Headquarters and Headquarter Company
September 15, 1968

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Thunder and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. 1-20 Infantry Jump Command Post Equipment and support personnel to set it up is moved to Special Force’s Camp at Ha Thanh with Delta Company 1-20 Infantry. At 0025hrs E Troop 1-1 Calvary on bridge 112 received small arms fire and M-79 rounds from the direction of Duc Pho. At 0715hrs Bravo Company 19 Engineer at BS755454 found roadblock made of dirt 2’ high 20’ long with barbwire fence on top of it, was removed. At 0725hrs Bravo Company 19 Engineer at BS771459 both sides of culvert were blown, estimate charge 40 pounds, crater 12’ diameter to the bottom if tubes filled hold. Culvert will be repaired tomorrow, road will be open during repairs. At 1130hrs Military Police is proceeding to objective at this time at BS772402. At 1345hrs Military Police at BS771402 found a large tunnel complex in hedgerow inside found estimated 10-25 tons of rice informer says there is much more in a Headquarters complex. At 1533hrs Charlie Company 4-3 Infantry has completed their air move to LZ Thunder. At 1600hrs Coordinated with MACV to secure area, RF platoon will be taken to area by 4 APC, ASAP to relieve to Military Police and Nation Police. At 1430hrs Delta Company 19 Engineer at BS835335 tabs 31 while pulling water pad moving south hit mine blew off left wheel of water pod, negative casualties, preceded to Command Post. At 1615hrs Military Police a vehicle moving to Duc Pho received small arms fire, result 1 US WHA (M), Military Police took him to A&D 6 Support from bridge 112. At 1910hrs Delta Company 19th Engineer received approximately 7-10 rounds of small arms fire while operating water pumps at BS811368, 1 US WHAT (E) Dust Off completed at 1700hrs. At 2030hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC swift boat the 23 element at BS8540 has contact in same area, received small arms fire at mouth of river and requests illumination from Montazuma.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. At 1620hrs At 1620hrs 360 Transport at BS888270 reports 1 Truck hit by B-40 rocket round (2) and small arms fire with 1 WHA (M) truck total loss.

 

Alpha Company
September 15, 1968

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz as they prepare to join the Battalion in start of Operation CHAMPAIGN GROVE tomorrow.

 

Bravo Company
September 15, 1968

Bravo continues their Security Mission for LZ Dragon and prepared for airlift in morning to join Operation CHAMPAIGN GROVE.

 

Charlie Company
September 15, 1968

Charlie Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Thunder and LZ Charlie Brown, they are preparing for their role in Operation CHAMPAIGN GROVE.

 

Delta Company
September 15, 1968

At 1300hrs Delta Company after Airlifted and closed on HA THANH Special Forces Camp and OPCON to CHAMPAING GROVE. At 1420hrs 1-20 Infantry at HA THANH received 4 rounds of 120mm mortar from West with negative casualties and at 1850hrs received 5 Mortar rounds at 2015hrs UP DATE 82 Mortar should read 82/120mm Mortars landed inside camp with 4 US WHA (E), 3 CIDG WHA, 1 MSF WHA, 1 CIDG KHA and Supply room took 2 rounds and fire was put old (Just the old Welcome Wagon). Delta Company report fire came from BS367683 are firing Artillery and making sweep of the area.

 

Echo Company
September 15, 1968

Echo Company is located at LZ Thunder where Battalion Forward is and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and Base Defense elements on LZ Thunder. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Thunder where they continue to provide direct fire support for the (1-20 Infantry) Battalion. At 1830hrs Recon Platoon reports their location at BS403717 has moved with Delta Company and Jump Command Post and then left to new position at BS403717.
