Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 21, 1968
Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Thunder and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0648hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC loner element at BS812296 observed 20 people in green and black uniforms with packs and weapons moving south to north. At 0648hrs 1-20 Infantry reports SRRP Loner at BS812296 observed 20 people in green and black uniforms with packs and weapons moving south to north. At 0745hrs Charlie Company 19 Engineer at BS921185 found on eastside of road a grenade in a sandbag. At 1040hrs 1-20 Infantry Command and Control Helicopter found a camouflaged hootch at 0951hrs at BS806293, Bravo Company will investigate it. At 2100hrs 1-20 Infantry reports Dust Off completed for EM burned by boiling water at LZ Charlie Brown, completed at 2059hrs.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 1300hrs Bunker collapsed on top of Montazuma, 2-3 men inside, Dust Off, Ship landed at location at 1310hrs. At 1615hrs Delta Company 19th Engineers at BS876312, a 5 ton truck, hit a mine resulting in 9 US WHA Dust Off called and completed at 1637hrs. Truck #20 while proceeding north hit a command detonated mine, injuring 4 EM and 5 Vietnamese. Crater was 6’ in diameter and 4 ½’ deep, believed to be a 155 round. The truck is still on fire, will remove in the morning.
Alpha Company
August 21, 1968
At 0843hrs Alpha Company at BS880268 engaged 1 VC in tree observing unit results in 1 VC KIA and with a sandbag containing fish and rice, a poncho and canteens. At 1010hrs Alpha Company is located at BS775405. At 1933hrs Alpha Company Night Defense Position is at BS778388 with ambushes at BS773379, BS768388, BS781386, and BS776405. At 1917hrs Alpha Company at BS781386 received 5 rounds automatic weapons fire, negative casualties and called in Artillery on enemy position.
Bravo Company
August 21, 1968
At 0845hrs Bravo Company at BS805296. At 0921hrs 1-20 Infantry Command and Control Helicopter found a camouflaged hootch at BS806293 and Bravo Company will investigate it. At 1933hrs Bravo Company established their Night Defense Position at BS830301 with ambushes at BS792286, BS798282, BS802298, BS806302, BS835294 and BS844287.
Charlie Company
August 21, 1968
Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Thunder. At 0858hrs Alpha Company at BS880268 engaged 1 VC in tree observing unit results in 1 VC KIA had sandbag containing fish and rice a poncho and canteens. At 1742hrs at BS884278 Charlie Company detained 1 VCS, bad ID, approximately 25, will evac to LZ Bronco. At 1933hrs Charlie Company at LZ Thunder with ambushes at BS883273, BS808296 and 32 is on bridge 111. At 1817hrs Charlie Company spotted 2-3 VC on trail moving northeast, 1 was wearing a pack and will continue to observe.
Delta Company
August 21, 1968
Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Charlie Brown and 0715hrs at BS934130, 1 boat tried to evade, fired warning shots across bow, one shot ricocheted and wounded one VCS leg, Dust Off called. At 1933hrs Delta Company reports locations ambushes BS904193, BS907209 and a LP at BS932222. The Delta Company reports the 30 element Night Defense Position at BS928168 with 22 on Bridge 94. At 1935hrs Delta Company at BS925169, received 30 rounds of small arms fire, returned fire with negative results. At 2040hrs Delta Company at BS890199 ambush leaving resupply area found 1 Punji pit, 2 holes, 2’ apart dogs alerted the patrol continued to move south and found a pit approximately 200 meters south along same trail, will destroy in morning, negative casualties, ambush continued on.
Echo Company
August 21, 1968
Echo Company is located at LZ Thunder where Battalion Forward is and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and Base Defense elements on LZ Thunder. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Thunder where they continue to provide direct fire support for the (1-20 Infantry Battalion). Believe the Recon Platoon is still located at Special Forces Camp at Ha Thanh.
