June 20, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0400hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC Radar Targets sighted 6 to 7 stationary personnel at BS811435 and engaged with 10 HE of Artillery 155mm and at 0145hrs 6 to 7 stationary personnel were sighted at BS758398 and engaged with 8 HE and Alpha Company informed. At 0220hrs 8 to 10 stationary personnel were sighted at BS770486 and engaged with 14 HE and Bravo Company informed. At 0745hrs the TMF Fox Mike is in progress at String 73 with 8 personnel that where moving southwest to northeast with metal confirmed, negative clearance due to an RD area. At 0820hrs Charlie Company 26 Engineer our work location is at BS7455610. At 1026hrs the TMF String 66 has FM from a stationary target with metal detected and engaged with 16 VT rounds Artillery 105. At 1700hrs Charlie Company 26 Engineer a total of 27 hours were worked with a total of 27 acres cleared in the area BS740610 to BS740612 to BS745610 to BS745612. We destroyed 2 105mm duds and had 1 WIA from shrapnel when demolition was used. 250 gallons of fuel were used. 3 D7 are operational with 1 deadline with a bad track and 1 CEV is operational with 1 CEV deadline with a poor transmission. At 1730hrs S-4 The Vietnamese children brought in 1 60mm round, 1 81mm round, 1 155mm round, 2 dud rockets from Gun ships, and 7 M-16 antipersonnel mines. A total of 800 Vietnamese was paid for the ordnance, which was blown in place. At 1800hrs Battalion S-5 1-20 Infantry conducted a joint Medical Clinic at the Duc Pho Hospital at BS800361. The Battalion Surgeon along with 2 Vietnamese nurses treated 15 Vietnamese civilians. Brigade Psyophs conducted tape broadcasts for the TOC of 1-20 Infantry at BS6951, BS7358 and BS7363. There were 30 minutes of tape and enemy units targets were the 38 LF and C19 element. There was a Vietnamese child evacuated at 1430hrs to the 23 Med at LZ Bronco for M-79 wounds, received form detonated a dud round, the incident occurred at BS763435, the wounds were minor and was reported in good condition. At LZ Bronco the Vietnamese children turned into SP4 Tetu of Headquarters and Headquarter Company which where paid by Battalion S-4. At 1830hrs Brigade the convoy from Qui Nhon to Chu Lai leaves Qui Nhon 210830 June 1970 and returns 22 June 1970 it will leave Chu Lai at 220800hrs June 1970. At 2155hrs at 2142hrs the String 73b was activated by 3 personnel moving southwest at 3 miles per hour with metal detected and engaged with 12 HE of VT Artillery 105mm. At 2230hrs Delta Company and Charlie Company 26 Engineer the booby trap that the engineer found today at 0900hrs was a 105mm WP round at BS735605had a trip wire firing device, with fish lines. There was do damage or casualties when the round was destroyed. We will be working in the vicinity of BS735605 tomorrow. At 1958hrs Delta Company we are in our Night Defense Position at BS755565 with multiply ambushes out today.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. Charlie Company reports SGT Wayne Geoffrey was treated and released Frag wound to upper arms time 1100hrs classified as Misc.

 

Alpha Company
June 20, 1970

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 1420hrs Alpha Company reports a Vietnamese child had a M-79 round go off near him outside the wire bordering the Access Road he has frag wounds to the head (slight) was evacuated to Bronco by vehicle grid BS777445. LZ Bronco reports the child OK and he had detonated the M-79 practice round.

 

Bravo Company
June 20, 1970

At 1815hrs Bravo Company 76 element picked up one male, approximately 38 was dressed in US military clothing with no ID sent to MACV grid BS760455.

 

Charlie Company
June 20, 1970

At 0725hrs Charlie Company 95, 93, 24, and 25 elements have closed on BS740477. At 1920hrs we are moving to our Night Defense Position at BS746465. At 2000hrs Charlie Company we are in our Night Defense Position at BS744465 with multiply ambushes out tonight.

 

Delta Company
June 20, 1970

At 0650hrs Delta Company the snakes will stay in location until 1000hrs the 21 element will stay in location until 1800hrs, Red Leg will go to grid BS743608 (right .5, drop .5 left .5 and up .5). We will not Cordon and Search Ville to the east of yesterday’s Day Logger because it is no longer there. We will Cordon and Search the Ville and area directly north of that at BS750622. At 0830hrs request a routine Dust Off for a US who slipped and injured his back on a stump it is stilling bothering him and medic thinks he needs medical attention at BS744615 and a Dust Off was completed at 0935hrs. At 1037hrs Delta Company at 1000hrs we are returning to the Day Logger at BS751620 with the 21 snake remaining in position at BS736618 and then join the Day Logger at 1600hrs. At 1047hrs Delta Company the 91 and 92 elements are in the Night Defense Position and the 22 and 93 elements are in the Night Defense Position and the 22 and 93 element has closed on the Day Logger. Delta Company reports SP4 Albert L. Miller was evac to the 27th Surgical Hospital.

 

Echo Company
June 20, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 4.2 Platoon reports Fire Mission 6 for a total expended of 16 HE rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 1005hrs Recon Platoon we are now on the trucks for this morning move. At 1425hrs Recon Platoon we are in our Day Logger at BS743560. At 2009hrs Recon Platoon reports their locations 21 element is at BS747551, the 22 element is at BS748558 and the 23 element is at BS760558.
