Headquarters and Headquarter Company

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0410hrs 1-20 Infantry reports Radar at 2045hrs 6 to 8 stationary personnel were sighted at BS754463 with LZ Max informed and at 2245hrs 6 to 9 stationary personnel were sighted at BS813472 and engaged with 8 HE of Artillery 105. At 2330hrs 15 to 20 personnel were sighted moving south at BS808467 and engaged with 40 HE of Artillery 105. At 0755hrs Brigade to 1-20 Infantry when the ships left LZ Bronco this morning for the Combat Assault they received automatic weapons fire, with no damage. Brigade has notified base defense and Bravo Company was informed at 0830hrs grid at BS818405. At 1155hrs TMF sighted 3 personnel, moving northeast past string 75 at grid BS791386, metal was detected and engaged with 8 HE Artillery 105. At 1300hrs Helix spotted 8 personnel and 6 pack animals at BS792367 and moving northeast and at grid BS792467 we spotted 8 to 10 personnel. At 1425hrs Helix reports destroyed 2 structures at BS807446. At 1440hrs E Troop our locations are at BS745412, BS741396 and BS738404. At 1741hrs E Troop our present locations, is at BS742402, we have Delta 12 element with us and will call in our Night Defense Position later.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company
March 21, 1970
Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0654hrs Alpha Company 84 element has closed on LZ Liz and by 0900hrs all snakes have closed the access road is open. At 1350hrs Alpha Company personnel at Bunker 10 found a 250pound bomb, while digging a fighting trench. The numbers on bomb were still readable. The EOD team disarmed the bomb and will picked it up today by vehicle grid BS754432. At 2113hrs Alpha Company reports the 34 element is in their snake at BS749456.
Bravo Company
March 21, 1970
At 0720hrs Bravo Company Combat Assault of Bravo 32, 33, 34 elements 1st PZ and 2nd PZ at 0640hrs and 3rd PZ at 0655hrs 1st LZ and 2nd LZ at 0650hrs and 3rd LZ at 0700hrs. At 0740hrs the 32 element got 2 VC/NVA KIA who were evading, We have found no weapons but in checking the area we found one green and one brown uniform wrapped in plastic grid BS800460. They were wearing black pajamas when they were picked up 35to 40 years of age. At 1720hrs Bravo Company 17 element has found a tunnel at BS794446 on the riverbank. It was 3 X 3and was destroyed. At 2000hrs the 17 element found 6 fresh graves. We were unable to check them out because of the bomb blowing on the Gaza strip, we will check in morning. At 2100hrs Bravo Company the 64 element had one US Welch, fire a M-79 into a wood line at BS784477. There was a secondary explosion resulting in SGT Melvin B.Welch, getting a frag wound right leg, treated in the field.
Charlie Company
March 21, 1970
At 0851hrs Charlie Company all elements closed on BS719375 and by 0925hrs moving to grid BS708388. At 1140hrs Charlie Company 62 element at grid BS703371 we found 3 hootches made of tin and each of the hooch has a camouflaged bunker. The following items were found in the area 2 pair of wool socks, 3 M18 smoke grenades, 5-10 chickens and chicken house, 8 pigs, 2 bush hats, fresh vegetables, 2 bags of cloth, 12-18 fresh eggs, and sandbag of rice. Also found 6-7 rounds of AK, 4 Navy illumination casings, with time settings, several PRC batteries, BA 30 and BA 40 batteries. Along with many baskets, 1 M-79 frag, 4 homemade game traps, one poncho liner, 4 81mm plastic canisters, 1 machete, one cycle, 2 wooden 81mm ammo boxes, one M-16 magazine with 2 rounds and one orange parachute type flare. At 1300hrs the 62 and 32 elements are moving back to the Day Logger at BS711385. At 1500hrs Charlie Company the entire company closed on BS711385. At 1815hrs Charlie Company is moving into our Night Defense Position at BS726499 and the 14 element will snake at BS722403 and the 35 element will snake at BS729394.
Delta Company
March 21, 1970
At 0637hrs Delta Company we are moving to our Day logger at BS755395, the 62 to BS754398, 63 to BS754398, 64 to BS768406. Delta Company 12 we request a priority Dust Off for the H12 with minor frag wounds when he threw a hand frag into a hole and was too close and some frag flew out and hit him, completed at 0827hrs. At 0915hrs Delta Company 62 we found a tunnel at BS758400. At 1015hrs Delta Company 12 and E Troop is at BS726416 and Delta 12 and 3rd Platoon are at BS749411. At 1149hrs Delta Company 63 element has closed on BS762390. At 1348hrs Delta Company reports 62 element is at BS758400. At 1555hrs Delta Company 64 completely destroyed the tunnels at BS758400 and found a 250 pounds bomb was also destroyed. One tunnel was 4 ½ high, 3 in diameter and 100 meters long other was 4 ½ high and 3 in diameter and 70 meters long. At 1601hrs Delta Company the 62 is moving to BS754298, the 63 element is moving to BS761392 and the 64 element is still checking out BS758400. At 1800hrs Delta Company the 62, 69 and 19 elements are now moving to our Night Defense Position at BS758395 and closed at 1905hrs. At 1934hrs Delta Company reports the 21 element is at BS744400, the 15 element is at BS744405 and the 16 element is at BS741400.
Echo Company
March 21, 1970
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0610hrs 4.2 Platoon report Scheduled Fires 4 and Defense Targets 1 for a total expended of 5 HE, 2 WP and 20 Illumination. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. At 0744hrs Recon Platoon is moving out. At 0940hrs Recon Platoon reference the spot report of 201030 March 1970 at grid BS723472 the 32 element was moving back to their location found 1 VC/NVA KIA, male, 26 years old. He was in a cave and had been shot, with negative ID. At 0958hrs Recon Platoon 19 element is at BS725466 and the 32 element is moving to BS720472 and closed on location at 1002hrs. At 1240hrs Recon we are moving back to LZ Liz. Recon Platoon we have closed LZ LIZ. At 1530hrs Will Scarlet has one female detainee approximately 45 years old, dressed in black pajamas at BS742435. She was carrying rice and candied potatoes and moving to the northwest. We found another female detainee, age 18 to 19 who has papers but no ID. The Kit Carson Scout says they are VC. At 1600hrs Will Scarlet has closed on LZ Liz.
