Headquarters and Headquarter Company
February 20, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0444hrs Saber 44 is on station and at 0522hrs Saber 44 is at BS778399, saw signs of quite a bit of movement, and several well used trails, Saber 44 broke station. At 0715hrs RF 143, OP Frag vicinity BS753573, MACV Mo Duc requests Urgent Dust Off for 3 Vietnamese from RF 143 wounds inflicted by mortar attack (3 rounds 81mm), Dust Off completed at 0735hrs. At 0720hrs 1-20 Infantry Hornet is on station for AMC Ship. At 0850hrs 26 Engineers reports Access Road Open. At 0900hrs Primo 3 is on Command and Control Helicopter. At 1514hrs Primo 4 is on station for Command and Control Helicopter. At 1800hrs Primo 4 is on station for last light Visual Recon. At 1900hrs Battalion Commander and Primo 4 in a last light Visual Recon sighted 1 raft 4’ X 8" at BS865375 and destroyed it. It had been used within the past 12 hours. Negative other sighting on the Visual Recon. At 1915hrs Primo 4 is breaking station total time 1 hour. At 2350hrs TMF 2350hrs String 313A, unknown number, has stationary personnel with negative metal confirmed, and engaged at 2359hrs with 12 HE VT rounds Artillery 105mm.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. Legend: 1st Platoon 02-07, 2nd Platoon 42-47, 3rd Platoon 92-97, 4th Platoon 52-57, CO-01.

 

Alpha Company
February 20, 1971

At 1035hrs Alpha Company Command Post, 1st, 4th Platoon at BS693473 with 2nd Platoon moving to BS701477, 1st Platoon patrol moving to BS687494, and 3rd Platoon patrol moving out for BS668485. At 1140hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon vicinity BS679496, while continuing their base camp area search found 1 fresh grave site containing 1 NVA KIA by small arms fire (5 days old), 1 pack of Vietnamese cigarettes, 1 NVA rucksack (empty), 5 old plastic rice bags (empty), old gauze bandages. Also 1 D cell battery and 3 empty NVA cans of tuna fish (NVA C Rations) and then continuing their Sweep and Clear Operation. At 1330hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon patrol at BS687494, 2nd Platoon patrol BS674466 and the 3rd Platoon patrol BS665484. At 1740hrs 1st Platoon vicinity BS690502 found a freshly dug trench 2’ wide, 4-5’ deep and 75 to 100 meters long, believe that it was dug today, fresh dirt, hoe, and cigarette butt was found around the trench. Trails were found leading away from it to the west from the stream to the high grounds under cover. At 1910hrs Alpha Company all patrols closed Command Post, 2nd and 4th Platoon is at BS694473, 2nd platoon ambush BS694464, 3rd Platoon moving to BS667495 and 1st Platoon moving to BS686495.

 

Bravo Company
February 20, 1971

At 0751hrs Bravo Company ambushes closed 1st Platoon BS639572, 2nd Platoon BS649574 and 3rd Platoon on BS635568. At 0945hrs Bravo Company Command Post 1st and 4th Platoon is at BS657575, 2nd Platoon BS656565 and 3rd Platoon at BS654575. At 1035hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon conducts a Combat Assaults started at 1030hrs and completed at 1035hrs with PZ BS654573 to BS649580. At 1055hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon vicinity BS651565, moving to Patrol Base received 1 hand frag from the west approximately 35 meters. Results with 1 WHA with frag wounds Dust Off by Combat Assault bird to LZ Bronco. Gun ships engaged the area and the 2nd Platoon is now sweeping the area. At 1100hrs Bravo Company 3rd Platoon found 1 anti personnel (M-14) mine with a pressure release device, it was located a couple of inches off the trail and was destroyed in place. At 2005hrs Alpha Company elements all in their location Command Post, 1st and 4th Platoon at BS657577, 1st Platoon ambush at BS658577, 2nd Platoon BS652564, BS653564 and 3rd Platoon at BS659585, BS658587. PFC Edward D Slette was evac to the 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Charlie Company
February 20, 1971

Charlie Company continued to use multiple ambushes Day and Night in their Area of Operation with some patrolling in their Area of Operation 3rd Platoon Day ambush is at BS705550 and 1st Platoon at BS691531. At 0900hrs Charlie Company vicinity BS699562 priority Dust Off for 1 US with high fever, had convulsions last night, laceration to right side of head and a blood deficiency completed at 0929hrs. At 1630hrs Charlie Company at OP Pax small children brought to OP Pax 5 hand frag, 10 M-60 rounds, dud M-79 round, 2 Duster rounds, paid them 3 meals of C Rations, destroyed rounds in place. Delta Company 1st Platoon ambush is cancelled. At 1820hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon is at Wood stock heard a loud speaker broadcasting in Vietnamese from their north vicinity BS673592 and BS678583. Content of message: Americans are Number 10, ARVN are number 10, and ARVN should get out and go to the RED Ball. Fire Mission requested, the Vietnamese engaged the area with 60mm mortar. At 1926hrs Charlie Company at OP Wink vicinity BS699562 had a Mechanical Ambush detonate and checked area with negative findings, will check area again at first light.

 

Delta Company
February 20, 1971

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz along with road security.

 

Echo Company
February 20, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 0750hrs Recon Patrol is moving out for 720430. At 1925hrs Recon is in their Night Logger position at BS724438. At 1946hrs Recon vicinity BS423435, while in night ambush location heard 30 rounds of automatic weapons fire 150 to 250 meters to their south. They believed it to be an enemy squad using Recon by Fire. They had negative findings, negative artillery due to proximity of friendly villages. More follows had radar sighting of 7 to 9 personnel that where moving south at BS709428 believed to be above enemy. Check the area with negative findings. At 2015hrs Recon is in their location vicinity BS724438.
