Forward Area: 1-20 Infantry Headquarters is located at LZ Liz and will continued to work with ARVN units in their Area of Operations. At 0837hrs Charlie Company we request a routine Dust Off for one US with damage to the ears caused by some type of air blast at grid BS703574 completed at 0905hrs. The person was an engineer. At 1050hrs Delta Company the Engineer and 32 elements are at BS702588 their Day Logger location. At 1450hrs Charlie Company closing on LZ Liz a 2 ½ ton Vehicle hit a mine on the LZ Liz access road causing a crater 5’ in diameter and blew the vehicle 50’ away. The vehicle was a total loss with the cab and engine and black wheels blown off. A total of 29 personnel were Dusted Off completed at 1503hrs gird BS771438. At 1600hrs Charlie Company 2 Vietnamese children were picked up evading south from the access road after the incident. Approximately age 12-13 and were evac to MI grid BS7714738. At 1515hrs TMF at 1455hrs String 73 was activated by stationary personnel with metal confirmed, Negative clearance was given Artillery due to an RD Zone. At 1715hrs 26 Engineer a total of 33 hours were worked clearing 40 acres in the area BS702572 to BS708572 to BS708568 destroying 7 bunkers and 150 meters of trench. They also reports destroyed a double 81mm booby trap, 1 155 round and Chi Com grenade. Equipment reports 7 D7 operational and 3 Deadline, 1 CEV, 1 AC and 1 M548 where operational. At 1820hrs 81mm ammo reports Alpha Company retraining, Bravo Company has 208 HE, 72 WP and 160 Illumination. Charlie Company has 229 HE, 121 WP and 247 Illumination rounds and Delta Company has 6 HE and 8 Illumination on hand. At 1930hrs 1-20 Infantry pages 3 of 11 in the SOI, Division was lost in the mine incident and also days 15-16 in KAC 811 and all suffix pages in the Division SOI were lost, Brigade S2 was informed.

Rear Area: Battalion Rear continued their Mission of general support for the battalion and continued their Security Mission for LZ Bronco. Headquarters and Headquarter Company reports SP4 Thomas T. Owens treated and released from 23 Medical with frag wounds to back and head and SSGT Charlie Whitlock 63C to Bravo Company frag wounds to chest.

 

Alpha Company

Alpha Company is at 11th Light Infantry Brigade at LZ Bronco retraining and (Stand Down).

 

Bravo Company
August 14, 1970

At 1850hrs Bravo Company the 34 element has closed on BS748666 PF 166 engaged 14 VC that were beating up and questioning civilians asking about US and ARVN units missions and movements and when they would leave the area. The PF engaged with fire but VC/NVA evaded to the northwest. CPT Parker rates as F1. At 2015hrs Bravo Company the 35 element is at BS742667, the 57 element is at BS705627, the 56 element at BS722617 and Bravo Company the 74 element at BS714586 and the 75 element at BS715601. PFC DUANE EVERETT WALDRON IS LISTED AS KHA DIED OF WOUNDS (SEE July 28, 1970).

 

Charlie Company
August 14, 1970

At 0731hrs Charlie Company the 52 element is on the western and the 32 element is on the eastern side of the slope at BS705567. The 52 element engaged an estimated six VC in a wood line while screening south of the river for land clearing. The results are 3 VC KIA, 3 AK 47 CIA and one US hand frag CIA. In checking the area further 4 AK47 magazines, 3 pistol belts, one new manufactory grenade (Chi Com). Also, there was a backpack with a green uniform, detonate cord and time fuse with blasting cap. One was dressed in all Grey and other two in all black and from the KIA we received documents. The PF found a (1’ X 1’) with metal fragments on top will blow it in place. 0800hrs Charlie Company 70 found booby trap buried in the center of trail at BS713565 and blew in place. The booby trap was compressed of US material, a 3-prong pressure release type-firing device and Bouncing Betty base and it was inside a 40 to 60mm shell. At 0837hrs Charlie Company we request a routine Dust Off for one US with damage to the ears caused by some type of air blast at grid BS703574 completed at 0905hrs the personnel is an Engineer. At 1325hrs yesterday 6 detainees were taken to the Village Chief and were innocent civilians and released. Hammock Charlie Company treated and released form 91 EVC frag wound to head and (L) arm, Terry N. Dove Charlie Company to 91 Evac frag wounds face (L) hip and chest, PFC JB Newman Charlie Company to 91 Evac frag wound right shoulder, SP4 Ernie L. Delta Company
August 14, 1970

At 0610hrs Delta Company the 52 element has closed on the Day Logger at BS75458 with the 56 element has closed on BS754583 and at 0631hrs Delta 74 is moving to BS745569. At 0723hrs Delta Company 74 reports at BS764569 pick up a male detainee wearing all purple. He said he was 60 years old but looks younger, he was released. At 0907hrs Delta Company 70 request a Dust Off for one US personnel with an extremely swollen foot line # 728 completed at 0950hrs. At 1015hrs Delta Company the company is moving to BS724570. At 1050hrs Delta Company the Engineer and the 32 element are at BS702588 their Day Logger location. At 1100hrs 1-20 Infantry we request an Area of Operation extension in the Date/Time/Grid 141500hrs to 151200hrs from BS695540 to BS710540 to BS721527 along trail west of hill to BS728511 to BS744480 to BS730500 to BS700510 to BS695540. Purpose for is the Recon Platoon to move from BS710540 south to BS725490 during the hours of darkness tonight. Also 11 Brigade approved an Area of Operation extension B110, to be extension to 160500hrs. At 1955hrs Delta Company the 70, 42 and 72 Night Defense Position is at BS703539 and the 52 element is moving to BS702548.

 

Echo Company
August 14, 1970

Echo Company headquarters and 4.2 Mortar Platoon is location on LZ Liz, where the 4.2 Platoon providing direct fire support for the Battalion. At 0507hrs 4.2 Mortar Platoon reports Fire Mission 1 for a total expended of HE 4 rounds. Echo Company Headquarters has the coordination responsibility for Base Defense. At 2130hrs Recon Platoon reports 52 element ambush is at BS725490. Echo Company reports PVT David L. Snyder evac 1515hrs to 27 Surgical with frag wounds to (R) wrist.
