Headquarters and Headquarter Company
April 16, 1969

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0140hrs Charlie Company BS920234 received small arms fire and hand grenade from 25 to 40 VC/NVA near main bunker on bridge on fire by 1 satchel charge 50% damaged, 53 element leader WIA and 5 other US WIA tracks evac wounded. At 0200hrs Delta Company 39 Engineer at LZ Goldie BS680658 received 8 to 10 rounds of mortar fire, updated at 0300hrs to a total of 14 rounds 82mm Mortar fire. At 0215hrs Bravo Company reports Engineer at LZ Thunder received 60 rounds automatic weapons fire from BS871314 also 2 mortar, rounds from BS840330 with negative casualties. At 0345hrs 174 Aviation at BS9123 Helicopter received automatic weapons fire and took I hit at altitude 200’ completed Mission and returned to base for repairs. At 1125hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC passed to SGT Kendall that 2 APC would be placed in defense of Bridges 392 and 393 starting the night of 16 April 69, but that tracks would not be placed on Bridge site 402U.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
April 16, 1969

At 1820hrs Alpha Company at BS772510 and at 1900hrs Alpha Company found 6 booby traps 5 Hand grenades, and 1 60mm rounds, and 2 Punji pits (5" X 3’), and 70 bunkers which were destroyed. Alpha Company spotted 15 to 30 VC moving northwest and only 1 VC was moving back southeast and unable to get a good shot.

 

Bravo Company
April 16, 1969

Bravo Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Thunder. At 0215hrs engineers at LZ Thunder received 60 rounds of Automatic weapons fire from BS871314 also received 2 rounds mortar fire from BS840330 negative casualties. At 0407hrs the 21 element is leaving LZ Thunder for a Cordon and Search operation to begin at first light at 0615hrs at BS881327. At 0925hrs Bravo Company at BS872347, evacuated 2 detainees to Thunder for questioning male negative weapon or ID. Bravo Company At 1845hrs 52 element moving ambush location received small arms fire and automatic weapons at BS876319 with results, 1 US WIA (E), and 2 US KIA. PFC WAYNE EUGENE BYRNE AND SGT LARRY A. SMITH LISTED AS KHA evac at 1905hrs and SP4 William Davis shot in back was Dust Off at 1900hrs. At 2000hrs Alpha Company with UPDATE report on Day at BS772510 during day discovered 6 booby traps, 1 60mm Mortar rounds, 5 Hand grenades, 2 Punji Pits, 3 Punji Pits 2’ deep and destroyed 70 bunkers, PRU took personnel items from Village at 1630hrs observed 16-30 VC 1 with Pack moving southeast called 81mm Mortar Mission negative results.

 

Charlie Company
April 16, 1969

At 0140 Charlie Company at BS920234 received small arms fire and hand grenades from 25 to 50 VC/NVA the main bunker on bridge is on fire by satchel Charge 50% damaged 52 element leader WHA and 5 other US WHA and at 0225hrs elements from Charlie Company with E Troop 1 Cav reinforced with results evac WHA to secure portion of Hardstand, no damage to Bridge itself. 3 VC KIA, A Ak47 CIA and 5 US Evac Dust Off completed at 0255hrs. At 0934hrs Charlie Company change CIA AK47 to 1 VZ 58P assault weapon (SN #68151). At 1208hrs Charlie Company found 200 to 300 pounds of salt and destroyed in hootch. At 1315hrs Charlie Company at BS923226, have 4 VCS at Bridge caught in Ville where attack came from last night all females 45, 18, 12, 7 none had ID. At 1820hrs Charlie Company are in the following Locations 31 at Bridge 93 and 32 at Bridge 92. SFC James Polk, SP4 Hayward M. Sampson, SP4 Gary A Ellis, PFC David M. Hoile, SP4 Irvin Smith were evac to the 312th Evac Hospital and SP4 Dudley B. Gjersvig, SP4 Dennis D. Roehrs were attached to the 27th Surgical Hospital.

 

Delta Company
April 16, 1969

Delta Company continued their Security mission for LZ Liz. At 1945hrs Delta Company on LZ Liz spot 1 VC fired M-60 and 2 laws evaded lost sight. At 0130hrs Duc Pho received 15 to 25 satchel charges appeared to come from south and southwest 16 WIA 11 civilians and 2 PF. Brigade scrambled gun and flare ships negative ground contact. At 1820hrs Delta Company reports their locations 23 at Bridge 124, 24 at BS752436, 25 at BS754420, 51 at BS733433, 52 at BS735433, 53 at BS741430 and 54 at BS745431. At 1930hrs Delta Company spotted 8 VC/NVA at BS734397 could be a possible carrying party.

 

Echo Company
April 16, 1969

Echo Company headquarters is located at LZ Liz. The 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Charlie Brown, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the LZ Charlie Brown. Echo Company Headquarters has the responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz.
