Headquarters and Headquarter Company
October 15, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0530hrs Brigade there will be a class on Beacon box system at LZ Debbie on 171000hrs to 171500hrs, conducted by Marine pilots. All units required to send at least 3 personnel, to attend. At 1230hrs Brigade Typhoon warning effective now, storm condition #3 expect 50 knot winds. Within 48 hours Typhoon Joan will be located, 480 knots east to southeast from Da Nang. Expect weather condition #2 in the next 24 hours, at 17 October, Winds 50 knots, if nothing changes in the meantime. At 1245hrs Brigade Division in storm condition #3, high winds and rain. (Important Move all troops to high ground and out of danger of flooding. Move resupply to field units ASAP. At 1300hrs 1-20 infantry S-3 Charlie Company move now to BS680569 high ground, Delta Company 1-20 Infantry and Delta Company 4-21 Infantry move now to high grounds at BS678612, move now. At 1330hrs Brigade expects extremely high winds by 1800hrs, tie everything down and from Commanding General, prepared all command by 1800hrs for high winds. At 1400hrs Warning there possible (90 miles per – hour) high winds. At 1040hrs TMF String 196 B stationary Target, negative metal confirmed, engaged with 26 rounds 105 Artillery. At 1920hrs Brigade CPT Mullens reports at LZ Snoopy reported 2 US turned then in at LZ Snoopy and requested confirmation S-3 called LZ Snoopy talked to relay station and LT Zierden, confirmed the following information. PVT John Smith Alpha Company LZ Liz, was absent from KP duty at LZ Liz mess hall 15 October 1970, he was found at the LZ Snoopy Mess Hall 15 October 1970 at 1800hrs along with another US soldier. LT Zierden questioned both of them, confirmed PVT Smith as being a member of Alpha Company 1-20 Infantry but could not identify the other individual since he did not have ID card, dog tags or any other papers. Unidentified individual is being detained at LZ Snoopy, Smith will be returned to LZ Liz tomorrow. Legend 1st Platoon 03-08, 2nd Platoon 53-58, 3rd Platoon 83-88, 4th Platoon 63-68 and CO 43.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
October 15, 1970

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz. Also are at LZ Liz for refitting and retraining. At 1023hrs Alpha Company on move to pre plan Operation the 43, 03 elements to BS753550, the 53 element to BS768555 and the 83 element to BS768547. At 1630hrs Alpha Company 87 is at BS770545, while moving to their Patrol Base engaged 1 enemy dressed in green, at a distance of 50 meters, small arms fire exchanged. The 87 element assaulted the contact area with the following results: 2 M-16 CIA 1 AK47, 1SKS, 1 M-1 carbine, 4 pistol belts, 7 M-26 grenades, 5 flashlights. At 1939hrs Alpha Company 55 is in ambush location BS768544, the 86 element ambush is at BS768552 and the 53 and 83 elements ambush BS770544. At 2030hrs Alpha Company the 05 element at BS746550, 56 Rat Patrol at BS766557 and the 85 element at BS762548.

 

Bravo Company
October 15, 1970

At 1005hrs Bravo Company the 05 element moving out for BS742566 and 54 to Checkpoint 2 at BS740574. At 1400hrs Request routine Dust Off for 1 US shot himself in foot at BS740569 L# 0942hrs Thomas Leverance completed 1430hrs. At 1230hrs Bravo Company at BS738567 they found 1,000 pounds of rice. In the same general vicinity they found another ton of rice. The rice was this year crop, unpolished. It was bound in baskets, mud bins and 100 pound sacks. They have also found 500 pounds at BS746575 also same location 1 female detainee, dressed in blue and black, no ID, 25, will back haul to Military Intelligence. SGT Tomas Leverence was evac to the 91st Evac Hospital.

 

Charlie Company
October 15, 1970

At 1051hrs Charlie Company 05 element found at BS683583 1 NVA helmet with 5 incoming and outgoing holes, 4 holes and pair of pants with blood on the outside, seems to be from two to three days old Written inside helmet "DZU". At 1300hrs Charlie Company has moved now to BS680569 high ground and at BS695614 found a 105mm Booby trap with fishing line across a trail, looked fairly old and blew it in place. At 1600hrs 1st Platoon Charlie Company 1-20 Infantry Late Report: Interrogation of wounded Platoon leader with enemy element believed to be 7th Company, 70th Battalion 21 NVA Regiment, confirms 7 NVA killed and at least 4 others wounded. Interrogation of the CIA Platoon Leader also revealed the enemy had employed a .30 cal machinegun during the contact, and one Charlie Company personnel was wounded by a .30 cal slug and RPG gunner out in half by a M-79 round and second RPG gunner fired at US reinforcements, but was in turn hit twice and fell, the enemy were killed in the northeast clearing of the wood line vicinity of BS676573. At 1800hrs Charlie Company moving out for LZ Snoopy and closed on LZ Snoopy at 1845hrs.

 

Delta Company
October 15, 1970

At 0653hrs Delta Company present location is at BS678594. At 1300hrs 1-20 Infantry Delta Company and Delta Company 4-21 Infantry move now to high ground BS678612. At 1800hrs Delta Company moving out for LZ Snoopy also Delta Company 4-21 Infantry moving out to LZ Snoopy and closed on LZ Snoopy at 1845hrs.

 

Echo Company
October 15, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. Recon Platoon continued their Security Mission for 1-20 Infantry. SP4 Jerome Woolridge was attached to the 91st Evac Hospital (76Y30) sick.
