Headquarters and Headquarter Company
May 21, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0450hrs LZ Liz Checked Bunkers # 14, 15, 16, 17, all were OK, no perimeter lights on this side of hill. At 0810hrs LZ Liz Access Road is now clear. At 0915hrs LZ Liz Access Road reports a 5 Ton Truck turned over on the Access Road. Have 2 US WIA, 1 PSDF KIA. Vehicle was from the Charlie Battery 1-82 Artillery, was heading east and lost control, Bird # 59, completed at 0925hrs. At 1137hrs MACV Mo Duc PF 162 requests Urgent Off for 2 PF who hit mine, multiply frag wounds to bodies, negative Vietnamese Air Force pick up WJB, reason: Negative commo with Da Nang, completed at 1158hrs. At 1820hrs MACV Duc Pho vicinity, ¾ ton vehicle ambushed by a squad of VC with 1 machinegun, engaged with Artillery 155m and small arms fire, results were 2 RF WIA. At 1921hrs Saber 40 is on station to work Box 63, at BS808405 observed 1 camouflage hootch with numerous black pajamas hanging outside. At BS765403 observed 1 VC/NVA evade into bushes from a trail was wearing black on black and carrying some type of object, Saber 40 did engage this pack. At grids BS760403 and BS805406, observed 1 camouflaged hooch and bunker with cooking utensils, Saber 40 was cleared to engage all grids at Duc Pho by CLO Saber 40 broke station at 2005hrs to refuel. At 1930hrs Alpha Company reports all bunkers have been inspected by LT Waugh, everything was satisfactory. At 2059hrs Saber 40 is on station in Box 63 for recheck. At 2115hrs received small arms fire from grid BS800407 from 4 bunkers, 2 hooch’s located in a wood line (CLO) engaged area with unknown results. At BS811405 observed bunkers and mud type hooch’s with wooden crates outside, received small arms from 4 different positions in this area. Saber 40 going into Nighthawk Box 61 at 2205hrs, negative findings in Box, breaking station at 2225hrs. Did not engage the following at BS805406 structure 25’ X 10’ clothing and bunker, BS798415 structure and clothing and bunker, BS796408 structure and bunkers, entire area well cultivated with many trails. At 2103hrs Alpha Company Bunker line has negative Sit Rep, LT Waugh checked bunkers 1, 2 and 4 all satisfactory. At 2117hrs 1-20 Infantry Mechanical Ambushes out: Bravo 6, Charlie 3 and Delta 6 for a total of 15 out. At 2220hrs TO Brigade S-3 FROM 1-20 Infantry S-3: support utilizing 3 5Ton Bridge jacks to raise overhead cover on mortar ammo storage bunker at Nui Von. Plan to raise roof to insert uprights to support roof, confirm. At 2220hrs TO Brigade From the 1-20 Infantry S-3: request 3 hours LOH time each day to confirm deny populated area in 1-20 Infantry Tactical Area of Operation. This requested time is in addition to normal Command and Control LOH time each day. This request may be terminated after population survey is initially made. At 2242hrs LZ Liz Access Road Bunker 2 vicinity BS762437 took approximately 10 rounds of fire from about 250 meters to north, returned fire, negative casualties. At 2314hrs Alpha Company bunker 5, 6, 7 and 8 are all in order checked by LT. Waugh. At 2315hrs LZ Liz Bunkers 3, 4, 16 and 17 were checked by CPT Ross all were satisfactory. Legend: 1st Platoon 34, 2nd Platoon 05, 3rd Platoon 89, 4th Platoon 78, CO-07.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
May 21, 1971

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0530hrs LZ Liz Bunkers Inspection # 13, 14, 15 and 16 all bunkers were satisfactory all had commo and knowledge of passwords. At 1930hrs all bunkers line been inspected by LT Waugh, everything was satisfactory. At 2242hrs LZ Liz Access Road bunker 2 vicinity BS762437 took sniper fire approximately 10 rounds from about 250 meters to north returned fire and report negative casualties.

 

Bravo Company
May 21, 1971

Bravo Company continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operations. At 0950hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon patrol is at BS705439 and sighted 3 personnel with packs and weapons, engaged with small arms fire and M-79, 1 dressed in black, 2 dressed in green, 1 had a M-16, 1 SKS and 1 had a AK47. Bravo checked area and found many footprints and a campfire of recent use with negative blood trails. At 1935hrs Bravo Company 1st and 4th Platoon is moving out to Night Defense Position at BS723451, Bravo Company Command Post requests a Urgent Dust Off vicinity BS714426 for 1 US with multiple frag wounds to legs, he had set out claymore in the Night Defense Position went off as he was walking away he hit by a back blast, don’t know what caused claymore to go off Line # P8225 Polise, David W. Bird # 88 completed Dust Off at 1955hrs At 2010hrs Bravo Company all in Night Defense Position 1st and 4th Platoon is at BS723451, 2nd Platoon is at BS720437, 1st Platoon ambush at BS724448 and the Command Post with 3rd Platoon is at BS717427 with 6 Mechanical ambushes out. Bravo Company reports SGT David W. Polise was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Charlie Company
May 21, 1971

Charlie Company continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. Check date. At 1700hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon requests 1 priority Dust Off for 1 pack with self inflected wound to hand caused by M-79, vicinity BS661544, line # 259, Hess, Dennis W. Bird # 59 completed at 1735hrs. The man was accidently shot him self will cleaning his XM203 and the M-79 discharger and hit him in hand. At 1906hrs Charlie Company reports all patrols have closed for today. At 1920hrs Charlie Company reports Command Post and 2nd Platoon at BS643557. At 1947hrs Charlie Company reports 1st Platoon in their Night Defense Position at BS663548 with ambush at BS721500.

 

Delta Company
May 21, 1971

Delta Company used Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0653hrs Delta Company 3rd, 4th Platoons and Command Post in their Patrol Base at BS723498. At 0658hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon is in their Patrol Base at BS726486. At 2005hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon in their Night Defense Position, Command Post, 3rd and 4th Platoon at BS721500, and 2nd Platoon at BS729478 with 6 Mechanical out.

 

Echo Company
May 21, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry.
