Headquarters and Headquarter Company
December 21, 1970

Forward Area: (1-20 Infantry Headquarters) is located at LZ Liz and will continue to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0740hrs 1-20 Infantry 26 Engineers, mine sweep beginning at this time and at 0925hrs reports the Access Road open at this time. At 0800hrs Primo 2 is on station at 0804hrs, back on station at 0840hrs. At 0950hrs Alpha Company the Engineer working with Alpha Company located 1 booby trap 105mm Artillery round beside a trail, with trip wire and destroyed in place. At 1020hrs S-4 Dolphin 516 is on station for Resupply. At 1825hrs S-5 at LZ Dragon, reports bought the following ordinance from 5 Vietnamese children: 10 M-79 HE rounds, 1 M-26 hand frag, 1 60mm Mortar HE round, also 4 (4 to 6 pound) homemade frag, 3 (2 pound) hand frag, 1 81mm Mortar WP round, 1 pineapple frag and paid $1540 piasters and then the ordinance was destroyed in Place. At 2256hrs Blue Ghost 40 requests clearance for Box 68, cleared LT Lewis, negative friendly in box. Ghost 40 spotted a tunnel or spider hole at BS805465, engaged with mini gun with negative results he was then diverted him to BS799443, radar sighting of 3 to 4 personnel. Blue Ghost then engaged what looked to be 2 personnel evading with negative results, Blue Ghost is breaking station at 0018hrs. Legend: 1st Platoon 83-88, 2nd Platoon 33-38, 3rd Platoon 03-08, 4th Platoon 63-68 and CO 09.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
December 21, 1970

Alpha Company used patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1135hrs Alpha Company at BS699562 Engineers found 1 booby trap 155mm Artillery round. It was located in a bush and trip wire 24 inches off the ground running to another bush. It was located in a bush and trip wire 24 inches off the ground running to another bush. At 1250hrs Alpha Company vicinity BS687567, request Urgent Dust Off for 2 Vietnamese, 1 RF and 1 PF who hit a bobby trap, resulting in head and leg wounds, the booby trap was a hand frag with a trip device located on a trail ankle high Dust Off completed 1300hrs. Alpha Company OP Pax vicinity BS693538, 3rd Platoon detained 1 male age 23 wearing all black was pacing off the perimeter area when detained. At 1955hrs Alpha Company reports Command Post, 2nd and 4th Platoon at BS698564, 3rd Platoon BS692539, BS698542, BS696534, 2nd Platoon BS697564, BS695560, 1st Platoon BS672572, BS674566, BS670576. At 2230hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon ambush vicinity BS698542 spotted movement 100 meters to their north. They engaged with small arms, upon engaging the spotted 16-20 VC/NVA evading to their north. Under the 81mm Mortar Illumination they proceeded to check out the area, they found what appeared to be 8 drag marks of unknown origin, there was no blood trails. We did take some rounds but believe it was our little friends.

 

Bravo Company
December 21, 1970

Bravo Company is using patrolling and Day Ambushes today in their Area of Operation. Bravo Company 3rd Platoon vicinity BS750562, while on patrol they spotted 3 VC dressed as ARVN soldiers in a hootch. They engaged the evading VC at a distance of 50-75 meters. The VC evaded to the west, leaving behind 1 (M-16) magazine with (10 rounds), 1 pocket mirror and 1 cigarette lighter. The Platoon could not place accurate fire on the enemy due to the civilians in the area. They did detain 3 females and 1 boy in the area. The detainees were turned over to the RF working with the 3rd Platoon. The Platoon is ambushing the area at this time. Bravo Company 2nd Platoon at BS733464 while on patrol detainee one male age 50, wearing all white. Kit Carson Scout says he has a bad ID, was evading when the element approached. Also at BS730463, they picked up 2 female detainees, age 23- 33 wearing green and black, and blue and black. Kit Carson Scout says that they had bad ID’s and sent them back to Mo Duc.

 

Charlie Company
December 21, 1970

At 0720hrs Charlie Company the 1st Platoon checked out area of radar sighting vicinity BS794470 with negative finding and continued their patrolling and VIP Program in there Area of Operations. At 1015hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon patrol is moving out for BS767355. At 1300hrs Charlie Company vicinity BS759393, Command Post brought 2 81mm Mortar HE rounds from a 9 years old Vietnamese, for 3 cans of C-Rations destroyed in place. At 1605hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon purchased 1 60mm mortar round, 2 M-79, Bouncing Betty rounds, #Lot #MA/105/41:MA/105/18, 1 155 round fuse # 7161RCA, they purchased these items with 2 boxes and 2 cans of C Rations. At 1915hrs Charlie Company reports 3rd Platoon BS749402, BS742393, BS748382, 1st Platoon BS724415, Command Post and 4th Platoon at BS759393, Rat Patrol moving to BS729415. At 2015hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon is in location at BS771371, BS765378 and BS775367.

 

Delta Company
December 21, 1970

Delta Company will continue their Security Mission for LZ Liz. Delta Company 1st Platoon conducts a Patrol to BS756466 and back again to LZ Liz.

 

Echo Company
December 21, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for the 1-20 Infantry.
