Headquarters and Headquarter Company
February 22, 1968

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Thunder and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0210hrs VC withdrew from Duc Pho estimate 2 squads VC entered village, burned 2 huts, 3 cows killed, no casualties reported. At 0310hrs (late entry) 1-20 Infantry LZ Thunder had approximately 100 rounds of automatic weapons fired on their position returned fire with no casualties.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 0055hrs Bunkers 36 through 41 with the use of a starlight scope spotted 5-6 personnel moving from south to north at BS815374. The Bunkers engaged this target and when they opened fire quite a bit of firing broke out in the southeast portion of the village of Duc Pho. The PF engaged VC down in town and there were several large explosions. MACV called for continuous illumination over their compound and we fired 91 rounds of illumination in support of them. E Troop was alerted as a possible reaction force and the S-3 was notified. Bunker 24 observed approximately 10 VC moving on the northern end of town and took them under fire. They fled to the northeast. The PF dispatched a squad in pursuit of these VC. MACV called artillery on BS806366 and BS814354. Dai Di fired his mortars. MACV felt the VC from the south came from BS813354. They felt there was 2 VC squads involved. At 0156hrs MACV VC moved down near Chief of Village house and others. Now at 812374 engaged them with 50caliber fire. At 0705hrs 81 mortars fired 102 rounds 91 in support of MACV. At 1848hrs E Troop at 1800hrs Bridges 102-103, 2 jeeps at BS881278 received sniper fire with negative casualties. At 1955hrs APC on Bridge to Carentan receiving sniper fire from the south, returned fire with negative results. At 2220hrs bunkers 37-39 received heavy volume of sniper fire from the south, returned fire with negative results.

 

Alpha Company
February 22, 1968

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Thunder. At 0640hrs Alpha Company ambush in the morning engaged unknown size enemy force with the results of 2 VC KIA and 2 AK 44 captured serial numbers h 9645, j 2576 and 1 M-1 # 833058. Alpha Company continued the sweeping the contact area and detained 3 VCS and captured some documents and 1 Chi Com hand grenade also located 1 VC WIA with weapon M-1 carbine 1101590. At 0900hrs Alpha Company also found 2 pistol belts with first aid pouches, 2 magazines M-1 ammo, 2 M-26 Hand grenades, and 1 US bayonet. At 1130hrs Alpha Company reports their location at BS834298. At 1430hrs Alpha Company continue to reports items found 2 VC ponchos, 1 hammock, Vietnamese cigarettes, 5 carbine magazines, 55 rounds of 7.62 Russian ammo, 26 M-1 round. At 2135hrs Alpha Company has moved into their Night Defense Position at BS828308 with ambushes at BS826320, BS830315, BS831304 and BS828302.

 

Bravo Company
February 22, 1968

At 1130hrs Bravo Company is at BS728363 and using a Recon in Force to BS745371 when Bravo Company 2nd Platoon at 1250hrs engaged 1 VC with weapon results 1 weapon CIA searching for body, CIA 1 French bolt action SN 68907. At 1430hrs Bravo Company BS746365 detained 4 VCS, 2 woman and 2 children, 1 didn’t have ID will question. At 1815hrs Bravo Company 1 man fall downhill possible broken ankle, Dust Off completed at 1927hrs. Bravo Company 10 and 20 is located at BS732392 with ambush at grid BS743365, Bravo Company Night Defense Position is at BS742372 with ambushes at BS742372, BS747365, BS982352, BS732392 and BS743385.

 

Charlie Company
February 22, 1968

At 0900hrs Charlie Company at BS702895 and Charlie Company at 0820hrs at BS706893 found many Punji pits destroyed them as best we can. At 1058hrs Charlie Company at grid BS724895found 1 M-72 Law which was armed also at 1100hrs Charlie Company found 1 M-16 magazine full, and 100 rounds of M-16 ammo, firing charts for 81mm mortar, 1 12 gage shot gun shell, documents, will burn down huts in area. At 1815hrs Charlie Company is in their Night Defense Position at BS699899 with ambushes at BS708892 and BS693890.

 

Delta Company
February 22, 1968

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Thunder. Delta Company will also run patrols and their Search and Destroy operations from LZ Thunder. At 2135hrs Delta Company reports their night ambushes at BS732392 and BS743365.

 

Echo Company
February 22, 1968

Echo Company and 4.2 platoon where located on LZ Thunder to provide direct support to the Battalion. At 1130hrs Recon Platoon reports their location at BS844320. At 1655hrs Recon at BS841278, picked up a Vietnamese child who had waved off the VC.
