Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 22, 1968

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Thunder and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 1145hrs MACV Duc Pho reported 3 Battalions of VC at BS894255, BS895238, their mission is to ambush convoy and burn Bridge 104 and US troops in SA Huynh. MACV requests Artillery to be fired on both these location. Message Center to 1-20 Infantry continued normal mission remains near PZ in case pick up become necessary, prepare to assume present 3-1 Infantry Area of Operations. At 1830hrs 1-20 Infantry SRRP Loner is at BS792357 and SRRP Silent is at BS877287. At 1925hrs 1-20 Infantry requests that MACV does not send ambushed to their locations BS805351, BS806350 and BS802347 because 1-20 Infantry will have a squad of SRRP in their area, approved by MACV.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 1750hrs Late Entry 4-3 Infantry Rear, A 4-3 Infantry at BS776450, a ¼ ton truck was returning to Duc Pho from Chu Lai when they were ambushed, received approximately 150-200 rounds of small arms fire, negative casualties and returned fire with negative assessment.

 

Alpha Company
August 22, 1968

At 0900hrs Alpha Company at BS781386 found 11 M-14 expended casing and 10 30cal casing. At 1010hrs Alpha Company location locations A10 at BS785400, A 20 and command post at BS780402 and A 30 at BS784405. Alpha Company is at BS782406, found 2 old Punji pits discovered in the same area found 1 claymore mine. Alpha Company at 1401hrs locations is A 10 BS785401, Alpha Company (-) no change, and A 30 at BS786407. At 1710hrs Alpha company at BS786404, found 1 M-18 rifle #822110 with 7 magazines with ammo and one bandoleer of 7.62 ammo also 1 M-1 carbine with 1 magazine loaded, 1 NVA uniform and 7 round of M-79 ammo. At 1830hrs Alpha Company is moving into their Night Defense Position at BS780401 with ambushes at 31 BS768405, 31A BS772410, 32 BS784409, 32A BS781395, 33 BS777392 and 33A BS773387. At 2005hrs Alpha Company at BS786404 spotted 2 flashing lights, will grenade area, it was the same Location as that of weapon found this afternoon.

 

Bravo Company
August 22, 1968

At 0742hrs Bravo Company at BS908137 found 4 booby traps, one of the 4 was a claymore, all destroyed, they’re in the same area of the booby trap last night. At 1010hrs Bravo Company (-) at BS807302, 20 is at BS814308 with 30 at BS801299. At 1730hrs Message center sent to 1-20 Infantry continued normal mission remain near PZ in case pick up becomes necessary. Prepare to assume present 3-1 Area of Operation as discussed with Battalion Commander. At 1830hrs Bravo Company reports their locations in their Night Defense Position at BS801299, with ambushes at 10 BS792287, 11 BS798283, 12 BS797294, 20 BS907302, 21 BS797301 and 11 BS797294.

 

Charlie Company
August 22, 1968

Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Thunder. At 1010hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC reports Charlie Company 10 is moving to vicinity BS876313, Charlie (-) on LZ Thunder with Charlie 31 at BS884275, 33 at BS808296 and 32 on bridge 111. At 1830hrs Charlie Company reports their night locations Charlie Company (-) at LZ Thunder, Charlie 11 at BS874309, SRRP Loner at BS792357 and SRRP Silent at BS877287. At 2040hrs Charlie Company at BS895330 OP on LZ Thunder observed light in water and light on beach appeared they were signaling one another swift boats are checking at this time.

 

Delta Company
August 22, 1968

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Charlie Brown and at 1000hrs Delta Company locations 10 at BS908199, 13 at BS908197, Delta Company (-) at LZ Charlie Brown, 30 at BS925175 and 22 at Bridge 94. At 1030hrs at BS908197, while questioning Villagers about booby trap a Vietnamese woman in Village told Delta Company that 10 VC were in the area 6 days ago, and told the people to stay out of the area to the southeast. They were armed with AK47, AK 44 and one M-16. The woman was brought in for further questioning. At 1040hrs Delta Company at BS908195 found 2 Punji pits 1 ½’ deep one had trip wire leading from it to a 105 round booby trap made diagram of booby trap and blew it in place. At 1153hrs Delta Company 30 is at LZ Charlie Brown, 20 is at BS919167 with Delta 23 at OP BS917164. At 1853hrs Delta Company locations 20 BS873264, 23 at BS866258, 25 at BS877272 and the 30 with command.

 

Echo Company
August 22, 1968

Echo Company is located at LZ Thunder where Battalion Forward is and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and Base Defense elements on LZ Thunder. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Thunder where they continue to provide direct fire support for the (1-20 Infantry Battalion). At 1023hrs Recon Platoon 1-20 Infantry and 3-1 Infantry spotted 3 VC at BS336667 spotted 3 VC moving east along trail, 2 had weapons fired on them, negative hit, they ran into a tree line and headed south Recon moving to check area at this time. At 1235hrs Recon Platoon 1-20 Infantry and 3-1 Infantry reports their location at BS323674. At 1500hrs Recon Platoon 1-20 and 3-1 Infantry at BS327682 engaged 1 VC in khaki short sleeve shirt carrying M-1 carbine wounded him and he evaded south west followed blood trail but lost him. A 2nd VC in PJ with a Bar headed northeast, Recon going west to accomplish mission. At 1725hrs Recon 1-20 and 3-1 Infantry Command Post is at BS323682, 1 element section at high ground at BS321678, 1 ambush at 325678 will be back in at 1830hrs. Tomorrow will have 2 patrols 1 at BS316680 and other at BS322687. At 1850hrs 1-20 Recon at BS323682 received 5 small arms fire from 150 meters northwest, returned fire, negative assessment.
