Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0030hrs LZ Liz Radar sighted 5 to 6 personnel moving north at grid BS75884536, we engaged with 6 HE round of 4.2 mortar. At 0125hrs Radar sighted 10 to 15 personnel with vehicles at grid BS78464595, we engaged with 4.2 mortar and 105 artillery rounds. At 0207hrs Radar sighted 2 to 3 personnel, stationary at grid BS757448, negative clearance was given and at 0455hrs Radar sighted 4 to stationary personnel at grid BS805441, we engaged with 5 HE rounds of artillery 105mm. At 0505hrs Radar sighted 4 to 6 stationary personnel at grid BS800460, we engaged the target with 12 HE of 105 artillery. At 1100hrs Brigade Commander arrived at LZ Liz, was briefed and left at 1210hrs. At 1140hrs the Battalion Commander left LZ Liz on a Visual Recon and arrived at 1210hrs. At 1155hrs Warlord Lead spotted 3 NVA in green uniforms hiding in a hole at grid BS742367. At 1200hrs Warlord received fire from grid BS742367 and now engaging the target area. At 1301hrs Brigade we request an Area of Operation extension from BS745380 to BS760380 to BS760350 to BS750350. Effective until DATE/TIME 251200 January 1970 with purpose is to check the area where the Warlord received fire. At 1315hrs 1-20 Infantry the Assistant Division Commander arrived at LZ Liz, was briefed, and left at 1327hrs. At 1650hrs Helix 38 we spotted the following at these grids, at BS747404 we spotted a tunnel and bunker complex covered with wood and trees. At BS748406 we spotted a stable bridge, about 2 to 3’ wide, which looks like a main transport for people, at grid BS752378 we spotted 5 mounds of dirt, fresh. At BS748378 we spotted a bunker 5 to 10 meters long, we fired 8" artillery into the grids BS747404 and BS748406 and destroyed the bridge, 2 bunkers and 1 tunnel entrance collapsed. At 1923hrs Radar sighted 4 to 5 stationary personnel and the 2nd report was 12 to 15 personnel at grid BS734436 and we fired 11 HE and 1 firecracker round of 155 artillery. At 2110hrs Radar sighted 1 to 2 sampans at grid BS777496 and we engaged them with 155 artillery. At 2130hrs LZ Liz Radar sighted 5 to 6 stationary personnel at grid BS761447 and negative clearance was given. At 2155hrs Radar sighted 6 to 7 personnel, stationary at grid BS750447, negative clearance due to the proximity of friendly, at 2320hrs Radar sighted 4 to 5 personnel, stationary at grid BS810423, we engaged with 4 firecracker rounds of Artillery 155mm.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company
January 22, 1970
Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0655hrs Alpha Company the 74 element snake is closed on LZ Liz. At 0824hrs Alpha Company all snakes have closed on LZ Liz. At 1920hrs Alpha Company the 37 element is moving to BS750442, the 36 element is moving to BS768440 and the 75 element is moving to BS775442 and the 24 element is in location at BS764436. At 1950hrs Alpha Company reports the 37 snake is at BS750442, the 36 snake at BS768440 and the 75 snake is at BS775442. At 2112hrs Alpha Company the 37 element is in their snake location at BS754448.
Bravo Company

At 0612hrs Bravo Company the 33 element is closing on BS778445 and 24 is closing on BS783438. At 0737hrs Bravo Company conducts a Combat Assault of the 22 element PZ at BS783433 and LZ were at BS815433. BS818437, and BS830428, completed at 0736hrs. At 0934hrs Bravo Company the 26 element has picked up 1 male VC at grid BS804448, 45 years old and dressed in black, he had no ID. The Man had a flag with him all red, which the PF say is an NVA Youth Association flag. The PF questioned to VC and he led the 26 element and the PF to tunnel with 2 VC inside at grid BS807444. The 26 element tried to talk the VC out of the tunnel with negative result we blew the tunnel resulting in 2 VC KIA in the tunnel. They found a medical supply and documents as well. At grid BS811433 the 26 element pick up one female VC age 25, who was dressed in black, the VC female is a member of the VC guerrillas. At 1000hrs the 72 element found a (750 pounds) bomb at grid BS810432, we blew it in place. At 1053hrs Bravo Company the 72 has closed on the South Bridge. At 1850hrs Bravo Company the 35 element has moved out on their clearing patrol to BS777453. At 1940hrs Bravo Company received a intelligence report from the Vietnamese at the North Bridge reveals there are 206 VC at grid BS773469. At 1945hrs the 37 element is moving to BS769451 and at 1957hrs Bravo 25 is moving to BS787429. At 2045hrs Bravo Company the 37 element is at BS769451 and the 35 element is at BS787429. The 35 element has closed on BS776446 and the 76 element is moving to BS792410. The 75 element is having trouble with their radio. At 2105hrs the 37 element spotted 5 to 6 personnel moving to the southwest on the Red Ball and we engaged them a few small arms fire with negative results. At 2205hrs Bravo Company plans for tomorrow include the 26 element providing security for the VIP at grid BS785438.
Charlie Company

At 0710hrs Charlie Company all snakes have closed on BS701453 and at 0905hrs Charlie Company we are moving to BS716445. At 1055hrs Charlie Company our present location is at BS716445. At 1010hrs Charlie Company 22 element we request Urgent Dust Off for PF with multiple frag wounds to he body when he hit a booby trap completed at 1030hrs grid BS773534. At 1140hrs Charlie Company our Day Logger is at BS728447. At 1240hrs Charlie Company reports our Night Defense is at BS726447, the 34 snake will be at BS725435, the 76 snake will be at BS734448, and the 74 snake will be at BS720450. At 1835hrs Charlie Company we are leaving our Night Defense Position and moving to our Night Defense Position. At 1930hrs Charlie Company the 39 snake is at BS721439, the 76 snake is at BS734448, and the 74 element is at BS720450 with the Night Defense Position at BS773447. At 2003hrs the 34 element was moving to their snake location and they spotted three (VC/NVA) coming toward them from northwest, they started to evade and the 34 element engaged with small arms, we found 2 poles mad of aluminum from a 500 pound bomb, negative casualties and we will check out the area again at first light grid BS764463. At 2047hrs Charlie Company 76 element was moving to their snake location and when they were about 100 to 150 meters from their destination they spotted one VC/NVA which they engaged with small arms, we have one possible KIA and will check out the area at first light.
Delta Company

Delta Company is using multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0645hrs Delta Company reports all snakes have closed. At 0754hrs Delta Company AMC Dolphin 6, picked up 2 Vietnamese detainees, 1 15 to 18 years of age and the other 40 years of age. They were dressed in blue shirts and black pants. The 40 year old, male was dressed in all black, negative ID at grid BS808444. At 0910hrs Delta Company the 22, 32 and 72 elements are moving out to BS7736, BS7836 and BS7837. At 1224hrs Delta Company the 72 element has closed on BS768370. At 1407hrs Delta Company reports all elements have closed on BS767370. At 1740hrs Delta Company all elements have left their Day Logger for respective Night Defense Position, Delta Company at BS772386 and the 71, 12 and 52 elements are at BS764369. At 1954hrs Delta Company the 74 snake is at BS768370 the 24 element is at BS766389.
Echo Company

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0620hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Supporting Fires 5, Observed Mission 4 for a total of 31 HE and 14 Illumination rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0815hrs Recon Will Scarlet is moving out on a short patrol. At 1518hrs Recon we have closed on LZ Liz.
