Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 18, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 009hrs Radar sighted 4 to 5 personnel that where moving west at BS721431 with negative clearance due to the proximity of Recon, and at 0016hrs 5 to 6 stationary personnel were sighted at BS722428 with negative clearance due to the proximity of Recon. At 0032hrs Radar Spotted 5 to 6 personnel that where sighted moving to the west at BS718426 with negative clearance due to the proximity of Recon. At 0040hrs 5 to 6 personnel were sighted at BS716426 that where moving west and at 0107hrs 5 to 6 personnel were sighted at BS711431 that where moving north. At 0455hrs A Visual Recon Team was requested for grid BS7143 with the radar tracking, Recon Ambush and the Artillery and the 4.2 fire making it a priority mission. Colonel Lynch took a special interest in the mission placing a priority on it. CPT Robinson, 11 Brigade has a Visual Recon scheduled and confirmed that a Visual Recon Team would check the area on Command Push and Recon informed at 180315hrs August 1970. At 0615hrs Primo 3 is on station for the first light Visual Recon and had negative findings. At 1530hrs Alpha Company reports the extraction of the downed chopper from BS714567 was completed. At 1609hrs S-5 VIP program at BS725538 purchased 1 60mm mortar round (lot MA 2-16), many other ammo all the items where purchased for 1250 Vietnamese $. At 2000hrs 1-20 Infantry at an unknown hour on the night of 17-18 August 1970 an unidentified RD Cadre was assassinated by the VC and his body was left by the side of highway 1, in the vicinity BS758492. Mo Duc MACV was informed of the location by Battalion S-5, but they have no uncovered any more information that listed above. Further details will be reported as received by TOC 1-20 Infantry. At 2010hrs Radar spotted 5 to 6 personnel moving west with negative clearance due to the proximity of Recon Platoon.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
August 18, 1970

Alpha Company will use multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation today. At 0900hrs we request a routine Dust Off for one Vietnamese male with skin disease. At 1405hrs Alpha Company the 72element request an urgent Dust Off for 3 US with multiple frag wounds to the body at BS714567. They received an M-79 round from the northwest at 200 meters. The resupply chopper was on the ground and M-79 round hit the chopper, ETA 10-15 and completed at 1415hrs. (Alpha Company reports personnel SGT TATE and SGT Putman.) The LZ was secured 100 meters when the chopper was hit on the top and it caught on fire, but everyone evac safely. At 1530hrs the extraction of down helicopter from BS714567 is completed. At 1715hrs Alpha Company 72 element received 1 M-79 rounds inside the perimeter with negative casualties, the round came from the west approximately 150 meter at BS715565. The entire element is sweeping the area with negative finding. Alpha Company reports treated a Bravo Company 23 Medical SGT Frank W. Tate with Frag wound to right shoulder and SGT John W. Putman with frag wound to chest. Treated and Released in the field where SP4 Willian L Bruneau with frag would to right shoulder, SP4 George W. Wizer with frag wound to chest and SP4 John M. Ward with frag wounds to chest and legs.

 

Bravo Company
August 18, 1970

At 1845hrs Bravo Company the 72 element spotted six people dressed in black crossing a bridge at BS699572. They evaded across the bridge into a tree line which was engaged with artillery but had negative results.

 

Charlie Company
August 18, 1970

Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz along with the Access Road. At 1943hrs Charlie Company the Access Road elements are in location.

 

Delta Company
August 18, 1970

Delta Company is at LZ Bronco for their retraining or their Stand Down at LZ Bronco.

 

Echo Company
August 18, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0450hrs 4.2 Mortar Platoon reports Fire Missions 5 for a total expended HE 47, 3 Illumination and C/S rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0900hrs Recon Platoon we are moving to LZ Liz. At 1925hrs Recon Platoon the 52 element is moving to BS710437 and the 53 element is at BS713427. At 2015hrs Recon 53 element reports their location at BS723427.
