Headquarters and Headquarter Company

Forward Area 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Ross for Operation WHEELER-WALLOWA and are OPCON to the 198th Light Infantry Brigade At 1000hrs 198th Light Infantry Brigade turn over their Control to 196th Light Infantry Brigade Control of the WHEELER-WALLOWA Area of Operation.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
May 14, 1968

The Battle at Nui Hoac Ridge final stages begin with Alpha and Delta Companies along with Recon Platoon 1-6 Infantry and Alpha and Bravo Companies 1-20 Infantry Mission was to take the Nui Hoac Ridge, BT056226 to BT065226. At 1529hrs Alpha Company received Mortar fire from BR BT052225 Artillery called firing stopped. At 1605hrs Alpha Company received Mortar fire from BT05225 with negative casualties and at 1607 received 50 caliber fire called in artillery and air strikes the Gun Ships silenced RPG firing. At 1645hrs Alpha Company reports 1 WIA. Both Bravo and Alpha Companies 1-20 Infantry on the right flank of the attacking forces moving southward up along the ridge was receiving enemy mortar fire from BT050225. At 1930hrs Alpha and Delta 1-6 Infantry and Alpha and Bravo Companies received 9 82mm Mortar rounds and called artillery. Alpha Company reports the following PFC John A. Larrabee and PFC BOBBY MOORER where evac (see May 15, 1968).

 

Bravo Company
May 14, 1968

The Battle at Nui Hoac Ridge begin with Alpha and Delta Companies along with Recon Platoon 1-6 Infantry and Alpha and Bravo Companies 1-20 Infantry Mission was to take the Nui Hoac Ridge, BT056226 to BT065226. Both Bravo and Alpha Companies on the right flank of the attacking forces moving southward up along the ridge was receiving enemy mortar fire from BT050225 At 1550hrs Bravo Company reports 4 WHA from mortar fire. At 1625hrs Bravo Company 1-20 Infantry Dust Off and evac 7 WIA from Bravo Company. At 1645hrs Bravo Company received 2 more WIA. At 1647hrs is receiving 60mm Mortar Rounds. At 1930hrs Alpha and Delta 1-6 Infantry and Alpha and Bravo Companies received 9 82mm Mortar rounds and called artillery. Bravo Company reports PFC Earl R. Lowe was attached to NSA DA Nang. SGT WAYNE S. PIROCTOR (see June 4, 1968), SP4 Melvin L Handy, SP4 Jessie Green JR, PFC Jerry A. Kidder, PFC Donald Washington, PFC Joe Lambert JR and PFC James Parks where attach to 95th Evac Hospital. SSGT ABRAHAM K. AHUNA was evac to 95th Evac Hospital (See May 17, 1968).

 

Charlie Company
May 14, 1968

The 196th Infantry Brigade has returned to take over Control of the Operation WHEELER-WALLOWA Area of Operation. Charlie Company continued to use Search and Clear operations in their Area of Operation.

 

Delta Company
May 14, 1968

Delta Company has the Security mission for LZ Ross SGT Francis W. Entrup was attached to the 2nd Surgical Hospital. SGT Gary D. Robertson and PFC Guadelupe Garcia where attached to the 95th Evac Hospital.

 

Echo Company
May 14, 1968

Echo Company is located at LZ Ross where Battalion Forward, is located and coordinates with the Battalion Rear Elements and the Base Defense on LZ Ross. The 4.2 Platoon is located on LZ Ross where they continue to provide direct fire support for the Battalion. 1-20 Infantry Recon Platoon manned OP Tiger, Cobra and Dragon.
