Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0035hrs LZ Liz Radar sighted 10 to 15 personnel moving north from grid BS737458 and we engaged with 8" firecracker rounds from LZ Bronco. At 0718hrs 1-20 Infantry do not send names of personnel in the clear, use secure or line numbers. At 0818hrs 1-20 Infantry Brigade Commander arrived at LZ Liz, was brief by the Battalion Commander and left at 0825hrs. At 1047hrs Brigade Commander is at LZ Liz, was brief by the Battalion Commander and left at 1055hrs. At 1145hrs Battalion Commander left LZ Liz on a Visual Recon. At 1315hrs E Troop we have been moving into your Area of Operation. At 1500hrs E Troop our present location is at BS790485. At 1815hrs A Troop Calvary our present location is at BS788515. At 1928hrs Radar sighted 8 to 10 stationary personnel at BS7345, we engaged with 155 (2 Fire Cracker rounds. At 1952hrs Radar sighted 3 to 5 stationary personnel at grid BS716427, we engaged with 105 artillery 12 HE rounds. Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0728hrs Alpha Company reports the 93 element is checking out grid BS743422 and BS748448. At 0832hrs Alpha Company all snakes have closed on LZ Liz. At 1009hrs Alpha Company the 93 element has closed on LZ Liz with negative finding after checking out the radar targets of BS744437 and BS744422. At 1855hrs Alpha Company the 55 and 93 snakes have moved out to BS769441 and BS775442 respectively. At 1918hrs Alpha Company the 93 element is at BS775442 and the 53 element is at checkpoint 1 at BS763423. At 1947hrs Alpha Company the 55 snake is in position at BS769441. At 2013hrs Alpha Company reports the 85 element is at BS762437.
Bravo Company

At 0648hrs Bravo Company reports 55 and 56 snakes have closed on their semi permanent position and Bravo 84 closed on BS776446. Bravo Company conducted a Combat Assault from vicinity BS783433 to BS785510 1st LZ (at 0835hrs) and BS790510 Second LZ (at 0850hrs). At 1846hrs Bravo Company need a Urgent Dust Off for one VC 1846hrs need a Urgent Dust Off for one VC with M-79 frag wound to the leg, he was engaged when he tried to evade the 91 elements sweep of the area, completed Dust Off at 0900hrs. At 1858hrs Bravo Company we found a dud 155 round at grid BS790510. At 0945hrs Bravo Company we need a Urgent Dust Off for one VC Detainee with gunshot wounds who was trying to evade, no ID, one CIA Completed at 0936hrs. At 1945hrs we need and Urgent Dust Off for one VC detainee with gunshot wounds to the stomach and 1 Vietnamese civilian and baby with frag wounds to the body, grid BS775475, completed at 1000hrs. At 1045hrs Bravo Company we need a Routine Dust Off for one Vietnamese civilian with frag wounds of the buttocks at grid BS788490 completed at 1135hrs. At 1112hrs Bravo Company request Urgent Dust Off for one Vietnamese detainee with frag wounds to the body. At 1436hrs Bravo Company the 55 element found a rice cache at grid BS769425. We request 100 sandbags for extraction. The 84 element received fire from 3 AK-47’s and 1 M-79, the 84 element returned fire resulting in one detainee WIA. The 91 element got one VC detainee KIA male at 1115hrs, Dust Off complete at 1132hrs, at BS778468. The 55 element moved out on their Patrol and spotted 1 VC dressed in green, we fired on him and now checking out the area. At 1505hrs Bravo Company all elements have closed on their semi-permanent position except for the 55 element. At 1540hrs Bravo Company we have a total of 19 Vietnamese detainees. We have 18 males, 11 to 40 years old and one female about 30 years old. They were turn over to Military Intelligence. At 1715hrs Bravo Company we need an Urgent Dust Off for four PF who hit a booby trap M-26 grenade with Multiple Frag wounds, one PF KIA from 147 PF Platoon Dust Off completed at 1727hrs. At 1915hrs Bravo Company we need an Urgent Dust Off for one the arms, chest and legs, completed at 1919hrs grid BS771461. SP4 Wayne Miller was evac to 91st Evac Hospital. At 1935hrs Bravo Company the 93 snake is at BS783437. At 2140hrs the 56 element has returned to their semi permanent position.
Charlie Company

At 0755hrs Charlie Company the 53 and 84 elements have closed on BS701453. At 1103hrs Charlie Company we are at out present location at BS694467. At 1215hrs Charlie Company request a priority Dust Off for 1 female civilian who hit a booby trap, she had frag wounds to the legs and body, grid BS764531, completed at 1224hrs. At 1220hrs Our Night Defense Position will be at BS701453, the 54 snake will be at BS703450, the 85 snake will be at BS699454 and for tomorrow we will be moving to BS716445. At 1600hrs Charlie Company we found signs of about 5 VC in the vicinity of BS694465 and BS793469. The Kit Carson Scout believed they moved to the southwest. There were no signs of arms or a large number of people. We have covered all the area that is accessible. We found a mini gun jacket, a plow for hauling supplies and coils of vines. We plan to have two routes tomorrow through BS7044 and BS7144. At 0910hrs Charlie Company 54 is moving to grid BS701453, and at 1915hrs the 84 and 54 are at BS699454 and BS703450.
Delta Company

At 0643hrs Delta Company all snakes closed on BS762371. At 0755hrs Delta Company the 81 element is at BS774375 and the 91 element is at BS763383. At 1220hrs Delta Company reports we are moving out and at 1250hrs Delta Company reports our re supply location is at BS768370. At 1300hrs Delta Company 81 and 91 have closed on BS768370. At 1345hrs the 01 element is at BS768370 and Delta Company (-) is sweeping to the South and Southwest. At 1355hrs Delta Company our Night Defense Position is at BS768370, the 53 snake will be at BS760366, the 83 snake will be at BS778360, the 93 snake will be at BS777379 and tomorrow we will be running small patrols to the south. At 1436hrs Delta Company the 81 element has found what appears to be a logger for a large size force. We found numerous campfires in the area (about 3 days old). The logger is in the southwest part of the objective area. It could have been an ARVN Day Logger at grid BS778363. At 1510hrs Delta Company we need a Urgent Dust Off for four US personnel who hit a booby trap of an unknown type frag wounds to the legs at grid BS778363 completed at 1520hrs. At 1530hrs Delta Company we found a booby-trapped, M26 grenade with a pressure type (also release) trip at grid BS778363. At 1920hrs Delta Company we are now in our Night Defense Position at BS771461. At 1925hrs Delta Company the 53 snake has moved to BS760366, the 83 snake has move to BS778460 and the 93 snake has moved out for BS777379. Delta Company reports PFC ROBERT W Howard and SSG Robert G Mclellan Evac to 91st Evac, SP4 William P. Toffling and SP4 Richard E Holt Evac to B-23Medical, PSG Fred L. Battle Evac to Battalion Aid Station.
Echo Company
January 21, 1970
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0700hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Supporting Fires 12, Observed Missions 3 for at total expended 73 HE and 2 Illumination rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 1000hrs Recon we found a dud, Artillery round 155mm at grid BS790473 blew it in place and will move north. At 1225hrs Recon Platoon our present location is at BS797496 and we will accept re supply here. At 1320hrs Recon reports our Night Defense Position for tomorrow is at BS785497 and we will Combat Assault to LZ Liz. At 1801hrs Recon we received 5 incoming rounds of small arms fire from the north at grid (BS798496). We also spotted 1 VC with a green uniform to the east of our position, we returned fire but have negative results. We are calling in Artillery on the position we spotted the 2-3 VC about 600 meters from our position. At 1945hrs Recon we are now in our Night Defense Position at BS785500.
