Headquarters and Headquarter Company
January 20, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0230hrs MACV Mo Duc at BS758490 got 1 male 18-25 Chieu Hoi, medic doctor with AK47 dressed in black, at MACV now. At 0520hrs Q Company trip flare went off to the north of their location. They engaged with M-16 and M-203 fire, spotted 1 personnel evading at a high rate of speed to the north, will check the area in the morning. At 0745hrs checked the immediate area with negative results, will continue to search further to the north. At 0800hrs Primo 5 is on station for Command and Control Helicopter. At 0801hrs Helix 32 is on station will check the Gaza strip south on Nui Ong Do, all also check foothills east of Iron Mountain. At 0840hrs Helix 32 is breaking station with negative findings. At 0853hrs 1-20 Infantry the AMC Ship is on station for Combat Assault and at 0945hrs AMC ship braking station, Combat Assault is completed and at 1025hrs Bravo Company closed on Stand Down area at LZ Bronco. At 1103hrs Helix 37 breaking station, reports ridgeline, eastern side Iron Mountain has been recently used, shows heavy travel, no sign of personnel now there, old Night Defense Position does show signs of recent use. At 1330hrs S-4 Dolphin 516 is on station for re supply. At 1347hrs TMF at 1332hrs String 312 B has 4 to 5 personnel moving southeast to northwest at 3 miles per hour with metal confirmed received negative clearance due to RD Zone. At 1500hrs Charlie Battery 6/11 on patrol an element found a skeleton (Large) in some high grass which they were burning. They placed the bones in a box and sent them to 1-20 Infantry TOC on Liz and box was then sent to 23rd Medical for evaluation. At 1840hrs TMF, at 1828hrs String 310A spotted 2 to 3 personnel that where moving southwest to northeast at 3 miles per hour, negative metal confirm, and negative clearance due to RD Zone. At 1932hrs TMF at 1924hrs Sting 313B has 2 to 3 personnel that are moving southeast to northwest at 3 miles per hour, negative metal confirmed and engaged at 1928hrs with 8 VT HE Artillery 105mm. At 2215hrs Blue Ghost 44 is on station for Box 69Y and is breaking station at 2325hrs. Legend: 1st Platoon 34-39, 2nd Platoon 04-09, 3rd Platoon 94-99, 4th Platoon 54-59, CO-16.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
January 20, 1971

Alpha Company continued to use Patrol Bases and Saturation Patrolling with Day Ambushes in their Area of Operation. At 0731hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon ambush in location at BS738394. At 0902hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon is moving out for Patrol Base at BS740412 with 2nd Platoon moving to Patrol Base at BS719437 and closed on locations at 0929hrs. At 1010hrs Alpha Company Command Post with 3rd and 4th Platoon in Patrol Base vicinity BS720436, 2nd Platoon patrol at checkpoint 2 at BS723426 and 1st Platoon patrol is moving out for BS744417. At 1027hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon patrol is at checkpoint 1 at BS744417, 2nd Platoon patrol closed at BS719437 and 3rd Platoon patrol is moving out for BS710437. At 1642hrs Alpha Company 4th Platoon vicinity BS719436 bought 2 105 rounds an d1 4.2 round from 10 Vietnamese children ages 8 to 12, paid them 6 meals of C Rations, no lot #, will destroy all rounds in place. At 1745hrs Alpha Company Command Post with 3rd and 4th Platoons in location at BS737437. At 1946hrs Alpha Company Command Post with 3rd and 4th Platoon is at BS737437, 1st Platoon at BS747405 and BS749409, 2nd Platoon at BS713434, BS707428 and 3rd Platoon Rat Patrol checkpoints BS742436, BS744430, BS734342 with ambush at BS732460.

 

Bravo Company
January 20, 1971

At 1025hrs Bravo Company closed on their Stand Down area at LZ Bronco.

 

Charlie Company
January 20, 1971

At 0809hrs Charlie Company moving from LZ Bronco to LZ Dragon and closed on Dragon at 0846hrs. At 0951hrs the 3rd Platoon patrol closed on OP Wink vicinity BS699562. At 1210hrs Charlie Company vicinity BS699562, village chief of Duc Thuch visited OP Wink, said an explosion on Jan 13 vicinity BS706567 killed 1 VC and wounded 1 VC were carried off to hospital in the mountains, explosion was a booby trap. At 1705hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon patrol is moving out for BS678568. At 1750hrs Charlie Company vicinity BS673572, requested Priority Dust Off for 1 US will frag wounds to the left forearm, received this during a fire in the hole. PFC Spezia, Dust Off completed at 1800hrs. At 2035hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon ambush is at BS696533, 2nd Platoon ambush is cancelled and 3rd Platoon ambush is in location at BS698564. Charlie Company reports PFC James L. Spezia reports at Charlie 23 Medical with frag wound left arm blowing enemy ordinance.

 

Delta Company
January 20, 1971

Delta Company (-) is on LZ Liz and will continued their Security Mission. At 1221hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon patrol closed vicinity BS753568. At 1412hrs Delta Company at OP Frag vicinity BS753568 Boxcar 29 25-30 rounds of small arms fire at OP Frag and 10-15 rounds going in and 20 rounds going out and took damage going back for repairs. It was engaged at a distance of 400 meters to the east, took 10-15 rounds going in and 800 meters to the southwest took 20 rounds while leaving. She took 3 damaging rounds, 1 in bottom through fuel tank, 1 by the left door gunner, and I in loading ramp through a hydraulic line. At 1634hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon patrol is at checkpoint1 vicinity BS762578. At 1740hrs Delta Company vicinity BS755583, 1st Platoon detained 1 Vietnamese female age 18, wearing all black and evaded when the element approached the area. Kit Carson Scout feels that she should be questioned, will be taken to Mo Duc. At 1930hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon ambush is in location at BS753565.

 

Echo Company
January 20, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry.
