Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 1934hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC reports TMF reports at 19293676 TFC sighted 4 personnel moving southwest to northeast 2-3 miles per hour with metal, at 1924hrs responded with 27 HE rounds Artillery 105mm.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 1735hrs Base Defense request that gate remain open for tow truck bring in vehicle from E Troop vehicle in at 1925hrs. At 1740hrs E Troop 1 Calvary at BS923227 hit a mine results in 3 US WIA, Dust Office completed at 1725hrs. Vehicle was 10 meters south off road on eastside, was a total loss. Late Report of E Troop 3 WHA personnel 1 WHA Died of Wounds, 1 WHA with fracture spine, and 1 WHA with a broken leg. E Troop Commanding Officer reports damage done by a 100-200 pound shaped charge, vehicle has been brought back to LZ Bronco and Military Police are investigating incident. E Troop 1st Cavalry reports Killed in Hostile Action was PFC OSCAR THOMAS FRANDIS, WHA SGT John L. Mc Carl with FX Right Leg, abdomen injury and lacerations to face and PFC Phillip A Cole (SMITE) Spine injury both to 91 Evac Hospital.

 

Alpha Company
April 24, 1970

At 0651hrs Alpha Company the 43 element closed on to BS744444. At 0710hrs 03- 04 closed on 01 at BS745442 and at 0810hrs Alpha Company 31 picked up 2 female detainees at grid BS746472. At 1850hrs Routine Dust Off for 1 US with temp of 103 and possible malaria Name PFC Healy dust off complete 1907hrs grid BS735440. At 1900hrs Alpha Company Urgent Dust Off for two US one SP4 Sutton with multiple frag wounds of the abdomen and upper right leg and one US SP4 Blackwell with minor frag wounds of the back and lower right leg and thigh. US were injured by a dud M-79 round was set off when struck by a entrenching tool. The M-79 round was set off when struck by entrenching tool. Action happened at BS742455, the Dust Off complete at 1905hrs. At 1948hrs Alpha Company elements Night Defense Position at BS747465, the 64 to at BS753464, 03 at BS723437 and 04 at BS724443, and 44 at BS733453. SFC Mihaly Toth was evac to 91 Evac sick, SP4 William A. Sutton where evac to the 27 Surgical Hospital with Multiple frag wounds (Friar) and SP4 Earl L. Blackwell treated at B 23 Medical with frag wound to left shoulder.

 

Bravo Company
April 24, 1970

At 0915hrs Bravo Company request for Urgent Dust Off for one Vietnamese female with multiple frag wounds to the back, she kicked a dud M-79 and it went off completed by Dolphin 14 at 0923hrs. At 1708hrs Bravo Company 03 element 185 PF platoon, they found 4 female detainee no ID ages 15, 18, 28, and 30 at 191439 also 1 male age 15 will go to MACV. At 2355hrs Bravo Company RF from the 66 element, compound spotted 2-5 personnel at BS794380 going into a Ville 150 to 200 meters east. ARVN engaged the personnel in Ville and the personnel were looking for re supply.

 

Charlie Company
April 24, 1970

Charlie Company has the Security Mission for LZ Liz with roving patrols around the access roads. Charlie Company has a SRRP at BS736420.

 

Delta Company
April 24, 1970

At 1212hrs Delta Company request Urgent Dust Off. For two US WHA with multiple frag wounds of head, chest and shoulders, at this grid BS760360. The Common Post group with D-41 found (4) 6’ X 9’ camouflaged hootches located along the trail vicinity BS765355. Common Post group consisting of CO, Arty FO, Arty FO and 4.2 FO entered the first three hootches. A scout dog handler observed the Common Post group inside the hootch searching through a basket. There was a hand grenade in basket with pin pulled out partially and exploded when material was lifted from grenade, appeared that materials in basket was clothing and papers. Results 3 US KHA CAPT JAMES ROBERT FOWLER, 1LT RICHARD GEORGE GARDNER (Charlie Battery 6-11 Artillery) died prior to Dust Off. PFC FRED DUANE LARSON (Charlie Battery 6-11 Artillery) was killed instantly, LISTED AS KHA and 4.2 FO SP4 Ronald Primavera (Echo Company) WHA time of incident 1210hrs and attached to the 91st Evac Hospital (SMITE). At 2100hrs Delta Company reports their Night Defense Position at BS758391 with multiple ambushes out in their Area of Operations.

 

Echo Company
April 24, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 1420hrs 1-20 Infantry is en route to LZ at this time, request clearance to move them from LZ Bronco along BS821389 to area of night operations at BS825405 between 1700 to 1800hrs approved by CPT Shea 11 Brigade. At 2000hrs Recon Platoon reports their location at BS836430. At 2100hrs Recon reports their locations 61 at BS736430, 62 BS830415, 63 at BS843411 and 64 BS835424. At 2255hrs Recon Platoon at BS834424 the 64 element spotted 3 personnel to their north approximately 75-100 meters away, unable to determine if they were armed or type of clothing. Engaged with small arms, 3 personnel evade into the brush line. Called for Artillery illumination checked area with negative finding and will check again at first light. Did not receive return fire. Echo Company reports SP4 Ronald Primavera was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital (11C20 see Delta Company SMITE).
