Headquarters and Headquarter Company
September 18, 1971

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Siberia and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0715hrs S-4 Resupply Bird is on station Hornet 27 tail # 640. At 0730hrs 1-20 Infantry Dolphin 23AMC Bird is on station for Combat Assault of Charlie Company and at 0805hrs 1st Platoon PZ LZ Siberia and 1st and last LZ at 0850hrs at AT954227. At 1300hrs 1-20 Infantry Slow Motions is on station at this time. At 1500hrs Slow Motion 3 is breaking station at this time. At 1720hrs 1-20 Infantry at LZ Siberia a friendly fire in the hole caused a superficial check wound to an EM (SH135) from Tango Element. EM was treated and released to duty at this location. He was standing approximately 120 meters for the explosive. At 1820hrs Received 20 incoming 82mm mortar initiated Red Alert, 2 each on position 4 between Bunkers and 8 in wire and 3 outside the wire. At 1822hrs reached 100% all personnel in position 1 US WIA reported light chest wound, ARVN Artillery on Siberia reports 3 WIA, 1 KIA. US Artillery on Siberia spotted mortar flashes at AT945225. At 1828hrs Requested Urgent Dust Off with guns. At 1828hrs fired counter mortar on 945225, and Heip Duc reported mortar flashes at AT944225. At 1829hrs Placed LZ West on 100% Alert. At 1830hrs Casualties check revealed 5 additional US lightly wounded not requiring Dust Off, Dust Off 54 and Sabre 71 is on station. At 1855hrs 20 personnel reported moving south to north at AT905228 and Helix 25 is on station and requested Air Strike on AT945225. At 1925hrs Nighthawk 37 is on station. At 1947hrs Nighthawk 37 received 2 rounds red tracer from southwest while checking south side of LZ Siberia. At 1948hrs Nighthawk reported 1 individual NVA black on black in rock approximately 70 meters from wire engaged with results unknown will check at first light. At 1950hrs LZ Karen reported 3 rounds 82mm mortar rounds received with results 2 civilian WIA. At 2020hrs Helix 25 has engine trouble and broke station, negative Air Strike. At 2030hrs 1-20 Infantry LZ Siberia and West back on 50% Alert at this time. Legend: 1st Platoon 78, 2nd Platoon 55.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for Chu Lai.

 

Alpha Company
September 18, 1971

At 0850hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon check out tunnels at AT889259 and found no recent activity and at 1135hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon found a booby trap with a pressure release with 3 to 8’ of trip wire to old Illumination canister not on a trial. At 1400hrs Alpha Company 2nd is located at checkpoint 3 at AT877265. At 1630hrs Alpha Company is moving to their Night Defense Position. At 1930hrs Alpha Company in there Night Defense Position at AT893264.

 

Bravo Company
September 18, 1971

Bravo Company continued their Security Mission for LZ West. At 1820hrs LZ Siberia received 20 incoming 82mm mortar rounds imitated a Red Alert, 2 on positions and 5 each between bunkers and wire and 3 outside wire. At 1828hrs Heip Duc reports mortar flashed at AT944225 and 1829hrs LZ West is on 100%. At 1950hrs LZ Karen reported 3 rounds of 82mm mortar fire results in 2 Civilians WIA, and at 2030hrs LZ West back on 50% Alert.

 

Charlie Company
September 18, 1971

At 0805hrs Charlie Company conducts a Combat Assault to grid AT954227 and at 0920hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon while on patrol at AT952227 found a 105mm round with trip wire it was blown in place. At 1702hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon clean a PZ at AT952222 as Charlie Company closed back on to LZ Siberia and their Security Mission.

 

Delta Company
September 18, 1971

At 0830hrs Delta Company 1st Platoon M Patrol is on the move to their Patrol Base. At 1935hrs Delta Company have established their Night Defense Position and at 2000hrs Delta Company found 5 NVA entrenching tools in their Night Defense Position at AT863246.

 

Echo Company
September 18, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Siberia, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 1500hrs Recon is moving out. At 1935hrs Recon reports in their Night Defense Ambush at AT864246 and AT836245. SP4 Michael A. Dean was attached to the 3rd Field Hospital.
