Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 16, 1968
Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Thunder and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0755hrs Command and Control Helicopter at BS844328 two Vietnamese females were brought to bridge 107 by a Vietnamese civilian and 1 was hit in the leg and 1 was hit in head by artillery west of the RR they where Dust Off by Command and Control Helicopter. At 0945hrs Delta Company 19th Engineer at BS918254, while proceeding north behind the mine sweep received automatic weapons fire and M-79 rounds from East and Western side of the road, returned fire with negative results. At 1310hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC Delta Company request 4 dogs and 4 handlers to work with them, will pick up at 1600hrs.
Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.
Alpha Company
August 16, 1968
At 0831hrs Alpha Company is located at BS871349. At 0859hrs Alpha Company 10 is at BS874345 observed 3 VC in a ditch, one threw grenade at Alpha engaged 1 VC KIA, 1 VC WIA CIA and one evaded to the east. Alpha Gave chase found and engaged in a spider hole results 1 VC KIA, 1 grenade CIA, 2 bags of documents and 1 NVA uniform CIA, will evac to LZ Bronco. At 1000hrs at 874345 found additional Chi Com grenade in tunnel also found 1 (M-14) rifle with out sock #3448788 with a magazine of ammo. Alpha Company at 1154hrs moving to BS864343 found 5 81mm mortar rounds and 2 60mm mortar rounds in hedgerow destroyed. At 1313hrs Alpha Company at BS864343 found 2 tunnels (small) were well concealed with a lot of vegetation around the entrance. Found nothing inside, was destroyed. At 1410hrs Alpha Company at BS858355 and continue their Search and Destroy Operation. At 1520hrs Alpha Company at BS840356, found 1 VC hiding in a tunnel he had a Chi Com grenade, one ammo pouch with 10 rounds 7.62 and 3 rounds of 5.56 detained and IPW in interrogating. When we blew the grenade in place and it started a fire in hooch, which was above the tunnel. Had a secondary explosion, which was a WP grenade. At 1900hrs Alpha Company is in their Night Defense Position at BS850358 with ambushes at BS840363, BS857356 and BS844349.
Bravo Company
August 16, 1968
At 0831hrs Bravo Company location has no change. At 0859hrs Bravo Company at BS874345 observed 2 VC evading, coming out of wood line. Fired warning shots, VC would not halt, results 1 VC WIA, CIA and 1 VC evaded Dust Off by Command and Control helicopter. At 1900hrs Bravo Company is in their Night Defense Position at BS818298, BS811308, BS820301 and BS828309. At 1913hrs Bravo Company at BS832302, 2nd Platoon was moving to ambush site received approximately 6 rounds of automatic weapons fire, came from the east, negative casualties, called in artillery and have negative assessment. At 2330hrs Bravo Company at BS832303, spotted a hut with a light, went to check out and 2 VC evaded, engaged with results 2 VC KIA wearing back PJ, 18-19.
Charlie Company
August 16, 1968
Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Thunder. At 1130hrs Charlie Company at BS884327, detained one male about 39 years old, had bad ID. At 1900hrs Charlie Company (-) is at LZ Thunder with ambushes at BS839240 and BS795344 with the 31 on Bridge 111. At 2053hrs Charlie Company 11 is at BS840254 and 13 at BS791341.
Delta Company
August 16, 1968
Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Charlie Brown and at 0920hrs Delta Company at BS921211 Vietnamese was brought to Bridge 94 with frag wounds on face, he was working in field and hit a dud M-79 round, called Dust Off was evac at 0926hrs. At 1310hrs Delta Company request 4 dogs and 4 handlers to work with them, will pick up at 1600hrs. At 1900hrs Delta Company reports locations Charlie (-) LZ Charlie Brown, LP at BS932222, and ambushes at BS866235, BS851252, BS877267, BS903247, BS887203, and 12 on Bridge 94. At 2053hrs Delta Company 31 is now located at BS891202.
Echo Company
August 16, 1968
Echo Company is located at LZ Thunder where Battalion Forward is and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and Base Defense elements on LZ Thunder. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Thunder where they continue to provide direct fire support for the (1-20 Infantry Battalion). At 1035hrs Recon Platoon 1-20 Infantry reports their location at BS431654 and Recon Platoon 3-1 Infantry at BS428642. At 1500hrs Recon Platoon at BS434651 engaged 1 VC with results 1 VC KIA, no weapon, was carrying personnel papers, now checking area for weapon. At 1540hrs Recon Platoon reports their location at BS435647 and at 1852hrs Recon Platoon reports their night location at BS441652.
