Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0125hrs MACV Team at LZ Max reports LZ Max appeared to be taking incoming, personnel here contacted MACV Mo Duc. Who in turn contacted LZ Max Team they had requested Gun ships also noted that possible there was a VC/NVA flag flying on LZ Max (not confirmed by US) as of yet. They then started to engage the area. MACV called for Urgent Dust Off for 2 US and 1 Vietnamese and Dust Off completed at 0325hrs. The personnel on the ground bringing in the Dust Off confirmed that LZ Max was evacuated and that the VC/NVA was possible in the bunkers. US personnel confirmed this when gun ships received some fire while flying over LZ Max. Later MACV Mo Duc confirmed that at least 1 bunker was still in PF hands. While the gun ships were working in the vicinity LZ Max reports came in from MACV that the Nui Ong Do OP was also being hit by indirect fire and ground attacks. MACV personnel got up into an aircraft and directed the gun ships on contacts at LZ Max and Nui Ong Do which they suspected as enemy locations or received fire from, no casualties report or damage reports as of now. At 0215hrs Warlords is on station. At 0515hrs South OP and Stinger 89, Stinger 89 came on station to check the area west of LZ Liz with the aid of the South OP. He had no flares and had to rely on the searchlight on the South OP to guide him. He continued to work in the area checking suspected enemy locations. He broke station at 0550hrs with negative results. At 0726hrs MACV Mo Duc vicinity BS776535, request Urgent Dust Off for 7 PF completed at 0750hrs. At 0730hrs S-4 Hornet 616 is on station for re supply. At 0747hrs 26 Engineers Access Road sweep has been started. At 0758hrs Helix 34 is on station, discovered 3 to 4 new trails and many footprints on sandbar vicinity BS716423 broke station at 0840hrs. At 0751hrs MACV Mo Duc requests Urgent Dust Off vicinity BS765473 for 7 ARVN, 7 litters, 3 Urgent and 4 Priority completed at 0805hrs. At 0814hrs LZ Liz, crater analysis, direction 4500 distance 2 kilometers, weapon 82 mortar, suspected grids BS7343/BS7243. At 0825hrs 26 Engineers reports Access Road Open. At 0858hrs 1-20 Infantry Warlord 38/Air Calvary Team 20 is on station to check foothills west of LZ Max. At 1007hrs Warlords vicinity BS746743, US inserted west of LZ Max, checking bunker grave combination. Warlord also sighted 4 to 5 military age males. At 1024hrs Warlords detained 1 military age male, no ID, dressed in blue and black, sent to LZ Liz. At 1106hrs Warlord 9 vicinity BS741473, ground troops working with Warlords found tunnel with extremely large opening. Large enough to drive a 2 ½ ton tucks in. At 1119hrs S-4 Hornet 71 is breaking station. At 1245hrs Warlord 38 vicinity BS6949, located a large cleared out area. Many used trails leading in and out, thinks it could possible are a staging area. At 1257hrs Helix 37 is on station and broke station at 1305hrs with negative findings. At 1335hrs Warlord 26 is on station and at 1405hrs Primo 3 is on station. At 1420hrs 1-20 Infantry reports Warlord 38, is diverted south by the 11 Brigade. At 1555hrs Primo 3 is breaking station. At 1600hrs MACV MO Duc requests Urgent Dust Off for 2 RF with multiply frag wounds vicinity BS777472, Dust Off took fire going to pick up area and completed at 1635hrs. At 1600hrs 103rd RF Company while on a Operation east of Thach Tri vicinity BS777472, elements of 103rd RF Battalion hit a booby trap wounding 3 RF, Dust Off 54 entered PZ and took small arms fire and 2 rounds of M-79 fire. Dust Off left LZ and with out taking pick up and orbited area to check gauges. Ground unit was then taken under fire by an unknown size enemy element. Dust Off 54, returned to area with gun ships and made pick up, it was completed at 1635hrs. At 1640hrs Helix 32 is breaking station. At 1645hrs MACV Mo Duc REPORT Vicinity BS760464 at DATE/TIME 010115hrs February 1971 estimated Enemy Company of unknown designation with snappers (possible Recon 38), attacked Thach Thu Hamlet. The attack was proceeds by 82 and 60mm mortar barrage (30 rounds). The enemy proceeded from BS760464 into the center of the hamlet. They then threw satchel charges on top of the advisors bunker and assaulted LZ MAX at BS763472. The enemy raised an NFL (Red, Yellow and Blue) on top of LZ Max (destroyed by gun ships) the enemy proceeded through the hamlet throwing satchel charges in business area, commercial stores and village chief’s house. The enemy broke contact at 0630hrs resulting: PF 157 had 8 WIA, PF 148 had 7 WIA and 6 KIA, PF 260 0 WIA and 2 KIA, Advisor 2 WIA, 1 village commercial member KIA, 1 Interpreter KIA. Equipment losses, 8 M-16 damage in action, 1 PRC 25, 1 60mm mortar. Enemy losses: 6 confirmed KIA, 1 AK 47 CIA, 1 B-40 launcher, 6 60mm mortar rounds and 25 Chi Com grenades CIA. At 1700hrs MACV Mo Duc REPORTS vicinity BS769530 At 0215hrs VC infiltrated into Nui Ong Do fishing village. Their attack was preceded by 10-15 rounds of 60mm mortar fire. Flare and Gun ships where able to assisted and contact broken at DATE/TIME 100600 February 1971. Results 1 PSDF KIA, 6 PSDF WIA, 2 PSDF MIA, 1 RD KIA, 2 carbines MIA, Enemy 7 VC KIA, 2 VC WIA CIA, 1 AK47 CIA, 1 B 40 launcher, 5 B-40 rounds, 15 Chi Com and 15 pounds TNT CIA. At 1700hrs MACV MO Duc REPORT vicinity BS745530 at 0230hrs unknown # of VC mortared Thiet Trung OP, 4 rounds 60mm mortar fire. No ground attack, no casualties, no damage. At 1912hrs TMF Q Company at 1905hrs String 310 C, has 2 to 3 moving northeast to southwest, metal confirmed and engaged at 1912hrs with 10 HE Artillery 105mm. At 1940hrs TMF at 1928hrs string 314 B unknown numbers of personnel stationary with metal confirmed and engaged at 1933hrs with 12 HE Artillery 105mm. Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. LZ Max was being hit hard and part of it was overrun. At 0135hrs LZ Liz was being hit with 82mm Mortar attack, 18-20 rounds hit the wire west of LZ Liz. Gun ships arrived to check out the West Side of LZ Liz. Alpha Company had moved to LZ Bronco to take the Security Mission for LZ Liz.
Bravo Company

At 0817hrs Bravo Company 1st Platoon ambush closed on BS683582, 2nd Platoon closed on BS672582, 3rd Platoon at BS657576. At 1000hrs Bravo Company request routine Dust Off for 1 US with possible broken leg, S2786 completed at 1024hrs. At 1120hrs Bravo Company reached Highway 1 for pick up and at 1135hrs Bravo Company in vehicles closing on LZ Liz and closed at 1150hrs. At 1935hrs Bravo Company Command Post, 2nd and 4th Platoon at BS735431, 2nd Platoon at BS734431, BS735430, 3rd Platoon at BS736450, BS735450, BS736452, 1st Platoon at BS748422, BS746420, BS748421.
Charlie Company

OP Max was particular over run early this morning and with support of Gun ships reestablished control of the OP. At 1325hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon moving out for BS699572. At 1550hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon perimeter patrol moving out to BS691539 and the 3rd Platoon closed on BS699563 and vicinity BS698554 will on patrol found and destroyed 1 81mm round booby trap. At 1540hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon Patrol closed on vicinity BS693538. Charlie Company reports SGT Wayne R. Prumier was evac to the 27th Surgical Hospital (11F40).
Delta Company

At 0135hrs LZ Liz in coming mortar fire 18-20 rounds of 82mm fire which hit in the wire to the west of Liz and inside wire approximately 50 meters from the bunkers. At 0125hrs LZ Max appeared to be taking incoming under heavy fire from 82mm mortars and small arms fire. Guns ships were working in vicinity of LZ Max. At 0519hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon at OP Frag received 3 rounds of M-79 fire none closer then 75 meters to the OP, negative damage or injuries. Delta Company continued with saturation Patrolling. At 0818hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon patrol base at BS743432, Command Post and 3rd Platoon patrol Base at BS734449 and 3rd Platoon ambush is closing vicinity. At 0829hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon ambush closed on BS735465. At 1045hrs Delta Company 3rd Platoon ambush closed on BS734449. At 1715hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon closed BS753568. At 1930hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon at OP Frag and ambush in location BS751564. At 2100hrs 1-20 Infantry has a practice alert which end at 2110hrs. At 2207hrs TMF String 313 B unknown number of personnel station with metal confirmed and engaged at 1933hrs with 12 HE Artillery 105mm.
Echo Company

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry.
