Headquarters and Headquarter Company
August 15, 1968

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Thunder and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 1045hrs Bravo Company 19 Engineers at BS756493 mine sweep team sweeping north found a mine with bamboo plunger firing device. Charge estimated at 20 pounds. Mine was placed directly over culvert, burned out mine with C-4. At 1455hrs 1-20 Infantry request a PSYOP’s team fly over area north of LZ Thunder and try to get NVA soldiers to give up Chopper with loudspeaker team from S-5 at 1515hrs. At 1634hrs 1-20 Infantry TOC A 2 ½ ton truck received automatic weapons fire and track on bridge 88 went to assist truck, truck return heavy fire with negative assessment. Bridge 88 received heavy sniper fire and track returned and put out heavy fire to west of bridge. A ¼ ton jeep received automatic weapons fire, again the track went to assist, they returned fire to the west with negative assessment there were negative casualties in the activity. At 2125hrs MACV Duc Pho reports on Bridge 115 PF received small arms fire from about 1000 meters to the southwest with negative casualties. At 2205hrs PF ambush at BS801384 was probed by 1squad of VC which threw 1 hand grenade, negative casualties, returned fire with negative assessment.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
August 15, 1968

Alpha Company conducted a move from BA TO Area of Operation to BS845352 and Duc Pho Area of Operation at BS845352 last LZ finished at 1028hrs. At 1108hrs Alpha Company at BS861359 detained 5 VCS, all male who had ID cards giving their ages at 14 and at 1108hrs at BS861359 detained 8 VCS all males will interrogate in field. At 1140hrs at BS861359 found one 8 band Panasonic radio in hut evac. At 1250hrs Alpha Company at BS865357 found a hedgerow, uncovered it and found 2 NVA who started throwing grenades, engaged with small arms fire 2 NVA KIA, 2 AK-47 CIA #11049516 and 11084579. All 3 NVA evaded toward the blocking element all 3 wearing green uniforms and approximate 25. At 1310hrs Alpha Company at BS865357 in same area where 2 NVA were killed found an RPG, light machinegun #8219548. At 1342hrs Alpha Company at BS865357 found 3 Chi Com grenades, 2 bags with clothing material, OD Type and 1 military pack. At 1455hrs 1-20 Infantry requested a PSYOP’s team fly over north of LZ Thunder and try to get NVA soldiers to give up. At 1940hrs Alpha Company is in their Night Defense Position at BS869351.

 

Bravo Company
August 15, 1968

Bravo Company conducts Air Move from BA TO, to LZ Thunder 1st Lift 1431hrs and 1st lift will come out by slick and last lift out by hooks and was completed by 1827hrs. At 1940hrs Bravo Company 10 is at BS866362, 20 at BS862362, with 30 at BS855357 and ambush 31 at BS855353.

 

Charlie Company
August 15, 1968

Charlie Company continued with their Security Mission for LZ Thunder. Charlie Company at 1102hrs at BS875342 detained 5 VCS, all male, had ID giving age as 14. At 1940hrs Charlie Company location s 10 is at LZ Thunder, Command Post and 20 at BS870340 and the 30 element is at BS804337.

 

Delta Company
August 15, 1968

Delta Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Charlie Brown and at 0643hrs Delta Company at BS885265, spotted 1 individual moving from west to east, fired warning shot and individual evaded, engaged results 1 VC KIA. At 1940hrs Delta Company Command Post and 10 at Charlie Brown, with ambushes 20 at BS863260 and 23 ambush at BS866250, 25 at BS857257, 30 at BS891260, 35 at BS893251, 31 at BS892219, E Troop and 15 at BS862337 and 10 Night Defense Position at BS858341.

 

Echo Company
August 15, 1968

Echo Company is located at LZ Thunder where Battalion Forward is and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and Base Defense elements on LZ Thunder. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Thunder where they continue to provide direct fire support for (the 1-20 Infantry Battalion). At 0947hrs Both Recon Platoon are crossing the river at this time, Recon 3-1 Infantry and Recon 1-20 Infantry. At 1155hrs Recon Platoon 1-20 Infantry reports their location at BS406682 and Recon 3-1 is at BS395657. At 1753hrs Recon Platoon 1-20 Infantry reports their locations Command Post at BS424675, 1st ambush at BS423674 and 2nd ambush at BS426673.
