Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0005hrs LZ Liz IOS we spotted 1 light at grid BS739432 we engaged the target with 9 HE 4.2 mortar and at 0035hrs IOS we spotted 4 lights at grid BS770462, we were given negative clearance due to the close proximity of Bravo Company. At 0330hrs Radar sighted 5 to 7 stationary personnel at grid BS732457 and we engaged with rounds HE 155 artillery and at 0455hrs IOS we have 1 stationary light at grid BS807445, we expended 18 HE 105 artillery rounds of on the target. At 0910hrs 1-20 to Charlie Company prepare two PZ for pick up at 1300hrs for a Combat Assault to 1^st LZ at BS710469 and 2^nd LZ at BS717467. There will be 83 EM and a ACL of 6 This is a reaction to intelligence that there is a VCI meeting in the vicinity of the LZ, make sure the re supply before the Combat Assault. At 1011hrs 1-20 Infantry the Division Commander arrived at LZ Liz and left at 1020hrs. At 1545hrs Helix (FAC) 33 we are putting in an air Strike on grid BS767513. Bomb Damage Assessment 10 structures destroyed, 6 structures damage 50 meters of trench line and 20 fighting position destroyed. At 1710hrs Helix (FAC) we spotted an automatic weapon’s position with a tunnel entrance 10 meters to the southeast at grid BS767363. At 1720hrs Brigade Intelligence reports: B2 or C2 (2sources), that there are 40 NVA and 40 VC at grids BS810444 and BS813440. They are moving out tonight to mortar Bronco or attack Tra Cau. At 1850hrs Sharks we are checking the IOS target of 8 personnel with packs at grid BS739414, Shark 9 broke station at 1913hrs. At 1920hrs 1-20 Infantry re supply tomorrow and chow will be at 1500hrs. At 1951hrs LZ Liz Radar sighted 4 to 5 personnel moving to the southeast at BS761440, we will fire 15 He of 4.2 mortar rounds at the target. At 2115hrs IOS sighted 4 to 5 (VC/NVA) at the grid BS745418, we engaged with 16 HE from the 105 artillery. At 21551hrs Radar sighted 8 to 10 stationary personnel at grid BS759379, negative clearance due to the close proximity of Delta Company and at 2230hrs IOS sighted 4 to 6 stationary personnel at grid BS864405, negative due to close proximity of Delta Company. At 2315hrs Radar sighted 8 to 10 stationary personnel at grid BS784495, negative clearance due to the close proximity of Recon.

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0616hrs Alpha Company the 07 element is moving to BS741424 and at 0630hrs Alpha Company 07 element passed checkpoint 2 with negative findings and we are en route to LZ Liz. At 0748hrs Alpha 07 has closed on LZ Liz. At 1920hrs Alpha Company the 47 element is moving to BS765427, the 28 element is moving to BS776441, the 46 element is moving to BS768438 and the 08 element is moving to BS768438.

Bravo Company
January 17, 1970

At 0557hrs Bravo Company the 26 element has closed on BS789417 and the 25 snake has closed on BS787424. At 0657hrs Bravo Company 46 closes on semi permanent position and the 06 element is moving back to the North Bridge at BS771431. At 0809hrs Bravo Company Gorilla element is moving to BS792435 and at 0840hrs reports checkpoint 1 at BS792435. At 1052hrs Gorilla element closed on BS786466. At 2030hrs Bravo Company the 26 element at BS794407 and the 07 element has been to BS776455 with negative results and we are now moving back to the south. At 2105hrs Bravo Company the 24 element got intelligence report from the Vietnamese that there are 30 VC at grid BS705407 and also at grid BS802443 also there are 30 personnel. There is and undetermined number of personnel at grid BS818426 because of the Intelligence the Bravo Company 51 and 15 PF will search and clear grids BS746401, BS809401 and BS805401 at 0530hrs Re request Artillery Pre at 0700hrs at gird BS810408. At 2207hrs Bravo Company the 07 element closed on the Twin Ville at BS776446.

Charlie Company
January 17, 1970

At 0613hrs Charlie Company the 27 and 28 snakes have closed on BS778404. At 0628hrs Charlie Company the 27 and 28 elements have closed on BS778404 and at 0654hrs the 08 element has closed on BS778404. At 0851hrs Charlie Company 04 is moving to BS767388. At 0910hrs (1-20^th Inf.) to Charlie Company Prepare two (2) PZ for pick up at 1300hrs, for Combat Assault to one LZ at BS710469 and one LZ at BS717467. There will be 83 EM and ACL of 6. This is a reaction to intelligence that there is a VCI meeting in the vicinity of the LZ. Accomplish the re supply before the Combat Assault. At 1120hrs Charlie Company 44 went on a visual Recon with the Engineers and spotted 4 VC/NVA evading but we were not able to engage due to the distance. There are numerous camouflaged hootches and bunkers. The 44 element says the bunkers cannot be seen from the air, the 44 element Kit Carson Scouts says that the area is heavily booby trap, and that the VC/NVA have put up signs telling that the area is heavily booby trap. At 1020hrs Charlie Company 44 routine Dust Off request: 1 pregnant Vietnamese was to be dusted off from BS764534 but the Utility pick her up and the Dust Off was cancelled. At 1320hrs the Combat Assault has been cancelled due to the weather and at 1355hrs, we are moving back to our Day logger at grid BS778404. All elements are at this location. At 1730hrs Charlie Company is moving to our Night Defense Position at BS774401 and at 1800hrs Charlie Company 44 we found a satchel charge made of a sandbag with explosives inside. There was a home made firing device, which had a string about 3" long, also contained some form as persistent C/S.

At 0746hrs Delta Company the 25 element checked out the area with negative results at BS742392, found dragged marks and blood trail. There were definitely people in the area after the 1 VC was wounded or killed we also found an impression of an SKS or AK47 but plate in the area. At 0938hrs Delta Company we are moving out at this time. At 1410hrs Delta Company for tonight are Command Post and Night Defense Position will be at BS756381, 25 snake is at BS748380, 44 Night Defense Position at BS741399, 45 snake is at BS740393, 04 Night Defense Position is at BS755394, and the 05 snake is at BS765391. At 1415hrs Delta Company found a base camp BS738383, there were 2 hootches inside of them and two more bunkers 500 meter down the hill from the hootches. We found one sandbag with 20 homemade Chi Com grenades, one 5gal can of Petna, 2 AK-47 rounds, one set of carpenter tools, inside a M-16 ammo box, one sledge hammer, one rice polishing mill, some US canteens and 2 M-17 US protective masks. The bunkers and hootches were destroyed. At 1615hrs Delta Company the 44 element Day Logger is at BS747391, 04 Day Logger is at BS756385 and the 21 Day Logger is at BS753375. At 1715hrs The Command Post is moving to our Night Defense Position at grid BS756381 and the 14 element is moving to BS755394. At 1835hrs Delta Company we are in our Night Defense Position at BS759378. At 1920hrs Delta Company the 44 element Night Defense Position is at BS741399, the 04 element Night Defense Position is at BS758396 and the 05 snake will be at BS760438. At 1950hrs Delta Company the 25 snake is moving to BS754377.

Echo Company
January 17, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0706hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Observed Mission 2 and Unobserved 1 for a total expended of 9 HE, 4 Illumination and 5 C/S rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0830hrs Recon the Little John element will be going on a patrol to BS787506 and at 0900hrs Little John is moving to BS787506. At 0920hrs Recon the Little John element spotted 4 VC evading at grid BS787506. They had 1 weapon and were dressed in Khaki type uniforms we took them under fire with negative results. We are pursuing them at this time and we also found a tunnel complex and request charges to blow it. Sharks are on station and are pursuing the evading VC. At 1215hrs Recon our present location is at BS782505 and we will move to BS783500. Our Night Defense Position will be at BS787495. Tomorrow we will work between BS787505 and we will move to BS783500. Our Night Defense Position will be at BS787495 and tomorrow we will work between BS787495. At 1216hrs Recon Platoon reports Warlord to check out grid BS788504 at 1430hrs. At 1535hrs Recon we picked up 1 Vietnamese detainee female and 2 Vietnamese children, they had no ID cards at grid BS782505. At 1600hrs Recon we destroyed 3 gardens at grid BS782505. At 1925hrs Recon we are in our Night Defense Position at BS787495. SP4 Robert D. Gee was attached to the 91^st Evac Hospital (11B20).
