Battalion Forward: 1-20 Infantry Battalion located on LZ Liz carrying out their Mission working with the ARVN units in their Duc Pho Area of Operations. Brigade S-2 reports from LZ Bronco and LZ Liz 2 Vietnamese males who were detained by Bravo Company 1-20 Infantry were investigated as follows: Vietnamese no wounded was Ngayen Khuc Trung, the Village Finance and Economics, in 1968 he was arrested and sent to Quang Ngai Jail, he escaped during the 1968 TET Offensive and was a VC District farmer cadre. The Male who was WIA was Nguyen Chin is Finance and Economics Hamlet Chief. In 1954 he went to North Vietnam when he came back he was Hamlet Chief (VC Cadre). At 0800hrs 2 Vietnamese females were detainees, one was daughter of Ngayen Khuc Trung, her name is Nayen Thi Non, she also a VC all above VC were at LZ Liz all the information was furnished voluntarily to interpreter of 1-20 Infantry.

Battalion Rear: Battalion continued their general support role for the Battalion and Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 0735hrs Charlie Company 19 Engineer at BS918202 while on mine sweep found 1 M-79 round (CS Type) next to access route to LZ Charlie Brown. At 0745hrs Bravo Company 19 Engineer at BS886280 found 3 M-79 rounds, 1 60mm Mortar round and destroyed items. At 1945hrs LZ Bronco 36-37 received small arms fire, returned fire with small arms fire and 81mm mortar. 10 Minutes later one unknown type of explosion approximately, requested to sweep area with 50 caliber or mortars, checking with artillery now.

 

Alpha Company
July 21, 1969

At 0635 Alpha Company we have begun our sweep and we have checked out BS753463, and only thing we found is a place where we think they make ID cards and now moving to Day Logger at BS757457. Alpha Company used saturation patrolling of their Area of Operations. At 1909hrs Alpha Company now at Night Defense Position at BS758438 and the 63 element moved out to a snake location.

 

Bravo Company
July 21, 1969

At 0430hrs Bravo Company report that they area moving out for a Cordon and Search operation all elements in position at 0550hrs. At 0622hrs we have 2 VCS, 1 was evading called for him to stop, he did not stop fired upon him resulting in stomach wound, he had a bag of grenades, wearing blue shirt and white shorts, approximately 25-30 years of age and the other VCS was found hiding in a hooch interrupter is questionings them at this time. At 0636hrs Bravo Company we are searching out area and have found a lot of articles. If a Dust Off is brought in for wounded VCS, he may live and possible give some valuable information need litter Dust Off completed at 0725hrs. At 0648hrs the 2nd VCS were hiding in the same hooch tried to evade he was 26 years old and is believed to be a VC Hamlet Chief. He is dressed in green (not fatigues) and was carrying a poncho, poncho liner, mosquito net, green fatigues, medical supplies, documents (All NVA equipment) personnel clothing, and a M-26 grenade. We will call if we get anything else. At 1710hrs Bravo Company at BS775427. We have 2 more VCS, one female 21 years old. In March 1968 she was arrested by the South Vietnamese government for being a leader of Woman VC association. She was released in May 1969. She was also found in the same hooch of 2 earlier VCS and we found the VC women Association, about 33 years old. At 1000hrs Bravo Company set up Day logger at BS784426 at BS784426 sweep area found 150 meters of spider holes, which were occupied, we believe, last night there were fresh believe, last night there were fresh tracks around the area. The holes extend 75 meters north and south from grid BS775428. The VC shot was Nguyen Chin he was finance and economic Hamlet chief. In 1954 went North Vietnam, came back, a member of VC Cadre. At 1825hrs Bravo Company Request priority Dust Off for 1 US, who has gone berserk (Brown), completed 1947hrs. At 1942hrs we are at out Night Defense Position at BS776440. At 2335hrs our element on the line spotted about 40 people on access road heading toward the Red Ball. Suggest that the South OP scrutinize the area with the big Starling scope. Charlie Company

Delta Company
July 21, 1969

At 0630hrs Delta all snakes closed and on the move to Day Logger at BS821446 where the 83 element will work to grid BS823443 and 63 will check out grid BS832436. The 86 element 0920hrs received 2 or 3 rounds of M-79 or 60mm fire called in Artillery again at 1000hrs with more fire probably 60mm mortar. All elements are back together at BS832439, which will be our Day logger. Results of sweep through will and south, spotted blood trail negative results. At 1845hrs Delta Company has moved to our Night Defense Position will be BS830443 at 2155hrs Delta snake is in the position.

 

Echo Company
July 21, 1969

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0710hrs 4.2 Platoon fired schedule 16 observed missions 1 Expend 32 HE and 2 WP. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. At 0625hrs Recon Platoon reports left their snake location and are sweeping northeast moving to LZ Bronco. At 0700hrs Recon reports their location at BS835377 their Day Logger. At 1910hrs Recon location is at BS841372, we have found an empty mortar pit, which is elevated toward LZ Bronco. In the area we found 2 dud mortar rounds and 3 that might be good (60mm). There were also bamboo aiming stakes, ammo boxes, and charges. Recon Platoon requested a EOD team in morning.
