Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0005hrs MACV Mo Duc, Nui Ong Do, called Dust Off at 0007hrs have 4 Vietnamese all Urgent, grid BS768533, had infiltrators inside compound and populated area, threw hand frag, at least 22 people injured Dust Off completed at 0040hrs. At 1310hrs 1-20 Infantry SSGT Duguau inspected bunkers 8, 9, 13 and 14 all were satisfactory. At 0400hrs LZ Liz Bunkers 6, 7, 8, 9 were inspected all were satisfactory. At 0617hrs 1-20 Infantry Bunkers 1, 2, 13, 15, 16, and 17 were inspected by LT Waugh all satisfactory. At 0800hrs LZ Liz Access Road now is clear. At 0905hrs LZ Liz Access Road Security Platoon reports 1 US while walking down road to the east received small amount of fragmentation in arm from bullet fired from RF Compound. It was friendly fire, believed to be a ricochet. Line # 7611 Mayne from Delta Company sent back to rear, vicinity BS758436. At 0941hrs LATE SPOT: MACV Mo Duc DATE/TIME at 212240 in the vicinity BS733538 had 4 to 5 VC infiltrated hamlet Nui Khoang with negative casualties and unknown enemy casualties. At 0941hrs LATE SPOT: MACV Mo Duc at 212245 vicinity BS768533 VC infiltrators threw hand grenades into Nui Ong Do, results: 1 PF, 5 PSDF, 1 National Police, 5 RD cadre and 10 civilians WIA. At 0945hrs LATE SPOT: MAX RF 103 vicinity BS768466 approximately VC squad fired 4 B 40 rockets into ambush site, results 4 RF WIA all minor wounds. At 1050hrs Mo Duc PRU will have a raid operation from 221000 to 230600 on grid Box BS737494 to BS742498 to BS743484 to BS747486. At 1610hrs TO Brigade S-3 FROM 1-20 Infantry S-3: Requests the following support to repair and straighten light poles along access road, 1 wrecker from 723rd Maintenance 1000-1130 23 May. Also need 1 bucket loader, from 26 Engineer Company 0800-1600hrs 24 May 1971, please confirm request. At 1630hrs 1-20 Infantry: 1. Reference 11 Brigade Confidential Message, Subject: Installation readiness, DATE/TIME/GRID 141200 May 1971, 2. This unit plans to comply with referenced message 23 May 1971. At 1640hrs 1-20 Infantry Dolphin 18 broke station. At 2108hrs LZ Liz Practice Alert has started: 2110hrs Reaction Force 100%, at 2115hrs Artillery Reaction Force is 100%, at 2115hrs Alpha Company is 100%, at 2128hrs Practice Alert is terminated. At 2134hrs 1-20 Infantry Saber Black on station to work Boxes 69 and 63 at BS805406-camouflaged hooch with bunker, engaging. Saber Black station at 2210hrs diverted by Brigade. At 2200hrs TO Brigade S-3 FROM 1-20 Infantry S-3: Alert held at 222108hrs May 1971 initiated by emergency alternate signal for a 100% Alert in case of ground attack, Ground Attack proved also as bunker guard wanted to fire a hand held parachute flare but mistakenly fire wrong type flare. This unit will still comply with 11 Brigade message, Subject Installation Readiness, DATE/Time/Grid 141200hrs May 1971 at later time. ADD: Reaction of units on hill was excellent and Alert rated satisfactory. At 2210hrs LZ Liz, Major Edwards inspected bunkers 12, 13 and Quad 50: # 12 was OK, 13 Mears (?) didn’t have helmet nor flak jacket, Quad 50’s 2 individuals didn’t have helmets and flak jackets nor did any of the people know the challenge or password. Legend: 1st Platoon 34, 2nd Platoon 05, 3rd Platoon 89, 4th Platoon 78, CO-07.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 1830hrs Headquarters and Headquarter Company 1-20 Infantry while moving north on highway 1 a 2½ ton vehicle passed a lambretta, on the side of the road beside the lambretta stood a PF. He aimed his M-16 at the truck and when they were approximately 50 meters he let go a burst of automatic small arms fire, negative casualties or damage.
Alpha Company

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0310hrs Alpha Company SSGT Duguau inspected Bunker line 8,9,13 and 14 all satisfactory. At 2108hrs LZ Liz Practice Alert at 2110hrs and at 2115hrs Alpha Company is 100%. At 2128hrs Practice Alert is terminated and Alert was rated as satisfactory.
Bravo Company

Bravo Company continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1850hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon had 1 Mechanical Ambush detonated at grid BS706439. The 3rd Platoon started to move to grid to sweep area and spotted 3 VC with packs and weapons evading to the west at BS704439. The 3rd Platoon engaged with small arms fire and called in a Fire Mission at grid BS644435. Bravo Company heard sniper fire coming from this grid firing adjusted artillery into vicinity grid at BS694435 and will search at first light. At 1957hrs Bravo Company Command Post with 3rd Platoon in Night Defense Position at BS716434, 2nd Platoon is moving to Night Defense Position at BS727448 with 3rd Platoon ambush to BS713428, 1st Platoon ambush at BS729450. At 2048hrs Bravo Company Command Post vicinity BS715425 had movement to the south 100 meters, requested illumination, the scout dog with then did alert, Illumination fired with negative sighting, will check at first light.
Charlie Company

Charlie Company continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0615hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon is moving to Patrol Base at BS657543, 1st Platoon ambush closed to BS660545. At 2015hrs Charlie Company Command Post and 2nd Platoon vicinity of BS631563 responding to a call from 3-1 Infantry that 20 VC were moving their way set up a L shaped ambush. Command Post and 2nd Platoon heard movement 100-200 meters to the east, and engaged the area with Artillery, will check area at 1st light. At 2213hrs Charlie Company spotted confirmed movement 5-7 personnel. At 2340hrs Charlie company 2nd Platoon Night Defense Position is at BS638561, 2nd Platoon ambush 200 meters west and have 3 Mechanical Ambush out.
Delta Company

Delta Company used Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0705hrs Delta Company all elements in their Patrol Bases, Command Post, 3rd, and 4th Platoons is at 728489, 1st Platoon is at BS696524 and 2nd Platoon is at BS728477. At 1228hrs Delta Company Command post had a male, 11 bring a 105mm round to their Patrol Base vicinity BS728489, was old and rusty they paid 2 C Ration meals and it was blew it in place. At 1324hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon while in Patrol Base BS696524 bought 2 booby traps, one being a baseball frag with trip wire and other an unknown type of bomb fragments with a pressure release device. Delta Company paid 2 C Ration meals to 2 Coke kids, 7-9, both booby trap were blown in place. At 1835hrs Delta Company found 1 105mm round about 50 meters outside of their Patrol Base vicinity BS696524. The 105 very rusty and very old, no number area visible, will be blown in place. At 2003hrs Delta Company all elements in their Night Defense Position, Command Post, 3rd and 4th Platoons at BS718505, 1st Platoon at BS697525 and 2nd Platoon at BS724476. At 2030hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon Kit Carson Scout spotted 5 VC/NVA with packs approximately 150meters to their east and moving east. Delta Company called in Fire Mission didn’t check out area because of Mechanical Ambush in vicinity will check out in morning Delta Company has 3 Mechanical ambush out. PFC Glenn J. Mayne was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital (see Headquarters Company).
Echo Company

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry.
