Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0020hrs MACV Mo Duc, PF 162 on 191500hrs vicinity BS738549 made contact with unknown size enemy force resulting in 1 PF KIA, 2 VC KIA and CIA 4 Chi Com grenades, not US confirmed. At 0225hrs Bravo Company LZ Liz LT Woiansky inspected bunkers 15, 16, 17, 1, 2 and 3 all were satisfactory. At 0401hrs Bravo Company LZ Liz SGT Wilson inspected bunkers 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 results was satisfactory. At 0740hrs 4 ARVN Recon on 200300hrs vicinity BS865344 made contact with unknown size enemy force resulting in 2 VC KIA and 2 VC CIA, also 19 suspects were taken to Bronco. At 0750hrs LZ Liz Access Road has been mine swept. At 0805hrs 1-20 Infantry Primo 3 is on station at this time and broke station at 0900hrs. At 0830hrs TO All Companies Commanders FROM LTC Whitley Future Operational planning is to reflect the following guidance: 1. Day movement is de-emphasized to the following operation al necessities, a. Local security operations, b. reconnaissance for night ambush and Mechanical Ambush locations. 2. Maximum emphasis is on night operation a. night ambushing is to be utilized to the maximum, b. perimeter type Night Defense Position locations are thereby discouraged, c. Mechanical Ambushes offensive utilization is to be increased to augment night ambushes. At 0900hrs 1-20 Infantry Primo 3 has broken station at this time. At 1050hrs MACV Mo Duc PF 165 vicinity BS710540 requests 1 Urgent Dust Off for 3 PF, 1 KIA, 2 WIA with multiple frag wounds to head, stomach and legs caused by Booby trap (unknown type), Bird 51 completed 1100hrs results 2 KIA and 1 WIA. At 1130hrs LATE SPOT RF 190 at 0650hrs while on Search and Clear Operation VC sniper wounded 1 RF not US confirmed. At 1130hrs PF 253 at 1000hrs vicinity BS780380 made contact with 1 VC Platoon resulting in 1 military committeemen KIA and 1 M-16 CIA by VC. At 1600hrs PF 174 RF 169 and PRU at 1345hrs vicinity BS792448 while on Search and Clear mission blew a bunker resulting in 4 VC KIA and 1 VC CIA, also CIA 1 AK 47 and enemies where from C 219, US confirmed. At 2111hrs LZ Liz went on Alert because of accidental firing of a Red Star Custer, Bravo Company 100% at 2112hrs Access Road, North OP and South OP all achieved 100% at 2115hrs, cease fire at 2113hrs is satisfactory. At 2345hrs 1-20 Infantry report on Field Strength on 20 July 1971 Alpha Company 41 with 6 attached total of 47, Bravo Company 48 and 6 attached for total of 54. Also Charlie Company 37 with 7 attached for total of 44, Delta Company 48 and 10 attached for total of 58, Recon 6 in field and 6 on LZ Liz for total of 12, Headquarters and Headquarters Company 7 and Echo Company total of 17. At 2215hrs Bravo Company LZ Liz, SGT Wilson inspected bunkers 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 results were satisfactory. Legend: 1st Platoon 81, 2nd Platoon 83, 3rd Platoon 59, 4th Platoon 88, CO-50.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for Chu Lai.
Alpha Company

Alpha Company will continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1900hrs Alpha Company changed their Night location because of multiple booby traps. At 2022hrs all elements in locations Command Post and 2nd Platoon at BS710480, 1st Platoon at BS696473 with 4 Mechanical Ambush out. Field Strength has a field Strength today 41 with 6 attached for total 47.
Bravo Company
July 20, 1971
Bravo Company Continue their Security Mission for LZ Liz and Access Road security. At 2111hrs LZ Liz went on Alert, Bravo Company 100%, ceases fire at 1231hrs, Alert over at 2125hrs and rated satisfactory with Bravo Company Field Strength of 48 and 6 attached for a total of 54 for the day.
Charlie Company

Charlie Company set up Patrol Base and conducts multiple patrols in their Area of Operation. At 0726hrs Charlie Company element is moving to Patrol Base vicinity BS701516. At 0938hrs Charlie Company Command Post and 2nd Platoon found 1 20mm dud round in Patrol Base vicinity BS699509 and blown in place. At 1744hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon is moving to Night Defense Position vicinity BS705514. At 2008hrs Charlie Company in their Night Defense Position at BS705514, Field Strength for Charlie Company today 37 plus 7 attached for a total 44.
Delta Company
July 20, 1971
Delta Company will continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0851hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon spotted 6 to 8 VC, 2 confirmed with weapons, wearing green on black and gray uniforms. They seemed to be setting up an ambush at grid BS753368 swept area and found 1 12 year old detainee wearing black and red, was sent in on back haul. At 0925hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon 3 Vietnamese children brought in 1 M-72 Law, they gave the children C Rations and some Piasters, Serial # S2638. Delta Company Conducts a Combat Assault along with Alpha and Charlie Companies 1st PZ 1136hrs and last LZ at 1220hrs Delta Company is located on LZ Liz and taken over the Security Mission for LZ Liz.
Echo Company
July 20, 1971
Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 1618hrs Recon is moving out to LZ Liz at this time and closed on LZ Liz at 0650hrs. At 1818hrs Recon is moving to Night Defense Position vicinity BS761401 and closed on location at 2012hrs.
