Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0125hrs Radar has 5 to 6 personnel that where moving southeast at grid BS675612 and at 0140hrs they were stationary, engaged with 81mm mortar fired 18 HE rounds at 0157hrs. At 0215hrs TMF Fire Mission time called 0155hrs String 67 Target A Stationary target with negative confirmation of metal engaged at 0210hrs with 8 VT rounds 105mm Artillery. At 0308hrs TMF Fire Mission time called 0256hrs String 67 Target A Stationary Target with negative confirmation of metal and engaged at 0300hrs with 8 VT rounds 105mm Artillery. At 0450hrs TMF Fire Mission Time called 0420hrs String72 Target B a stationary target medal was confirmation, negative clearance due to proximity of friendly. At 0901hrs AMC on station Battalion Commander departed at 0902hrs for Combat Assault of Alpha and Bravo Companies. 1 PZ 0915hrs Bravo 43-83 LZ BS754548, 2 PZ 0928hrs Bravo 03-53 LZ BS742561, 3 PZ 0936hrs Bravo 63 LZ BS754548, 4 PZ 0946hrs Alpha 03-43 LZ BS755586, 5 PZ 0957hrs Alpha 53 LZ BS763567, 6 PZ 1003hrs Alpha 83 LZ BS775528. At 1020hrs Battalion Commander returned to LZ Liz Combat Assault completed. At 1700hrs 26 Engineer at grid BS756433 blew 2 4.2 rounds and 2 WP in the vicinity of trash dump. PFC Hinson of Delta Company was walking toward the top of hill was hit in the ankle with a piece of frag. Urgent Dust Off at 1705hrs Dust Off, completed at 1720hrs. At 2040hrs Area of Operation extension for 4-21 Infantry Date/Time/Grid ASAP to 232400hrs from BS810430 west along 43 grid to highway 1, south along highway 1 to Area of Operation boundary Purpose to facilitate their Eagle Fight tomorrow was approved at 2041hrs by Colonel Lynch. At 2045hrs PPS-5 Radar site on Nui Vong reports enemy in defensive wire, 100 to 150 meters to southwest. Element picked up target with starlight scope and patrol sensor intrusions devices. Element is engaging enemy with M-79 and M-60 and M-16 fire. Fired 81 HE and Illumination rounds, Element has taken 1 M-79 round and reports seeing 8 personnel in the wire and then about 5 minutes later they saw 6 persons in a riverbed. Gun ships is requested and on station at 2135hrs. They engaged all possible avenues of approach and dead space around element location expending all ammo. Gun Ships and Flare Ships broke station at 2159hrs with negative findings. At 2210hrs MACV Mo Duc requested information of our contact and reported that 1 of their elements from Hghia Hanh located across the river observed 2 boatloads of personnel crossing the river east to west vicinity grid BS681602 at 2200hrs. Radar element is on 100% alert with negative US casualties or damage. At 2323hrs Radar has spotted a silhouette target east of their position on a mountaintop. It was 800 meters away at grid BS700602 and now observing area. At 2345rhs Radar took 2 rounds of 60mm mortar 100 meters to the south outside their perimeter from grid BS694592. Proximity was 650 meters, engaged firing 81mm mortar total expenditure 47 HE and 102 illumination rounds.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
October 22, 1970

Alpha Company and Bravo Company conduct a Combat Assault into a new location, Alpha Company 1st LZ BS755586, 2nd LZ BS763567 and 3rd LZ BS775528. At 1250hrs Alpha Company 83 element found 1 60mm HE mortar round at grid BS775528. It was lying in the open. A new round with casting still wrapped around it, blown in place. At 1915hrs Alpha Company while moving to night Defense Position received 16 small arms rounds from AK 47 and M-16 from 250 meters to their southeast, 43 and 03 elements immediately engaged with small arms fire and M-60 fire. Negative Artillery fired due to proximately of friendly Ville. Will Check out at first light tomorrow (too dark to check out tonight). At 1949hrs Alpha Company element 05 is location is at BS764584, 55 at BS759565 also at BS782530.

 

Bravo Company
October 22, 1970

At 0715hrs Bravo Company while in their Night Defense Position at grid BS750566 received 3 M-79 rounds, 350 meters from their Southeast at grid BS746567, results 3 US WIA engaged the enemy with small arms and M-79 fire. Artillery fired and the 53 element check out area when the Artillery finished with negative finding. At 0720hrs Bravo Company has Urgent Dust Off for 2 US injured in contact Lowe with frag wounds to face, chest, and arms, Hiser with frag wounds to chest completed at 0730hrs. At 0735hrs Bravo Company routine Dust Off for 1 US injured in contact, Belke with frag wounds to hand and fingers completed at 0845hrs. Bravo Company conducts a Combat Assault at 1st PZ 0915hrs last LZ 0945hrs to BS754548. At 1015hrs Bravo Company 43 and 83 element moving out of the LZ found a 45 Cal ammo can hidden in hedgerow. The Ammo Can contained the following medical supplies, 9 first aid bandages, 2 rolls tape, 13 small glass red liquid, 2 small bottles of pills, etc along with a medical instruction book, plus names of patients and the type of treatment they are receiving, all items to be brought to LZ Liz at grid BS755549. At 1055hrs Bravo Company 03 element has 1 male detainee, 26, no ID picked up a grid BS742561 will back haul to Brigade Military Intelligence. Bravo Company reports that PFC Kenneth L. Kiser evac to 27 Surgical with frag wound upper chest, PFC Ernest D. Lowe (36X) was evac to the 91st Evac Hospital with multiple frag wounds left arm, left thigh, neck and left ear, PFC Kevin E Bates (11C) treated and released for B 23 Medical and SGT Dale J. Balke (11C) treated and released from 13 Medical.

 

Charlie Company
October 22, 1970

Charlie Company set up Patrol Bases and used saturation patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0833hrs Charlie Company in preplanned Patrol Base 43, 63 and 03 at BS752620. At 1700hrs Charlie Company 07 element while returning to the Patrol Base received 1 round sniper fire 400 meters to their north at BS737615. Returned fire small arms and M-79 fire, negative Artillery fired due to friendly Ville, swept area of contact negative finding. At 1905hrs Charlie Company 53, 55 and 58 in location at BS728615, with the 53 ambush at BS725613 and the 55 ambush at BS730614.

 

Delta Company
October 22, 1970

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 1700hrs 26 Engineer at grid BS756433 blew 2 4.2 rounds and 2 WP in the vicinity of trash dump. PFC Hinson of Delta Company was walking toward the top of hill was hit in the ankle with a piece of frag. Urgent Dust Off at 1705hrs Dust Off completed at 1720hrs. Delta Company reports PFC Francis C. Hinson JR Non Battle injury treated at B 23 Medical with frag wound right foot.

 

Echo Company
October 22, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0737hrs Recon had negative findings in the area of last nights contact, vicinity grid BS716436. At 1050hrs Recon 05 element is at BS738428. At 1100hrs Recon reports in reference to bush hat found by Recon at 1935hrs on 21 October 1970 at grid BS716436 after engaging 1 individual. The hat had QUAN GIAI PHONG MIEN NAW embroidered on it. At 1925hrs Recon 05 reports their location at BS733425.
