Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 16, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0627hrs TMF String 76 was activated with no metal detected and negative clearance due to an RD Zone. At 1010hrs the Division Surgeon visited the LZ Liz Aid Station. At 1340hrs Helix 34 Heavy usage of trails were seen around OD Lake running into the tree area around BS7734 and a trail was spotted south of LIZ from BS755401 to BS761407 with 40 to 50 fighting positions on both sides. At 1915hrs 1-20 Infantry requests Area of Operations on B-106 from BS680540 to BS694531 along the road to BS733543 and the Date/Time/Gird extended to 242400hrs August 1970.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
August 16, 1970

Alpha Company is at 11th Light Infantry Brigade at LZ Bronco retraining and (Stand Down).

 

Bravo Company
August 16, 1970

Bravo Company the 34 element blocking forces at BS742660, the 36 element is closing on BS733652, the 76 element is moving to BS725609, the 70, 32, 35, and 37 elements are moving to BS738667 and the 57 element is moving to their Day Logger at BS704626. At 1920hrs Bravo Company will have 2 US were going on a short patrol to BS723634 with some PF.

 

Charlie Company
August 16, 1970

Charlie Company has the Security Mission for LZ Liz. At 0900hrs Charlie Company reports we picked up 6 detainee just outside the wire at LZ Liz four females 15- 35 and 2 small males 8 years old and evac to Military Intelligence.

 

Delta Company
August 16, 1970

At 0715hrs Delta Company 31element has mechanical ambush went of approximately at 0345hrs last night, the element checked out area and found that a cat set off the Mechanical Ambush. At 0800hrs the main units are at their Day logger. At 1740hrs all elements are moving to snake location. At 1830hrs Delta Company Urgent Dust Off the 61 element has two US with frag wounds one to the right arm. His name is SP4 John Ewing line # is 48E and one with wounds one of the leg and abdomen man’s name is SP4 Martin Lamb line #64L these wounds were caused by a booby trapped hand frag with pressure release type firing device, Dust Off completed at 1838hrs. At 1904hrs Delta Company Urgent Dust Off for the 62 element for 2 US with multiple frag wounds of the body and 2 US KIA resulting from a booby trapped frag grenade unknown type firing device ETA 10-15 min Dust Off complete 1915hrs. SSGT GERALD THOMAS BUTLER, SP4 RICHARD HENRY WARD IS LISTED AS KHA. Delta Company reports that 2LT Grant E. Dorothy, SP4 Carmine C. Tosue, SP4 Marlin L. Lamb and SP4 John Ewing where evac to 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Echo Company
August 16, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0430hrs 4.2 Mortar Platoon reports Fire Mission 0 with no ammo expended. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 1015hrs Recon Platoon we are moving to BS781467. At 1130hrs Recon Platoon at BS784465 we found a new hootch with a small can of water, men’s clothing, a stove with food and warm rice. We destroyed all of it. It is suspected that VC occupied the hootch and also found some old fighting positions and we think the VC used these for sleeping areas. A package of a couple bottles of Coke, beer and milk was found later along with some cigarettes and articles of clothing. In another hootch we found more clothing, rice, an old US watch, a cigarette lighter and some Vietnamese clothing. At 1220hrs Recon Platoon we request an Urgent Dust Off for 1 US who hit a booby trap. He has frag from the knees down. Name SSGT Deacon Platoon leader Dust Off completed at 1222hrs. The device was a pressure type with an unknown amount of explosives. At 1445hrs Recon Platoon at BS774468 we found a minefield on the north side of a trail and marked by 1 metal sign on a tree. All the booby traps in the area are pressure, blast type, with no shrapnel and all impossible to detect. At BS781471 a 3’ X 3’ X 3’ hole in the center of a trail junction with 2 booby traps to the north 5 and 15 meters and 1 large bunker was also found here (15’ X 4’ X 4’). At BS782468 in a bunker we found 1 Birth Certificate for a male, name Nguyen Can and a small scrap of paper with writing. There was also food for 5 to 3 people, 3 blue shirts, and 15’ of steel wire. Cooking fires found were still warm in four hootches. All bunkers found were destroyed and the documents evac to Military Intelligence. 1 man stepped on a booby trap, which did not detonate and a WIA as a result of a booby trap detonated. SSGT Douglas A. Deacon was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital (11B40) treated for Traumatic amp both legs, left above knee, right leg at the knee with multiple frag wounds to lower extremities, groin and multiple frag wounds to chest.
