Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0930hrs Primo 5 Spotted 3 personnel under a bush. He picked up our Commanding Officer. Delta Company is maneuvering against them now. 1 evaded south they are pursuing them now, have 1 WIA momason age 35 wounded in shoulder. The bullet is still in her requested a routine Dust Off. They have 2 male detainees around the age of 30 years old, monason had 50 piasters. She was dressed in black pants and blue shirt. The males were in all black. The detainees have small packs with enough rice and tobacco to last them for 4-6 days. 1 of the personnel said he thought 1 man threw a weapon into the river. They looked for it but came up negative findings. At 1725hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC S-5 Report Psychological operations were conducted at the following girds BS7060, BS6963, BS7263, BS6933, BS7266 with 100,000 leaflets at VIP targets, grid BS7440 with 28, 000 leaflets targeted at C-19 Chieu Hoi and at grid BS7360 with 28,000 leaflets targeted at C-19 Chieu Hoi. Brigade night broadcasts were targeted at C-35 and C-19 at grids BS7467 and BS7559. 1 Vietnamese child was evac by the S-5 section to 23 Med at LZ Bronco for extreme sickness of unknown origin. At 2050hrs TMF Fire Mission time 2009hrs, String 66, 4 personnel moving northwest to southeast, 2 miles per hour, metal confirmation, shot at 2019hrs 20 VT 105 artillery and repeat at 2024hr shot at 2027hrs 6 VT 105 artillery and at 2032hrs repeat shot 2036hrs 10 VT 105 artillery rounds. Alpha Company
July 17, 1970
Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0910hrs Alpha Company is leaving LZ at this time to sweep area vicinity BS751502. At 1115hrs Alpha Company found a small Ville at grid BS774489, have 1 enemy who civilians say had went back to the side of the enemy, Vietnamese civilians said 10 persons stayed their last night and found total of 23 reinforced bunkers with 13 connecting hootches need more demolitions. Personnel who stayed there last night all had weapons, found a tunnel opening there 1’ X 1 1/3’ they are checking now. Detainee dressed in purple with a straw hat, he admitted that he was a Chieu Hoi and a VC in HUE. They have 27 detainees, they are questioning them to decide who to keep and who to let go. At 1140hrs Alpha Company we just took 4 to 6 automatic weapons fire from 300 meters to their northeast. They are checking the area out and have 6 detainees, 4 females and 2 males. 1 female in blue and purple is about 45 years old and the other 3 females were all black and were 55 to 60 years old. The 2 males were all black and were 55 to 60 years old. The 2 males are 70 years old and wearing all black. All had negative ID and will take them to Mo Duc our location BS776492. At 1200hrs Alpha Company 35 element spotted 3 enemies at a distance of 150 meters, 1 person had an AK 47 the other enemy 2 were carrying weapons (unknown type). The 35 element maneuvered toward enemy but the 3 personnel evaded. The 54 element is moving out to reinforce the 34 element. The elements checked the area with negative findings and while returning received automatic weapons fire from 6 to 10 personnel, the pink team was requested. At 1255hrs Alpha Company the 29 element is receiving small arms fire from the northeast and north at 500 meters. Request a pink team, 6 to 10 enemy with automatic and semi automatic weapons, sharks on station now. Many well-camouflaged bunkers and sunken trails, these bunkers are large and well reinforced. Sharks saw cooking utensils that looked like they had been used recently, also some sandals, with more bunkers to the south. The 34 element picked up some sandals, kaki shirt with bullet holes and bloodstains at BS774489. At BS784495 the 55 element found an old campsite where the found 1 empty M-16 magazine, 1 stove with rice on it, canteens and cup, 1 baseball cap, and 1 M-16 can with rice. The 34 element found 22 bunkers altogether with rice. The 34 element found 22 bunkers altogether 10’ X 10’ and 3 small tunnels. Alpha Company the 55 element found parts of an M-16, one M-1 carbine, 200 pounds of rice and detainee 33 personnel sent them to Military Intelligence. At 1751hrs Alpha Company has closed on the Hill (LZ LIZ).
Bravo Company

Bravo Company continued their joint Operations with PF and RF units on their Hamlet Pacification and security of Highway 1. At 0641hrs the Bravo Company 36 element closed on BS747666. The 58 element is on the Red Ball waiting to line up with the engineers. At 0702hrs Bravo Company the 37 element is at checkpoint 2 at BS762632. The 57 element is closed at BS752577. At 0755hrs Bravo Company the 28 element is receiving sniper fire from BS733629, BS739632 and BS739628 while they were at BS735616, they are working their 81mm mortars now with negative results. At 1040hrs Bravo Company the 28 element is in location at BS749621 to BS743613. The 37 element is at checkpoint 2 at BS762362, have negative communications with the 58 element at BS718595. At 1545hrs Bravo Company at BS739632 the 28 element is receiving heavy sniper fire 5-6 snipers about 400 meters away. At 1721hrs Bravo Company at BS726600 the Bravo 54 element aid man was wounded in the left wrist. The fire came from 1-2 snipers about 300 automatic weapons rounds fire. At 1740hrs at BS732598 the Bravo Company 56 and 57 element have made contact with 3-5 enemy about 200 meters away, sweep of the area 1-M-16 rifle captured with much blood, 1 bush hat, 3 water proof bags (blood on them). Also found were 3 dud 81mm rounds, 1US pistol belt, 6 US M-16 magazines full. At 1915hrs Follow Up Bravo Company at 1700hrs the 56 and 57 elements took sniper fire from grid BS726600 from 2 enemies. They evaded to wood line BS732598, engaged heavy contact from 3 to 5 enemies at 200 meters. Direction 1600 mils direction and they broke contact and entered wood line where they found 1 bloody M-16 #891891, 1 US bush hat with hole in it, 1 bra, 1 US pistol belt. Also 3 water proof bags bloody, 5 to 6 M-16 magazines, 1 US medic received a graze wound on the left wrist and Dust Off was not required. No artillery, ground Company Commander did not wish it.
Charlie Company

Charlie Company was OPCON to the 4-3 Infantry. At 0810hrs Charlie Company is located at BS603543 and by 1240hrs Charlie Company is located at BS612522 as they continued to conduct Search and Clear Operations along with Day Ambushes and using Mechanical Ambushes. At 1510hrs Charlie Company found 1 NVA Poncho, 6 Straw Hats, and 4 sleeping position 3X3X2, 1 tunnel 7’ long in the side of a Ravine. Trail leading in weeds and a 2week old trail running north and southwest, did destroy everything. At 1630hrs Charlie Company at BS601508 found a sign, 3’X10’ bunker will destroy Bunker and back haul the sign. At 2040hrs Charlie Company established their Night Defense Position at BS603514 and will establish 3 night ambushes using Mechanical Ambushes.
Delta Company

At 0621hrs Delta Company the 55 element is moving out at checkpoint 1 at BS768590, all night ambushes have closed at BS759560. The 27 patrol is moving out to BS759588. At 0820hrs the 20 with 54 and 14 elements are moving to Day Logger at BS775577. The 26 element is moving out to BS763573. The 34 element is moving out to BS763573. The 34 element is in location at BS752577. At 0740hrs Delta Company at 763583 the 27 element requested and Urgent Dust Off for 1 US who tripped a booby trap. Booby trap consisted of a hand frag with a trip wire placed in the hedgerow. The #41D Name (SP4 Ronnie Doss) multiple frag wounds, vicinity BS768572 completed at completed at 0810hrs. Report on man dusted off, he had a fractured arm and superficial wounds, will be OK, taken him to Chu Lai. At 0755hrs Delta Company at grid BS754565 the 36 element spotted 15 persons, half armed: engaged them, checked the area and found one blood trail continuing to check the Area. At 1025hrs Report on man dusted off he had a fractured arm and superficial wounds, will be OK they have taken him to Chu Lai. At 1805hrs Delta Company vicinity BS768572 the 20 element captured 1 detainee at Day Logger sight. He was male and 43 years old, wearing black bottoms and purple top. His name is Le Chen, no ID, he has a couple of wounds, will evacuate tomorrow on back haul to Bronco. SP4 Rodney Doss was evac to the 91st Evac Hospital.
Echo Company

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0530hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Fire Mission 3 for a total expended of 133 HE and 5 WP rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0615hrs Recon Platoon the 21 element has closed on LZ Liz. At 1945hrs Recon Platoon is leaving LZ Liz Wire for BS735443. At 2041hrs Recon all snake is location 21 at BS735443, 22 at BS730436 and the 23 at BS727450.
