Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0430hrs Saber 47 in Nighthawk Box 61, negative findings, going to NH Box 64 to check out radar sighting vicinity BS802455, BS797456, negative findings, broke station at 0553hrs. At 0600hrs LZ Liz Bunker Line inspection # 6, 7, 8 all satisfactory Bunker # 9 all asleep. At 0640hrs LZ Liz Access Road called, Coke kids brought Vietnamese civilian female 45-50 years old to bunker # 5 has Multiple Frag Wounds to face and body, sustained from action last night (we have negative knowledge there of). Request Dust Off at 0641hrs and completed at 0708hrs Bird #88, VC told her to come outside and they shot her. At 0805hrs LATE SPOT MACV Duc Pho, at 161710, at grid BS784434, PF Platoon 174 observed 1 VC with weapon moving to the southwest, engaged with small arms resulting in 1 VC KIA, 1 M-16 CIA, negative friendly casualties, not US confirmed. At 0846hrs LZ Liz Access Road is now clear. At 2036hrs 1-20 Infantry Mechanical Ambushes out: Alpha 9, Charlie 3, Delta 6, and Recon 1 for a total 19 out. At 2130hrs LZ Liz Bunker Line Inspection: #1 had no 1 on the bunker, # 17 did not know password or Platoon Leader, # 16 did not know password and had no landline or radio, # 15 did not know password and had no landline. Also # 14 did not know password and had no landline, thought to have 4 claymores, only had 2, #13 did not know password and had no commo, # 9 did knew password, location of claymores, had no commo, # 8 knew pas word, location of claymores, had no commo. Legend: 1st Platoon 58, 2nd Platoon 16, 3rd Platoon 83, 4th Platoon 42, CO-07.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
May 17, 1971

Alpha Company continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 1010hrs Alpha Company Command Post bought 1 105 HE round, 1 M79 HE round, 1-16 bandoleer with ammo, 1 105mm firecracker round, paid 4 Vietnamese child 3 boxes of C Rations, and blew the ammo in place. At 1415hrs Alpha Company 3rd Platoon patrol is moving to BS703475. At 1457hrs 2nd Platoon vicinity BS739396 requested routine Dust Off for 1 scout dog with tropical disease. The Dog was bleeding from the noses, Bird #88 completed at 1538hrs. At 1457hrs Alpha Company Command Post element while in Patrol Base bought 1 fuse bomb and 2 firecracker rounds, from 2 coke kids 7-9 with 5 packs of cigarettes out of accessory packs at BS758386. At 1650hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon found one case of 105 fuses concealed in a hedgerow, one can was missing from the case and it was found nearby believed to be a booby trap. The 105 fuses were rusted and in poor condition, they were blown in place. Also found was a piece of paper, adjacent to a trail in a bush. The Kit Carson Scout says the paper is a price listing for buying rice and other articles in village. The paper will be back hauled to LZ Liz tomorrow. At 1713hrs Alpha Company 2nd Platoon patrol vicinity BS742401 found 18 CS canisters approximately 30-40 days old on a trail. One canister was still good and will be back hauled tomorrow. The 2nd Platoon Patrol thinks they could have been used for an ambush. At 1946hrs Alpha Company all elements in Night Defense Position Command Post, 3rd and 1st Platoons at BS758389 with 2nd Platoon at BS738394.

 

Bravo Company
May 17, 1971

Bravo Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0600hrs LZ Liz Bunker Line inspection # 6, 7, 8 all satisfactory Bunker # 9 all asleep. At 0640hrs LZ Liz access road called, coke kids brought female who had multiple frag wounds to face and body sustained from action and requested Dust Off at 0641hrs completed at 0708hrs, Bird #88. At 2130hrs LZ Bunker inspection #1 had no I on bunker, # 17 did not know password or Platoon Leader, # 16 did not know password and had no landline or radio, # 15 did not know password and had no landline. Also # 14 did not know password and had no landline, thought to have 4 claymores, only had 2, #13 did not know password and had no commo. Also # 9 knew password, location of claymores, had no commo, # 8 knew pass word, location of claymores, had no commo and found unsatisfactory corrections are being made.

 

Charlie Company
May 17, 1971

Charlie Company continued to use Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0852hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon in patrol Base vicinity BS681516, 1st Platoon patrol is moving out to BS669524. At 0925hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon patrol closed vicinity BS712492. At 1417hrs Charlie Company 2nd Platoon and Command Post elements have linked up with 1st Platoon at 1st Platoon Patrol Base at BS700448. At 1730hrs Charlie Company Command Post found a 60mm round material vicinity BS681517, it was not a booby trap was old and rusty. Charlie Company at 1755hrs vicinity BS670530, 2nd Platoon while on patrol spotted 7 VC wearing black on black approximately 150 meters away engaged with small arms fire and received 2-3 sounds of return small arms fire. The VC evaded to the northwest, 2nd Platoon sweep the area and found 1 canteen, 2 pair of HO Chi Minh sandals, 2 bush hats and 2 bags of snails. At 1952hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon in their Night Defense Position at BS679521, 1st Platoon ambush at BS678524, 2nd Platoon, Command Post at BS674527 with 3 Mechanical Ambush out. SSGT Andrew H. Adam was attached to the 3rd Field Hospital (11B40).

 

Delta Company
May 17, 1971

Delta Company continued using Patrol Bases and multiple patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0655hrs Delta Company 3rd and 4th Platoons and Command Post are now in their Patrol Base at BS700474. At 1245hrs Delta Company 3rd Platoon request routine Dust Off for 1 US with heat exhaustion, line #F8737, Bird #88 completed 1359hrs vicinity BS700474. At 1447hrs Delta Company while on patrol Command Post found a rock formation cave, vicinity BS699473, with old camouflage around it. The cave is capable of holding 6-8 people, old campfire but negative signs of recent use. At 1943hrs Delta Company Command Post, 3rd and 4th Platoon in their Night Defense Position at BS704477 and at 1954hrs Delta Company 1st and 2nd Platoon in Night Defense Position at BS674527 with 6 Mechanical Ambush out.

 

Echo Company
May 17, 1971

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. At 0723hrs Recon is in their Patrol Base at BS703427. At 0910hrs Recon sighted 3 VC, 1 with AK 47 vicinity BS703424, engaged and chasing them at this time 200meters southwest, believed to have these personnel in a bunker, (blood trails leading up to it) are destroying bunker at this time. Enemy threw grenade out at Recon, Recon engaged with LAW, grenades, and small arms fire, have 2 VC KIA and 1 AK47 CIA. At 1939hrs Recon is moving to their Night Defense Position at BS715436.
