Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0850hrs Charlie Company 26 Engineer and Delta 71 our work location is at BS743612. At 0935hrs South OP LZ Liz we requests an Urgent Dust Off for 3 US who hit a booby trap, 81mm mortar round on a trail leading from South OP to Liz at BS753427. It was a trip wire device and 3’ above the ground. Names SP4 Herman Moore was WIA/DOA, SGT Galvin Headquarters and Headquarter Battery WIA, SP4 Hans Rajcevac Bravo Company and additional US from artillery was injured but no evac, Dust Off completed at 0945hrs. At 1300hrs S2 we have 2 Chieu Hoi, 1 AK50, 3 M-26 grenades, 1 Chi Com grenade, 1 homemade grenade and a total of 14 people to be extracted at BS754570. 1 Chieu Hoi was propaganda Cadre and the other was a tax collector and his family. At 1745hrs Charlie Company 26 Engineer reports a total of 27 hours were worked clearing 17 acres at BS744612 to BS739612 (100X700) with 2 bunkers destroyed, 5 fighting positions destroyed. Also 3 macheral cans with explosive and smoke grenade fuses discover at BS741611 and 1 M-26 grenade fuses discover at BS741611 and 1 (M-26) grenade with trip wire at BS742612 and 2 105 rounds along with 150 pounds of rice uncover by the dossier (rice was found in plastic and sandbags) and all was destroyed and several documents were found and evac. 5 D7 are operational with both CEV still deadline. At 1820hrs S-5 Report in the 1-20 TAOR leaflet drops were made at BS7745, BS7448 and BS7459 with a total of 84000 leaflets distributed with a VIP them. At BS7263 37000 leaflets were targeted against the enemy C19 Unit Charlie Company had a total VIP turn in of 4,620 Vietnamese dollars very successful. On 21 June 70, Charlie Company had a Chieu Hoi come into their location and he was evac back to LZ Bronco for interrogation utilization for PSYOPS purposes. Brigade S-5 made a tape for night psychological operations and for more Chieu Hoi. On 22 June 1970 2 more Chieu Hoi with an AK50, 3 M-26 hand frag, 2 Chi com frag grenades turned themselves in. 1 was later evac to LZ Bronco and the other is still working with the American forces to find the location of further enemy forces. Headquarters Battery Division Artillery reports SGT Fred Galvan was evac to 91 Evac with multiple frag wounds chest and abdomen also SP4 Kenneth W. Baker with frag wound to left arms treated at B 23 Medical. Bravo Company reports SP4 HERMAN MOORE JR LISTED AS KIA DOA.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
June 22, 1970

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz and Access Road. At 0935hrs the South OP we requests an Urgent Dust Off for three US. Who hit a booby trap 81mm round on the trail leading from the South OP to Liz at BS753427. It was a trip wire device and 3feet above the ground. Names SP Herman Moore was WIA/DOA, SP4 Hans Rajacevac, Bravo Company An addition 2 US from Artillery was WIA I Evac and 1 not evacuated complete at 0945hrs. At 2016hrs Alpha Company reports the 23, 73, 93 elements are in location on Access Road.

 

Bravo Company
June 22, 1970

At 0935hrs South OP we request an urgent Dust Off for 3 US who hit a booby trap 81mm round on trail leading from the South OP to Liz at BS753427. It was a trip wire device 3 feet above the ground. Names SP4 Herman Moore, was WIA/DOA, Sgt Calvin HHB Arty WIA, SP4 Hans Rajcevac Bravo Company, and addition US from Artillery who was not Dust Off completed at 0945hrs. At 1127hrs Bravo Company the 21 element found a rocket at grid BS832435, serial #XM235, Date 10-69, blend BS8384, the 73 element also found a L shaped bunker 6 X4 X 10 at BS834435also one camouflaged sampan at BS834435 100 meters from the beach. At 1745hrs the 91 element found 2 antipersonnel mines booby trap they destroyed in place. SP4 HERMAN MOORE JR LISTED AS KHA. Bravo Company reports that SP4 HANS ANTHOY RAJCEVAC (SEE JULY 12, 1970) and Headquarters Battery Division Artillery reports SGT Fred Galvan was evac to 91 Evac with multiple frag wounds chest and abdomen also SP4 Kenneth W. Baker with frag wound to left arms treated and released at B 23 Medical.

 

Charlie Company
June 22, 1970

Charlie Company the 23 and 24 elements closed on Night Defense Position and 22 is closing at 0705hrs. Charlie Company will use roving patrols along with day ambushes in their Area of Operation today. At 0724hrs Charlie Company the 24 element engaged 1 VC in a green uniform with a weapon at BS746465. He was evading to a village at 800 meters. We engaged with small arms fire and checked out the Ville with negative finding. At 1044hrs Charlie Company the 23 roving patrol will be BS730447 to BS720438 to BS720430 to BS730430, the 24 roving patrol from BS750470 to BS750460 to BS730460 to BS740470 and the 25 roving patrol from BS746450 to BS756437 to BS746437. At 1130hrs Charlie Company scout dog alerted an 81mm booby trap, trip wire device across a trail at BS729469 was destroyed in place. At 1550hrs Charlie Company had a VIP program at BS746455 and a large amount of ammo was turned in. At 1615hrs Charlie Company intelligence report at BS757464 the Vietnamese report 2 VC kidnapped a Vietnamese female and brought her to the mountains. One NVA seem dressed as an ARVN. At 1620hrs Charlie Company intelligence a report states the VC go to the mountains when Charlie Company arrives and come back down when they leave. At 1745hrs Charlie Company we requests a routine Dust Off for a Vietnamese child with a shot in leg which is infected it is unknown how wound was received, completed at 1815hrs grid BS746455. At 1850hrs ambushes by 31 elements will be BS705441 for 71 at BS704440 and BS705438 (mechanical ambushes). At 1910hrs we are moving to the Night Defense Position at BS743438. At 1945hrs we request an urgent Dust Off for one US with a temp 105 and vomiting completed 2005hrs at grid BS744443. Charlie Company are in our Night Defense Position is at BS743438. The 24, 23, 25 elements are in their location for their Recon patrols. At 2215hrs Charlie Company we request 6 cases of claymores to this location by LOH tomorrow to replace the ones of the mechanical ambush. 6 rolls of trip wire, 6 cases of claymore are to be on the Bud Pad not later than 0900hrs on 23 June 1970 the Charlie Company rear was informed.

 

Delta Company
June 22, 1970

At 0740hrs Delta Company we have set up in a temporary Day Logger at BS732646. At 0850hrs Charlie Company 26 Engineer and Delta 71 our work location is at BS743612. At 1210hrs Delta Company 71 element at grid BS740613 we found documents in a can in a wooded area at the base of a hill. Just before some rice paddies, a dossier uncover them, they were evac to LZ Liz. At 1524hrs Delta Company we are moving to M-26 location. At 1740hrs Delta Company we request a Urgent Dust Off for one PF (159) and 2 civilians with gunshot wounds resulting from VC initiated action completed at 1753hrs vicinity BS742665. At 1957hrs 23 is moving to their snake location and spotted 2 VC/NVA to their southwest at approximately 250 meters form BS745655, we engaged with small arms fire with negative return fire. The 2 VC/NVA were carrying packs and didn’t spot any weapons. We call for illumination to check the area and found blood trails leading to a stream and will check out the area at first light. At 2155hrs Delta Company rear was informed that 71 elements need 12 WP rounds of 81mm rather then 12 HE rounds of 81mm as ordered previously.

 

Echo Company
June 22, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 4.2 Platoon reports Fire Mission 10 for a total expended of 92 HE and 18 Illumination. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0645hrs Recon Platoon all snakes have closed on their Day Logger at BS754571. At 0706hrs Recon Platoon at approximately 0640rhs at BS751571 the Vietnamese spotted 3 VC/NVA evading east of BS754571 about 300 meters away. They were wearing blue-green uniforms. 1 had a pack but we could see no weapons, we engaged them with small arms fire resulting in 1 VC/NVA KIA, a male 25 with no ID. At 1530hrs a Vietnamese female told the Kit Carson Scout that the US killed 3 VC yesterday. The VC where buried by the VC and 1 had a pistol. At 1905hrs the 23 element with the female found and dug up the graves at BS753576 and found 3 VC males KIA wearing all back. At 1700hrs Recon Platoon we are moving to BS747564. At 1742hrs Recon Platoon we request an urgent Dust Off for 1 US with a gunshot wound of the leg. While moving out to their Day Logger they received 6 rounds of automatic sniper fire from 150 meters to the northwest resulting in 1 US WIA, line #4848, Kennedy Dust Off from BS758566 completed at 1645hrs. The 21 element spotted the 1 VC with a green uniform and weapon and engaged at 400 meters with negative result. The Dust Off ship took sniper fire, AK47 from 600 meters to the south of the LZ with negative hits. At 1845hrs Recon Platoon we request a routine Dust Off for 1 VC nurse with a gun shot wound of the knee at BS750580. The female was carrying a pack and was engaged at 500 meters. The pack contained medical supplies and 1 Chi Com, and we will evac the pack to LZ Liz, Dust Off completed at 1848hrs. At 1845hrs the 21 element engaged 1 VC male at 50 meters wearing a blue top and black bottoms at grid BS755564. The results are 1 VC KIA, approximately 25 years of age and 1 45 Caliber pistol CIA (SN13473359). Also we had some documents CIA, we picked up 1 VC female age 30 wearing a black outfit and was with the male KIA. She also was carrying document, which will be evac to Military Intelligence in the morning. SP4 Rodney L. Kennedy was evac to 91st Evac Hospital (11B20) with gunshot wound to right leg.
