Headquarters and Headquarter Company
December 17, 1970

Forward Area: (1-20 Infantry Headquarters) is located at LZ Liz and will continue to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0955hrs Primo 4 is on station for Command and Control Helicopter. At 1040hrs Primo 4 is breaking station at this time. At 1015hrs Helix 37 is on station working with Charlie Company and broke station at 1040hrs. At 1053hrs S-4 Dolphin 445 is on station for resupply. At 1250hrs 1-20 Infantry AMC Ship is on station, and Battalion Commander departed LZ Liz for Combat Assault. At 2040hrs 1-20 Infantry, LZ Liz, a Urgent Dust Off for 1 US believed to have an overdose of drugs. Blood pressure 182/800, previous record of Heart murmur, took 1 full bottle of Obesity. Name Goins, Dust Off complete at 2057hrs. At 2110hrs Q Company reports Chinook that was downed has been repaired and lifted off and headed for LZ Bronco. At 2115hrs Blue Ghost Black is on station checking Box 68, cleared by LT Lewis and Ghost broke station at 2130hrs with negative findings. Ghost Black informed us that Box 68 was given negative clearance by Division, Brigade knew of the negative clearance, but failed to inform us of this, this was the reason clearance was given for the Box. At 2132hrs Air Calvary Box 36X negative change, Box 66X upper left BS6775 east to coast, Lower Left BS7664, clear every night until cancelled. At 2301hrs Blue Ghost 40 is on station, diverted to BS797456. Radar sighting 10 to 15 personnel is doing some heavy work and spotted 2 suspected VC wearing black at BS707456. Engaged with Mini guns with result is 2 KIA. Blue Ghost 40 is breaking station to refuel at Duc Pho. At 2305hrs Blue Ghost Black is on station, requests clearance for box 71, cleared by LT Lewis. Blue Ghost Black is leaving Box 71 with negative findings, breaking station at this time. Legend: 1st Platoon 83-88, 2nd Platoon 33-38, 3rd Platoon 03-08, 4th Platoon 63-68 and CO 09.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
December 17, 1970

Alpha Company set up patrol bases and used saturation patrolling in their Area of Operation. Alpha Company 3rd Platoon is moving to check out contact area vicinity BS681535. At 0945hrs 3rd Platoon reference last nights contact on 13 at 1806hrs searched the contact area found 2 used 1st aid packs, and 1 bag of cooked rice at BS679534, rice was spoiled and had ants in it. At BS682539 they located a zigzag shaped trench approximately 2’ wide and 4-5 feet deep, running along the trail on which the bamboo markers were found. The trench disappeared into the hedgerow thicket. Alpha Company Command Post, 2nd and 4th Plat is at BS604550, 1st Platoon BS670563 with ambush BS675566, and BS677566, 2nd Platoon BS678552 and 3rd Platoon with ambush 680535, 676530. At 2247hrs Alpha Company 1st Platoon ambush spotted movement vicinity BS673565 proximity 3-400 meters to their west. Engaged with small arms and requested Illumination to check the area. Moved out at 2257hrs to check it out with negative finding, will check it again in the morning at first light. At 1530hrs Alpha Company reports Non Hostile Action SP4 John Collier was treated and released by Battalion Aid big toe left foot, moving 55 gal drum.

 

Bravo Company
December 17, 1970

At 0820hrs Bravo Company 2nd Platoon patrol is leaving LZ Liz for BS749442 and at 1115hrs 2nd Platoon moved to Recon area of contact vicinity BS749442 and detained 2 Vietnamese males age 20-57, wearing white and blue and all white. Both had ID, but they look questionable, brought to Liz and sent to Duc Pho. At 2040hrs, LZ Liz Urgent Dust Off for 1 US believed to have possible over dose of drugs. Blood pressure 182/800, previous record of heart murmurs, name Gains Completed 2057hrs.

 

Charlie Company
December 17, 1970

Charlie Company will continue their VIP program along with patrolling and sweeps in their Area of Operation. At 0810hrs Charlie Company 3rd Platoon is moving out for BS745288, 1st Platoon is at BS730420 and 2nd Platoon is at BS775364. At 1930hrs Charlie Company 1st Platoon ambushes BS725413, BS722415 and BS720420 with 2nd Platoon ambushes BS769372, BS778374 and with 3rd Platoon ambushes BS746398, BS746396 and BS749382.

 

Delta Company
December 17, 1970

At 0820hrs Delta Company 2nd Platoon patrol is moving out for BS749583. At 1015hrs Delta Company reports 2nd Platoon patrol checkpoint 1 is at BS749583 and checkpoint 2 is at BS754585. Delta Company approximately 1620hrs: I Vietnamese boy 15-16 years old was picked up by Artillery Battery CO on the Access road to Liz. The boy stated he was traveling with 1 GI from Delta Company 3rd Platoon, The soldier was away from his Platoon Patrol Base without permission. The boy continued by stating 2 VC jumped out from the side of the road and fired at the two of them. The US soldier was hit in the stomach with small arms fire, the boy was hit in the arm. The boy ran to Fire Support Base Liz and reported the above incident. Delta Company notified at 1650hrs to dispatch patrol ASAP to the above grid, Patrol moved to the area and found 1 KIA US from gunshot wound in the stomach with 1 M-16, 2 bandoleers of M-16 ammo missing and 2 M-67 Hand frag. At 1920hrs the 3rd Platoon vicinity of BS753458, area of US KIA, detained 9 Vietnamese all females, 6 where released and 3 are being detained to see if they knew any more about the incident. At 1935hrs Delta Company 4th Platoon Command Post BS737428, 1st Platoon BS733445 with ambush BS735432 and 3rd Platoon BS744445 with ambush at BS742453. Delta Company reports CPL GREGORY ALEN GYDESEN LISTED AS KHA Loyal COD gun shot wound to abdomen small arms fire.

 

Echo Company
December 17, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0707hrs Recon Platoon has closed on LZ Liz. Echo Company reports PFC Jesse Wade was evac to the 91st Evac Hospital (11C10) sick.
