Headquarters and Headquarter Company
July 14, 1970

Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. Charlie Company remains OPCON to the 4-3 Infantry. At 1925hrs 1-20 Infantry some little people on LZ Max OP spotted 2 VC with weapons. Primo on station and checked the area along with PF and RF forces with negative findings. LEGEND: 1st Platoon 14-19, 2nd Platoon 54-59, 3rd Platoon 34-39, Co- 21.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco.

 

Alpha Company
July 14, 1970

Alpha Company continued their Security Mission for LZ Liz and security for the Access Road.

 

Bravo Company
July 14, 1970

Bravo Company continued their joint Operations with PF and RF units on their Hamlet Pacification and security of Highway 1. At 0605hrs Bravo Company Commander is moving out with the 56 element and the 36 element is at BS743650. At 0640hrs Bravo Company the 38 element is taking sniper fire from the east, fired 8 to 10 rounds of Artillery into BS744640. The 36 element with the 20 element is moving northwest to flank the sniper when they received sniper fire from the same area as the 38 element. They also received some 81mm and 20 to 60 rounds of M-16 semi-automatic fire from 400 meters to the southeast, then 30 rounds from 300 meters to the southeast. The 34 and 39 spotted 4-6, enemy with packs, about 50 to 75 meters to the north. They chased them in a thick wooded area with no results. At 0743hrs Bravo Company an Urgent Dust Off was called for at 745646 for 1 PF with the 36 and 26 element that tripped a bouncing Betty booby trap resulting in 1 PF WIA with multiple frag wounds and 1 PF KIA completed at 0807hrs. At 0800hrs Bravo Company the 56 and 28 elements have closed on their Day Logger. Bravo Company 34 element found a campsite at BS748633, which contained 10 fish and several sleeping positions, several changes of clothing, 20 meters west, 1 M-16 antipersonnel mine set to explode with 1 60mm round beside it and blew in place. Finding mines in the area and destroying them. At 0835hrs Bravo Company the 36 and 20 elements are finding many mines in the area of BS744643 read out shortly 1 M-26 hand frag with trip wire been in location for a long time. At 0955hrs Bravo Company at BS745640 the 36 and 20 elements had a booby trap M-67 hand frag go off, 1 PF slight frag wound no Dust Off need. Booby trap was trip wire device in bushes. At 1213hrs Bravo Company the 20 element picked up 1 detainee (male) 30 he had an ID but it looked bad. He was dressed in blue shorts with a white shirt, he was evac to MACV Mo Duc. At 1215hrs Bravo Company PF and the 36 element and some PF were in a stay behind ambush. The PF sprung the ambush when the enemy was 20 meters away. They engaged 1-5, enemy coming from the southwest, the 236 element was unable to fire because of the poor angle. Helix 34 had negative sightings. They fired an 81mm but the enemy evaded to the southwest. The 36 element had negative findings. Vietnamese say they saw 1 AK-47, negative description of clothing with negative casualties or results. At 1505hrs Bravo Company at 679601 the 27 element received rounds from 200 meter from them. They came in at 4600 mills. There was negative artillery firing at this time, they took 2 rounds HE VT air burst frag. The rounds came from the other side of the river, 105mm Artillery. At 1600hrs Bravo Company the 27 element changed their Mechanical Ambush to BS681608. At 2100hrs Bravo Company the 36 and 38 elements are in location The 56 element is in location 300 meters west of preplanned location.

 

Charlie Company
July 14, 1970

Charlie Company was OPCON to the 4-3 Infantry and Charlie Company continues their Search and Clear Operation of vicinity for Cache’s. Charlie Company 1st Platoon at BS 616557 found 1 hut 10’X15’ and 10 fighting position, 45 pistol belt with ammo pouch and appears that people left these morning. Charlie Company at BS617556 found 1steel trap, was old and rusty destroyed but will send to San Juan Hill. Charlie Company continues their Search and Clear Operation, looking for Cache’s.

 

Delta Company
July 14, 1970

Delta Company continued their using Day ambush and saturation patrolling in their Area of Operation. At 0642hrs Delta Company the 54, 21, 24 elements are in their Day Logger at BS751568. The 35 element is moving out at BS773538. The 26 element is moving out on patrol at BS766536. All of the mechanical ambushes are in place. At 0830hrs Delta Company the 54 element is in their Day Logger at BS760547 and the Chieu Hoi is ready to be extracted. At 1915hrs Delta Company the 56 element has closed on their Night Defense Position and all mechanical ambushes are in position and by 2030hrs all snakes are in their locations. At 245hrs Delta Company rat patrol of the 26 element is moving out and at 2330hrs the rat patrol of the 26 element has closed on the Night Defense Position with negative findings.

 

Echo Company
July 14, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0500hrs 4.2 Platoon reports Fire Mission 3 for a total expended of 39 HE rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 0627hrs Recon Platoon all elements are moving to Day Logger while they were moving they found 1 east AK-47 lying on a dike at grid BSBS776379. While checking the area of their ambush they also found 1 each M-2 carbine. Plus the following items 2 US pistol belts, 2 VC pistol belts (1 with star), 3 M2 magazines all which were full of ammo also 3 VC ponchos and 4 US hand frag grenades. At 0915hrs Recon Platoon ahs closed on LZ Liz. At 1900hrs Recon all of the patrols are moving out.
