Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0906hrs Brigade 20 has arrived at this location LZ Liz. At 0930hrs Engineer at 0730hrs at 0730hrs at grid BS752675 a D7 hit an antipersonnel mine made of approximately 5 pounds explosive, negative damage. At 0745hrs and grid BS751680 the D7 hit another booby trap a command detonated of 10 pounds explosive. The crater was 2’ X 3’. At 0810hrs and at grid BS751684 a D7 again hit a booby trap made of approximately 10 pounds of explosive, with negative damages and left a crater of 2’ X 3’. At 0935hrs Helix 03 checked out grid BS745368 with negative findings. At 1545hrs 26 Engineer At 1215hrs at BS749677 D7 Caske Bushel 14 element hit a booby trap containing 20 to 25 pounds of explosive, 2 tracker pads and tracker connecting pin blown off. At 1425hrs at BS752681 D7 Casko Bushel 14 element hit a booby containing 25 pounds of explosive result 3 tracker pads blown off. At 1515hrs at BS748684 D7 hit a booby trap containing 15 pounds explosive with negative damage. At 1752hrs 26 Engineer reports a total 80 hours, cleared 150 acres (500X800) BS745675 to BS752675 to BS745682 to BS752682, destroyed 10 bunkers and 6 booby taps, found and destroyed 1 each 5" naval round, used 750 gallons fuel, 5 pounds C-4, 10 D7 operational and 1 D7 deadline with broken track, 1 CEV operational and 1 AC operational and 1 M548 operational. At 2316hrs MACV Mo Duc received from Major Witt: a source from special branch of National Police (a double agent) reports that LTC Minh, who is a NVA officer has 20 VC (five females) at grid BS716565, all are local force VC except for the LTC. They are in this area for about 7 days to obtain information on the 4 ARVN Regiment. The 4 Regiment knows the name of these agents, the area has 4 houses, 30 meters apart, never spending 2 consecutive nights in the same house, intelligence is rated B-1 more information to come from Mo Duc. At 2330hrs MACV Mo Duc reference 3 VC captured today by Alpha Company 1-20 Infantry, 1 is a hamlet security guard at Kim Giao BS774432. 1 is a VC who rallied to ARVN side and now a deserter. 1 is a hamlet guerrilla. Report that 10 more VC in the area, 5 to 6 months ago some NVA came to Kim Giao to get rice. Have not returned, also that there is a 250 pound rice cache in area, that is the 1 Alpha Company 1-20 Infantry found and destroyed and will continued to question, also 3 other detainees questioned and released. Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 0905hrs Bud Pad Re supply Bravo Company the same as yesterday, Delta Company 24 element is at BS750582, the 34 element is at BS753574, the 26 element is at BS776581 and the Engineer at BS752669. At 2224hrs Charlie Company Rear was informed of the contact with and fact SSGT Grady W. Cook was evac to Chu Lai from 4-3 Infantry (See Charlie Company for details).
Alpha Company

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 1647hrs Alpha Company had a Combat Assault 1st LZ Cold 1637hrs and 2nd LZ Cold 1645hrs. At 1715hrs Alpha Company at grid BS768425 a Vietnamese discovered a tunnel 41/2 ‘X 3’ checking it now 2 M-16 magazines were found in plastic bags in very good condition. At 1815hrs Alpha Company 21 element at BS768428 found buried 100 pounds of polished rice from last harvest, rice was destroyed At 1815hrs Alpha Company 21 found a tunnel captured 3 VCS, 1 blue shorts age 27, 1 blue/white age 31 and 1 in all blue age 18. They were a hamlet security chief there, a guerilla, ARVN deserter and a VC liaison also found documents, blacklist and gauze’s. At 1835hrs Alpha Company at 768428 the 21 element found buried in the ground 100 pounds of polished rice from last harvest and buried in a plastic bag. The rice was destroyed. Have 3 female detainees with no ID, ages 20-25 dressed in black and white. They are suspected VC and will go to Duc Pho MACV.
Bravo Company

Bravo Company continued their joint Operations with PF and RF units on their Hamlet Pacification and security of Highway 1. At 0745hrs Bravo Company the 27 element is closed at BS768609 and the 38 element is closed at BS747666. At 0830hrs Bravo Company at BS707622 requested on Urgent Dust Off for a PF had a hand frag go off in his hand, from 151 PF platoon, completed at 0845hrs. Bravo Company used multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1050hrs Bravo Company the 26 element is moving out to BS688608. At 1200hrs Bravo Company the 26 element has closed at BS707622. At 1732hrs Bravo Company the 37 element is at checkpoint 2 at BS756652, the 28 element is at checkpoint 4 at BS712631, with new patrol for the 37 element tomorrow BS752650 at 1705hrs. At 2015hrs Bravo Company the 38 snake is moving out to BS720635 and the 26 element is cancelled due to lack of commo at BS682604.
Charlie Company

Charlie Company was OPCON to the 4-3 Infantry. Charlie Company continued to conduct Search and Clear Operations along with Day Ambushes using Mechanical Ambushes. At 0930hrs Charlie Company is located at BS606515 and Charlie Company at 1405hrs found 1 Bunker contained 1 US entrenching tool, bunker appears not recently used, no tracks or tails in area, destroyed Bunker. At 1725hrs Charlie Company is located at BS606515 and at 2040hrs located at BS601516 received small arms fire from 200 meters which results in 1 WIA and Dust Off was completed at 2115hrs to Chu Lai engaged area with Artillery with unknown results, Guns ships where scrambled to cover the Dust Off. At 2224hrs Charlie Company called for a Dust Off for 1 US WIA, shot in back and shoulder by a sniper fire 6-8 rounds 200 meters west of snake location at BS602516, firing Red Leg checked with negative finding. THE US was evac to Chu Lai Name SSG Cook time of incident was 2040hrs, (SSGT Grady W. Cook) evac to 27 Surgical with gunshot back possible puncture left lung
Delta Company
July 18, 1970
At 0617hrs Delta Company the 55 element is at checkpoint 1 at BS768590, 56 are at checkpoint 1 at BS773577 and the 36 element is moving out to BS758573. At 0820hrs Delta Company at BS756567 the 36 element was in a day ambush position when the spotted 2 enemy, 1 with weapon. There where 3 PF waiting for them to enter the kill zone when a PF opened fire they got one KIA. The enemy with weapon evaded northeast. The 36 is in pursuit, KIA is 17-18, no ID, or papers. We also had return fire. At 1750hrs Delta Company 56 pick-up 1 female detainee, PF say she is VC 25 years, Black bottom, purple top, Hame is Nguyen Thi BA Wold and is staying with the 56 element till able to evacuate to MACV Mo Duc in the morning. At 0932hrs Delta Company reports their Day Logger position 54 at BS776581, 24 at BS750582 and 34 at BS753574. At 1610hrs Delta Company 24 element has a OP at BS751616. At 1735hrs Delta Company the 28 element is at checkpoint 1 at BS749582. The 26 element saw an undetermined number of enemy 1000 meters to the north of BS745600, they area checking it out now with negative findings. The 37 element is at checkpoint 2 at BS760573. At 1750hrs Delta Company 56 element is at checkpoint 3 at BS767575. They also picked up 1 female detainee. PF say she is VC, 25 years old, black bottom purple top. Her name is Nguyen Thi BA. She has negative ID and is staying with 26 elements to be evac to MACV Mo Duc in the morning. At 2030hrs Delta Company the 54, 14, 20 elements are in their Night Defense Position at BS777578. At 2044hrs Recon Platoon reports the 21 element is located at BS781406, and the 22 element is moving out to their snake location.
Echo Company

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0600hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Fire Mission 1 for a total expended of 17 HE rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0550hrs Recon Platoon at BS735443 is moving into LZ Liz notified Alpha Company bunker- line. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry.
