Headquarters and Headquarter Company

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with the ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0230hrs 1-20 Infantry LZ Liz received approximately 20 rounds 82mm mortar rounds (CS) and approximately 10-15 rounds 82mm mortar rounds HE, also many where duds, results 2 WIA (M). At 0130hrs Alpha Company reports Bridge 402U under heavy ground attack received RPG rounds, satchel charges and small arms and automatic weapons fire, guns ships from Division on station, flare ships and Shadow engaged area. At 0255hrs Alpha Company from LZ Liz conducted Combat Assault of 12 solders to aid and secure Bridge 402U LZ was hot. Results of encounter, 5 US KIA, two were found hung in tree, 1 US WIA, Evac, also 6NVA KIA, 2 AK-47, 2 AK50 CIA 5 AK 47 magazines with ammo destroyed. At 1000hrs LZ Liz report 1 bulldozer for 4 days to knock down hedge rows bunkers and banker around LZ Liz.

Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. LZ Bronco received 9-10 rounds 75mm recoilless rifle, results 3-helicopter total loss, 4 maintenance tents destroyed, 1 Shark minor damage, 1 briefing room damaged 2 (US) minor damaged, 1 briefing room damaged, 2 US WIA (M) from Bravo Company and D Company with the 4-21 Infantry. At 1100hrs 1-20 request for 1 bull dozer for 4 days to known down hedge rows and bunkers was turn down for other commitments resubmit again. At 2220hrs Late Entry: Base Defense called to verify Recon 1-20 Infantry location, checked with 1-20 Infantry TOC on LZ Liz and SGT Melborn, said Recon checked with Major Boozer and would not go out till later because of the rain. Late Entry Headquarters 6-11 Artillery at LZ Bronco received 4 rounds of 60mm mortar, negative damage and 3 US (M). At 2145hrs Base Defense requested flare ship mission at 0200hrs worked on base defense push, requested through 174th and approved, Base Defense notified that mission would go on as scheduled. I believe Medic for Alpha Company PFC Charles P. Payne was evac to the 27th Surgical Hospital with frag wounds to both hands and back of legs on the Bridge.

 

Alpha Company
May 21, 1969

At 0130hrs at BS771461 Bridge 402U under heavy ground attack, received RPG, satchel charges and small arms fire along with automatic weapons fire, gun ships from Division on station, flare ships and Shadow engaged area. At 0255hrs Alpha Company conducted a Combat Assault of 12 packs from Alpha Company to aid and secure bridge 402U, 5 US KHA, two were found hung in a tree and 2 WHA were evac. LZ was completed at 0255hrs and was hot, with the Results of encounter 6 NVA KIA and 2 AK 47, 2 AK50, and 8 AK 47 magazines full of ammo captured and US results 5 KHA and 2 WHA (E). At 0230hrs LZ Liz received approximately 20 rounds of 82mm mortar fire (CS) and approximately 10 to 15 rounds of 82mm HE, also many duds, results is 2 US WHA. Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. Alpha Company conducts Platoon size Recon in Force to vicinity BS775424 and screening the southern boundary of the 1st Battalion 4th ARVN Operations. Alpha Company conducts a1 Platoon Block vicinity BS7244 for the 1st Battalion 4th ARVN Regiment. CPL JOHN EDWARD LOGUE JR DIE OF WOUNDS, SGT CLARENEE SIZEMORE, SGT KENNETH DEAN SPENCER, CPL TIMOTHY RICHARD PTACEK, CPL JAMES SAM SCARMEAS JR. IS LISTED AS KHA. Alpha Company reports WHA PFC Charles P Payne Headquarters Company (medic) was Evac.

 

Bravo Company
May 21, 1969

Bravo Company conducts Platoon saturation patrolling vicinity BS773371, and conducts 1 Platoon Recon in Force to vicinity BS720425.

 

Charlie Company
May 21, 1969

Charlie Company with tracks secured BS800425 for engineers and conducts 1 Platoon Recon in Force to vicinity BS803408 and BS815403. Charlie Company continues their joint operation with 1 Platoon of PF to secure Pacification Program in their Area of Operation.

 

Delta Company
May 21, 1969

Delta Company conducts 1 platoon Recon in Force to grid BS782399 and BS797362.

 

Echo Company
May 21, 1969

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. At 0900hrs requested tracker dog team to go with Recon on sweep to find 75mm Recoilless Rifle. Tracker Team will meet Recon at Bunker #50. At 1200hrs Recon at BS818415 found 1 NVA canteen tool, 1 NVA canteen, 1 NVA packs and 500 pounds of rice destroyed. Recon move to BS816420 to set up night ambushes.
