Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 21, 1969
Battalion Forward: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and continued their working with the ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0620hrs Command is given out to the companies.
Battalion Rear: Battalion Rear continued their Mission for providing general support for the Battalion. At 1920hrs LZ Bronco reports we are now on yellow alert incoming rounds, 6 rounds of 82mm mortar fell short of Charlie sector. At 1920hrs LZ Bronco we are back on white alert at this time.
Alpha Company
August 21, 1969
At 0622hrs Alpha Company all my snake have finish the move back into the perimeter. At 2120hrs Alpha Company there will be 1 OP tonight. The 54 element will be vicinity BS710608. At 2040hrs Alpha Company 54 OP element is now in location. At 2230hrs Alpha Company we were hiding in a grid that was cleared and 4 of the 5 rounds fired were duds. I still have the double pins out of the rounds. I would like them all back hauled and inspected if possible, and I would like 45 81mm rounds sent to us if possible.
Bravo Company

At 1330hrs Bravo Company leaving LZ Liz at this time. At 1645hrs Bravo Company at Day Logger at BS774424. At 1625hrs the 51 snake location at BS777429 and at 1955hrs has moved to BS769418 and at 2040hrs the 51 and 91 snakes are in position at 2145hrs. The 25 snake while moving to BS778419 spotted 5 to 10 young men smoking pot and dancing around a fire, and the 25 element moved up and engaged them. They could see some bodies trying to drag themselves off after the firing. The 25 element is now staying at BS776420, the contact area, and will set up an OP. There were many family bunkers in the area so the 25 element didn’t pursue, because they might have walked into an ambush.
Charlie Company

At 0700hrs Charlie Company now leaving Night Defense Position and moving to the old Church which we reached at 0810hrs. At 0952hrs Charlie Company closed on LZ Liz at this time and took over the Security Mission for LZ Liz.
Delta Company
August 21, 1969
At 0630hrs Delta Company the 51 element has just moved out to grid 81 gave them last night (mortar site). 51 element at 0732hrs found about 3 to 4000 pounds of rice in 6 containers will need 70-75 100 pound bags rise bags to haul rice out, located near one hooch. Delta Company Urgent Dust Off one US with back injury slipped and fell (CPT Holmes) location BS739458 1654hrs Dust Off completed. At 1700hrs on 21 August 1969 LTC Wilson appointed 1LT Hata temporary commanding officer of Delta Company. Delta Company moved into their Night Defense Position and sent 91 and 51 snakes out at 2010hrs.
Echo Company
August 21, 1969
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0655hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Defense Targets 2, Schedule fires 1, Observe Mission 3 with expend 126HE, 8 WP, 1 Illumination rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. At 0448hrs Recon Platoon we are moving out of our snake location. At 0645hrs Recon Platoon we made initial contact with NVA element of 20-30 personnel we have 2 NVA KIA, 2 Chi Com and a rucksack. We have 2 US slightly wounded by frag. At 0715hrs we are now moving to a better location and will bring in Dust Off for the injured men and request a priority Dust Off for 2 personnel the Names Huesgen frag of thigh, Sturgell frag of the rear end. Godfrey was also sent in because of bad feet Dust Off complete 0932hrs. At 0750hrs Recon Platoon Final report on contact, saw one large group of NVA 15-20 people, also several groups of 2 or 3, believe we walked into a base camp. They didn’t have security out, have 3 confirmed KIA, 2 NVA plus 1 nurse (female) enemy equipment consists of pack, 3 Chi Com grenades and the nurses aid bag. At 1025hrs Recon as we started moving into contact area, the dinks fire warning shots from 5 or so different locations will continue to press in on them. At 1200hrs Recon is at BS704435, in about an hour will go to grid BS703436. At 1300hrs Recon Platoon reports their Night Defense Position at BS723430 with snake tonight at BS725436. At 1500hrs Recon is moving out to grid BS723430. At 1640hrs Recon Platoon they are in our day logger at this time at BS723430. At 1956hrs Recon reports we are now in snake location at BS725436. PFC Stephen Sturgell was attached to 91st Evac Hospital (11B10). Believe the other two sent in (PFC William Huesgen frag of thigh and SP4 Clifton M Godfrey).
