August 1, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0815hrs Brigade the hooks are disapproved completely for the move of the Jump CP, recommend use of a 5 ton wrecker to load Connexs on 2 ½ ton vehicles at the Command Post location. At 1200hrs North OP at BS740449, 5 to 6 stationary personnel were sighted with negative clearance. At 1220hrs Brigade at BS748444 reports 4 US POW’s and 30 ARVN POW with 6 VC guards with AK 47 according to intelligence. Brigade has a Mission in the Date/Time/grid 312200 to 010500 of carrying rice and fish, 2 bags per man, will leave on a 15 day mission to BS748437 in a direct route from BS727396 to BS7035, possible base camp area. The POW is dressed in black and appeared well. All US POW are Caucasian and ARVN are POW from Duc Pho District and 1 PF POW said he came from Nui Can VO, vicinity BS7035 and the US POW probably captured for a long time since they were no tied. Bravo Company will be OPCON to the 4-3 Infantry to react to Intelligence. At 1234hrs TMF String 73 sighted 5 personnel that where moving southwest to northeast with metal detected and negative clearance due to the RD area. At 1235hrs S-2 a source says there is a document cache from Mo Duc with 10 personnel guarding the cache armed with 4 AK47, 3 SKS and 3 pistols. The source recommends reaction with CPT Beavers and the source and 2 personnel will go to Delta Company for the operations. Their names are Dung, District Security Cadre, Nguyen Thuan, Team Leader and Than Dai assistant team leader. At 1236hrs Brigade effective 1400hrs Bravo Company will be OPCON to 4-3 Infantry for Combat Assault at 1400hrs to reported POW Camp at BS705355 will have 12 lift ships with PZ at LZ Liz access road. At 1410hrs Bravo Company is at the PZ for out move to LZ at BS705355 to become OPCON to the 4-3 infantry. Legend: 1st Platoon 52-57, 2nd Platoon 34-39, 3rd Platoon 72-77, 4th Platoon 42-47 and Commanding Officer -70.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. SP4 Thomas Rodelfo was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Alpha Company
August 1, 1970

At 0935hrs Alpha Company we request an Urgent Dust Off for two US who hit a 155 round, booby trapped with a trip wire set up in a thicket with fishing wire, at BS732623. The results are PFC Little with Multiple Frag Wounds to both legs and SP4 Rollyson with frag wounds to the left arm, Dust Off completed at 0945hrs. Alpha Company the 74 element has one male detainee at BS732624 was evading from the area of the booby trap. He had an ID, old type 8 ½ X 11 no picture, Nguyen Hanh, and ID says he is 12, but appears to be 16-20 and will be evac to Military Intelligence Bronco. At 1850hrs Alpha Company the 76 element at BS732612, found in the back of a hootch, one BAR magazine, an old pistol belt, M2 carbine magazine. Also old US pistol bell, one bottle of US penicillin, one black shirt, and one pair of suspenders, the type used on backpacks. We will extract these items on Re Supply 2 Aug 70. SP4 Larry W. Rollyson (Multiple frag wounds right arm, both legs and right side) and PFC James A. Little (multiple frag wounds right leg) was evac to 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Bravo Company
August 1, 1970

At 1300hrs Bravo Company 1-20 Infantry (100 AJAX) pick up at LZ Liz to Brigade Forward at LZ San Juan Hill. Charlie Company 4-3 Infantry and Bravo Company 1-20 Infantry will be air moved into the area at 1400hrs, to look for 4 US POW and 30 ARVN POW 4th Battalion 3rd Infantry will be in control. Bravo Company 1-20th will be OPCON to the 4th 3 Infantry. Bravo Company moved to LZ Liz BS705355. At 1215hrs Brigade Intelligence Agent reporting B-2 rating at grid BS748444 last night 4 US POW’s and 30 ARVN POW with VC guards with AK 47 were in area at DATE/TIME 010500 carrying rice and fish each man with 2 bags moving on a direct route to BS727396. They are expected to move to BS727396 and are expected to move BS7037 and stay through the daytime. Personnel in Back PJ including prisoners, appeared to be in good health. All US personnel are Caucasian and the ARVN were from the Duc Pho District. 1 ARVN POW said they came from Nui Can Vo, vicinity BS7035. US personnel are either captured along time ago, since they were not killed or detained in POW Camp, 15 days ago the same person with same mission did the same thing only with fewer guards. Charlie Company 4-3 Infantry and Bravo Company 1-20 Infantry will be air moved into that area at 1400hrs and Colonel Barlow will be at LZ San Juan Hill in a short time 4-3 Infantry will have over all charge of the operation. At 1445hrs 1505hrs Bravo Company 1-20 Infantry and last LZ at 1530hrs LZ grid BS701393 and BS714378, and Charlie Company LZ at BS702388. At 1800hrs Bravo Company locations 1st Platoon at BS713382, 2nd Platoon at BS713382 and Bravo Company is conducting Search and Sweep operation and setting up a blocking position with Day Ambushes.

 

Charlie Company
August 1, 1970

At 1306hrs Charlie Company requested a routine Dust Off for 1 Vietnamese Child with a wound of 2 fingers shot off the Dust Off is completed at 1415hrs. He says was shot by the VC 4 days ago. At 1735hrs Charlie Company reports we have 2 new mechanical ambushes at BS714584 and BS708584. Charlie Company continued to work with RF and PF elements with multiply ambushes out tonight. Charlie Company reports for Day Operations detained 6 males and one female and turn over to the Military Intelligence.

 

Delta Company
August 1, 1970

At 0645hrs Delta Company the 34 element is moving to BS751368, the 36 element is moving to BS759559, the 70 and 42 elements is moving to BS752573. The 35 element is at BS743566, the 32 element’s Day Logger is at BS742562 and the 52 elements Day Logger is at BS752575 as Delta Company continued their saturation patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0823hrs Delta Company 32 in vicinity of BS756588 picked up one male detainee name Nguyen Thanh, age 65 and wearing all black. The list shows he is an Association team leader (3 years ago) and a guerilla of Minh Tan Hamlet, Duc head Viie, Mo Duc District. The Delta 55 and 56 have one male detainee, Anme Nguyen Dong, age 56, wearing a purple top and black bottom, and one male, Nguven Thea, 55 and wearing a purple top and black bottom. Also one male Pham Tet, age 52, and wearing a white top and purple bottom and one female, Dinh Thy, age 28 wearing all black. All personnel on this list were picked up at the same grid as above. Reference: The male detainee, Nguyen Thanh, He gave the name of Le Dem, age 45, who is a hamlet Chief and tax collector, the hamlet is unknown. Nguyen Phan, age 18 is a guerilla who has an AK-47. At 1545hrs Delta Company air strike found numerous craters, grid BS745567 said mangrove really destroyed, results negative finding except for fresh footprints. At 1600hrs Delta Company 34 asked for an EOD team and it was there and bomb was destroyed. We are also checking for any other explosives. At 1640hrs Delta Company 54 found one 250-500 pound bomb and EOD team is blowing it in place at BS745568. At 1710hrs Delta Company at BS752730 we need an urgent Dust Off for one Vietnamese male, age 25, dressed in black shorts, who has his right leg blown off. He stepped on his own booby trap. The Chieu Hoi at Delta Command Post says he is definitely VC and his name is Muoi Oi (he was a friend of the Chieu Hoi) Military Intelligence was informed to meet the Dust Off completed at 1730hrs.

 

Echo Company
August 1, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 4.2 Platoon reports Scheduled Fires 10 for a total expended of 8 HE and 13 Illumination. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon will continue their Security Mission for the 1-20 Infantry (Jump Command Post).
