Headquarters and Headquarter Company
September 22, 1968

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Chevy and will continued to work with ARVN units and Special Forces in their Area of Operations. The 1-20 Infantry begins their part in Operation CHAMPAIGN GROVE and OPCON to Task Force GALLOWAY. At Valley Force TOC reports LZ Chevy is no on Red Alert but reports HA Thanh Special Force Camp the surrounding areas are being hit, OP 7 at BS379691 and OP 4 at BS365702. OP 7 and 3 are under fire and OP 4 is surrounded by VC and under fire.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 0245hrs LZ Bronco reports Duc Pho received 14 rounds unknown type mortar rounds with no casualties or damage. At 0807hrs Bravo Company 19 Engineer at BS750505 reports EM was digging for mine when Vietnamese on a motor bike detonated mine with results 1 US KHA, 2 Vietnamese KHA with 2 US in area with WHA (M), also found a bouncing betty mine at BS774455 destroyed in place (info only).

 

Alpha Company
September 22, 1968

At 0440hrs Alpha Company three Out Post of the HA THANH Special Forces Camp came under fire and enemy ground attack. Alpha Company in a Night Defense Position adjacent to the Special Forces Camp was given the mission to move to the Out Post’s as a relief force. At 0425hrs request Spooky, firing artillery at this time. 0625hrs vicinity BS376695, Alpha company engaged 1 NVA evading west, could not see the body but would try to find when the fire lifts. HA THANH was occasionally receiving B-40 rocket fire at this time and Alpha Company would try to locate the fire. At 0710hrs when Alpha Company approached the area where they engaged the NVA they found 2 NVA playing dead. The NVA attempted to evade, and engaged resulting in 2 NVA KIA, and 1 carbine CIA. Alpha Company continued to move toward the Out Post. At 0721hrs vicinity BS376694 engaged 1 NVA KIA and 1 AK-47. Alpha Company continued to move toward the Out Post 7 and upon approaching the hill location of the Out Post at 0813hrs has one WHA serious. The Command and Control helicopter for the 1st Battalion 20th Infantry received an RPG round which hit the tail rotor resulting in 4 WHA (M) the helicopter was forced to set down at HA THANH. Alpha Company continued their assault to regain the hill and succeeded in pushing the enemy off the hill. At 0846hrs, while pursuing the enemy into a small group of huts at the northern base of the hill (BS380696) 3 NVA who evading were taken under fire resulting in 3 NVA KIA. A few minutes later, Alpha Company found 1 NVA hiding in a hole at the same location, 1 NVA CIA. Fifteen minutes later, in the same area, an unknown size enemy in bunkers and tunnels took Alpha Company under fire. Fire was returned and the firefight continued for approximately two and half-hours. Alpha Company dispersed the enemy and found 10 NVA KIA, 3 AK-47, 1 RPD machine gun, and 1 57RR. Alpha Company had 1 WHA (E). Alpha Company searched the area contact then started to sweep further east through the huts. At 1430hrs vicinity BS382695 they again engaged an NVA force in bunkers and tunnels and were very successful in routing the enemy without friendly casualties. Enemy losses were 15 NVA KIA. Captured equipment is as follows: 1 US 45calibur pistol, 2 Chi Com flare pistols, 8 AH-47, 1 RPG-2 rocket launcher, 1 field telephone, 1 PA set, 1700AK-47 rounds, 15 57mm rounds, 28 Chi Com hand grenades, 1 bangalore torpedo, 6 B-40 Rockets and 5 boosters for the B-40 Rockets. Alpha Company set up Night Defense Position at the base of the hill. Alpha Company reports SGT RANDALL PATRICK LESS LISTED AS KHA (Died of wounds). Alpha Company reports that PFC William M. Passler and SP4 Dennis E. Buresh where evac with Frag wounds to the 27th Surgical Hospital and SSGT Joseph A. Tocbell with gunshot wounds to the 2nd Surgical Hospital.

 

Bravo Company
September 22, 1968

Captain George F. Robb assumed command of Bravo Company. At 0922hrsBravo Company conducts a Combat Assault to LZ BS388601. At 1300hrs Bravo Company conducts a Combat Sweep Operation and reports their location at BS383594.

 

Charlie Company
September 22, 1968

Charlie Company is preparing to move to secured LZ for tomorrow movement to LZ Dottie and future Operation. At 1215hrs Charlie Company at BS3905580 reports sniper fire with 1 US WHA (E). Charlie Company reports SP4 Larry Waterstreet has gunshot wound to 27th Surgical Hospital.

 

Delta Company
September 22, 1968

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Chevy.

 

Echo Company
September 22, 1968

Echo Company is located at LZ Chevy where Battalion Forward is and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and Base Defense elements on LZ Chevy. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Chevy where they continue to provide direct fire support for the (1-20 Infantry Battalion).
