grid BS744576. He was carrying a green poncho, extra clothing, and 2-3 pounds of rice and had no ID. He was approximately 40 years old and he had pack strap marks. We will tag and hold him. At 1220hrs Delta Company 09 element has 4 males and 6 females at BS740574, extracted to LZ Liz.

 

Echo Company
August 24, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0400hrs 4.2 Mortar Platoon reports Fire Missions 2 for a total expended HE 9 rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for the 1-20 Infantry on LZ Liz.
