Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0740hrs 1-20 Infantry Dolphin 15 is on station for re supply. At 0755hrs 1-20 Infantry Helix 37 is on station at this time. At 0830hrs 1-20 Infantry Primo 3 is on station at this time and broke station at 0935hrs. At 0930hrs Dolphin 15 has broken station. At 1200hrs 1-20 Infantry Helix 31 is on station at this time working for Alpha Company. At 1305hrs Dolphin 340 is on station for re supply. At 1650hrs Q Company Nui Vong BS6955600, requests routine Dust Off for 1 US with possible Hepatitis, S7162 from Echo Company Bird #57, estimates 30 minutes, Dust Off completed at 1715hrs. At 1345hrs 1-20 Infantry Helix 39 is on station at this time. At 2015hrs 1-20 Infantry Saber 44 is on station to check out Bravo Company 3rd Platoon sighting of 60 VC/NVA at grid BS719412 and at 2035hrs Artillery 105 Illumination fired and EOM at 2045hrs proximity of friendly. Spotted light and possible movement at 721413 and expended on area and broken station at 2050hrs. At 2112hrs 1-20 Infantry to Nui Vong from Battalion S-3: 1. Have IOS and radar scan Song Ve Bridge tonight until 28 May 1971, report activity ASAP. 2. What is problem with radar UR location, understand it is operating ½ a night, how can we remedy? At 2130hrs MACV Mo Duc requested gun ships team for contact vicinity BS767472 (Thach Tru) VC/NVA attacked Ville with 82mm mortar, small arms, automatic weapon and 57mm recoilless rife fire. OP MAX received sporadic small arms fire. At 2145hrs MACV reported negative need for gun ships, the contact had subsided. At 2200hrs To Brigade S-3 from Battalion S-3 change in plans, cancelled Area of Operations extension into 4-21 Infantry Area of Operation, was acknowledge. At 2323hrs 1-20 Infantry Saber 40 spotted 3 bunkers and 2 hootches, is expending on area. Destroyed 2 hootches, is expending on area, Destroyed 2 hootches and 1 bunker. At 0050hrs BS777562, confirms 3 hootches and 1 bunker destroyed, 1 male dressed in black KIA (credited to Naval guns), broke station at 0105hrs. At 2335hrs To Alpha Company from S-3 Area of Operation boundary change Area of Operation Maroon is now bounded by BS6455, BS6755, BS6753, BS7053, BS7050, BS6450 and BS6455. Delta Company to operation in Area of Operation BS7053 to BS4352, BS7347, BS7047, BS7052, will conduct a Combat Assault April 28 1971. At 2340hrs 1-20 Infantry To Liaison Officer 1-20 Infantry at 4 ARVN from S-3: Insure ARVN Sensor Boxes cancelled effective ASAP until 7 May unless notified sooner. Legend: 1st Platoon 51, 2nd Platoon 26, 3rd Platoon 13, 4th Platoon 17, CO-66.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
April 23, 1971

At 0650hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon is moving out to Patrol Base vicinity BS673544. At 1110hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon has closed on BS683513. At 1640hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 1, vicinity BS681513. At 1932hrs Alpha Company Command Post and 4th Platoon at BS680537, 3rd Platoon at BS672541, 1st Platoon and 2nd Platoon at BS679511, 1st Platoon ambush at BS679508, 2nd Platoon ambush at BS686512.

 

Bravo Company
April 23, 1971

At 0520hrs Bravo Company, BS714468 at 0520hrs Bravo Company called and stated Artillery hitting close proximity 600 meters, a check fire was immediately called but end of mission had already gone into effect. At 0525hrs Bravo Company stated one man had a minor cut to finger wasn’t serious. At 0835hrs Bravo Company Command Post and 1st Platoon in Patrol Base, at BS731437, 3rd Platoon Patrol Base at BS706429 and 1st Platoon Patrol is moving out to BS700470. At 0935hrs 174 Aviation at BS725615, 1 UH-1H received small arms fire while conditioning a Combat Assault at 0’ and 0 knots received amount of hits in the engine. Air Craft landed at LZ Snoopy to check air craft with results 6 hits in engine and hydraulic system. At 1440hrs Bravo Company while closing on Patrol Base, bought 2 M-79 HE rounds from Vietnamese children paid with SP candy, blew in place. At 1800hrs Bravo Company Command Post and 1st Platoon Night Defense Position will be 200 meters south of Pre plan location at BS727466, will move to this when dark enough. At 1835hrs Bravo Company vicinity BS726468 while moving to Night Defense Position, Command Post group stopped to rest. Searching the area they found 2 cans of .30 Caliber ammo, approximately 650 rounds in real good shape, no rust, printed on the boxes was 400 .30 Caliber and on the other box was 20 .30 caliber also found 2 dud 155 rounds with Petna removed. At 1850hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon is moving to their Night Defense Position, at BS725412. At 1910hrs 3rd Platoon spotted 60 VC with packs and weapons at BS719412, responded with Artillery 105 WP fired at 1920hrs and HE at 1923hrs and with 4.2 fired WP Mortar at 1924hrs and HE at 1928hrs. Personnel evaded to the Southwest when 1st WP round went off. At 1930hrs 4.2 Mortar fire was check fired at 1930hrs 1 round landed inside 3rd Platoon perimeter (negative casualties). At 1935hrs the HE Rounds of Artillery 105mm, reports end of Mission at 1935hrs. At 2007hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon closed on their Night Defense Position after checking area of sighting, swept the area with negative results.

 

Charlie Company

Charlie Company has the Security Mission for LZ Bronco Stand Down.

 

Delta Company
April 23, 1971

Delta Company continued their Security Mission at LZ Liz and Road Security.

 

Echo Company
April 23, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry is back on LZ Liz. SP4 David K Sanger was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital (11C20).
