Headquarters and Headquarter Company

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Thunder and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0930hrs MACV at group of MACV personnel will be cutting bamboo in area of BS859324. At 2242hrs MACV Duc Pho Police Chief return and report to Duc Pho District Chief, tonight VC will mortar District Compound and follow up with a ground attack, no attack on LZ Bronco is mentioned. At 2350hrs Division TOC Major Krebs reports the Americal meeting in the Americal Conference Room concerning Operation Champaign Grove, Meeting at DATE/TIME181400hrs.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company
August 17, 1968
At 0940hrs Alpha Company is located at BS832355. When 3 VC fired on Command Post, returned fire results 1 VC KIA, M-1 carbine CIA #427919, 2 magazines with ammo and 4 M-26 grenades CIA. Two VC evaded northwest and unit is pursuing. At 1200hrs Alpha Company located at BS832355At 1530hrs Alpha Company at BS827365 found a tunnel 3’ X 3’ opening, can stand up in it, had been used recently, searching tunnel with negative results. At 1900hrs Alpha Company moved into their Night Defense Position at BS800369 with ambushes at BS788373, BS790360 and BS800359. At 1910hrs Alpha Company is receiving fire from Duc Pho from the PF location.
Bravo Company
August 17, 1968
At 2344hrs Bravo Company 21 ambush at BS811308, ambush engaged 1 VC, results 1 VC KIA. He was approximately 25, wearing black PJ, had 2 M-26 hand grenades, 1 US pistol belt and 3 loaded M-16 magazines. At 1200hrs Bravo Company is located at BS838309 and using Search and Destroy operation in their Area of Operation. At 1612hrs Bravo Company is located at BS845295. At 1900hrs Bravo Company is in their Night Defense Position at BS845295 with ambushes at BS859299, BS861307, BS850285, BS842300 and BS832301. At 1940hrs Bravo Company at BS860305 engaged 1 VC evading, results I VC KIA, dressed in black. At 2000hrs Bravo Company at BS860301 engaged 6-7 VC evading, results 1 VC KIA dressed in black, had no ID, age 21-22, will leave body and watch to see if they come back to get it to bury.
Charlie Company

Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Thunder. At 1910hrs Charlie Company is at LZ Thunder with ambushes at BS848264, BS791341 and 31 on Bridge 111.
Delta Company

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Charlie Brown, and at 1910hrs Delta Company with 23 at LP BS931221, ambushes at BS898184, BS900175, BS900164, BS931221, BS903158, and BS909150 with 21 on bridge 94.
Echo Company
August 17, 1968
Echo Company is located at LZ Thunder where Battalion Forward is and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and Base Defense elements on LZ Thunder. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Thunder where they continue to provide direct fire support for the (1-20 Infantry Battalion). At 0946hrs the Recon Platoon 3-1 Infantry at BS437634 had observer several bands of 10-12 men carrying small and automatic weapons and have secured LZ Patch at BS437634. Received small arms fire while security hill and have 1 element chasing VC at this time. Also report that Recon 1-20 Infantry is in heavy contact no other details. At 1200hrs the 1-20 Infantry Recon Platoon reports their location at BS441653 and reports that they had engaged 8-10 VC evading, with negative results. At 1705hrs Recon Platoon reports their Night Location at BS442644 and at 1600hrs at BS444644 found 2 NVA pistol belts with canteens and the control face of a PRC 10 radio SN# 1822. On August 18 Recon Platoon will move slightly south and conduct a search of the area.
